Most Disney villains prefer to work alone, and for good reason. Top notch evil sidekicks are far and few between. This one isn’t evil enough, that one isn’t smart enough; the reasons for flying solo are too numerous to count for some of our favorite baddies. There are, however, a few evil-doers that prefer the ignorant and complacent following of a cronie or two. Take a look at our top 10 evil sidekicks; the loyal ones, the dumb ones, and even an evil one or two!
- Horace and Jasper – 101 Dalmatians
- Horace and Jasper are Cruella DeVil’s not-so-evil henchmen. They are charged with the kidnapping and holding of Pongo and Perdita’s puppies. Cruella learns quickly, though, that evil cannot be bought. While Horace and Jasper do their best to get the job done (which we know isn’t saying much), they have no loyalty to Cruella and leave her service just as quickly as they entered it.
- Lefou – Beauty and the Beast
- One of the most loyal villain sidekicks, Lefou is Gaston’s right-hand man. He even sings a song of Gaston’s greatness. But when it comes down to it, Lefou is exactly what his name implies – the fool. Lefou encourages Gaston on his quest to slay the Beast, and well, we know how well that goes. (You can listen to our interview with the voice of Lefou, Jessi Corti in our archives at DizRadio.com)
- Flotsam and Jetsam – The Little Mermaid
- Ursula’s eel minions prove themselves to be pretty useful for not having limbs. They are exceptional spies, combine to create a crystal-ball like portal for Ursula, and are successful in all of their evil duties. They are just as dark and mysterious as their villain, and are fiercely loyal until Ursula accidentally kills them.
- Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed – The Lion King
- As sidekicks go, this trio is relatively well-rounded. Shenzi is the smartest of Scar’s minions, Banzai the meanest, and then there’s Ed. The hyenas are loyal to Scar for years and carry out his evil work happily. But when Scar himself disgraces them, they change sides. Lesson learned: either treat your lackeys better, or don’t outnumber your own evil self.
- Mr. Smee – Peter Pan
- Another fiercely loyal lackey, Mr. Smee is Captain Hook’s silly little assistant. He shaves Captain Hook’s beard (or a seagull’s bum, if you want to be technical), cooks his meals, and offers the Captain a few genuinely good ideas. Mr. Smee gives Hook the idea to kidnap Tiger Lilly and later the idea to kidnap Tinkerbell. Both solid ideas, just poorly executed. Mr. Smee follows Hook till the end, even chasing him and the crocodile across the sea.
- Anastasia and Drizella – Cinderella
- Cinderella’s step-mother didn’t need much help in concocting her evil plans, but she used her daughters in executing them. When Cinderella showed up with all of her chores finished and her own mouse-made dress, she let Anastasia and Drizella do her dirty work and rip the dress to shreds. Family make easy choices for evil lackeys, and these girls performed their evil duties quite well. - Pain and Panic – Hercules
- Hades has his hands full with Pain and Panic. While fiercely loyal, the duo is at a lack for wits. They are assigned one task and fail miserably, resulting in the creation of Hades’ mortal enemy, Hercules. The pair is exceptionally useful, however, with their ability to shapeshift. They trick Megara, Hercules, Pegasus…just about everyone. If only they were a bit more competent in everything else!
- Kronk – The Emperor’s New Groove
- Evil Henchmen don’t come any more loyal than Kronk, but there are surely more intelligent ones out there. Kronk carries out Ezma’s every whim, including carrying her through the jungle. He encourages Ezma to have a little more fun and not take for granted the simpler things in life, like spinach puffs. Plus, he comes with his own theme music.
- Sir Hiss – Robin Hood
- One of the smartest evil sidekicks on our list, Sir Hiss truly has Prince John’s best interests at heart. He sees right through Robin Hood and Little John’s disguises and advises his prince to stay away. He is a sneaky spy and loyal subject, but Prince John does what Prince John wants. If Sir Hiss had been calling the shots, Robin Hood may have been a much different story.
- Iago – Aladdin
- As evil sidekicks go, Iago has it all. He’s equally as evil as Jafar, he’s incredibly loyal, and he’s smart enough to contribute to menacing plans. He proves himself useful in providing a faux storm for Jafar, spying on the Sultan, and tricking Aladdin out of possession of Genie’s lamp. He even followed Jafar into imprisonment (though maybe not so willingly). Iago is certainly the baddest of the secondary baddies.
