Cloud 9, the latest Disney Channel Original Movie (DCOM), premiered last Friday, and it’s safe to say, a lot of tweens will be begging for a snowboard this winter. Newcomer, Dove Cameron of Liv and Maddie, sparkled in true Disney starlet form opposite Ravenswood’s Luke Benward in this charming DCOM installment.

The Plot:

Privileged Kayla Morgan’s eyes are opened after learning the harsh reality of her supposed snowboarding fame. It seems she’s not as talented as she thought, and everyone knew it except for her. A sequence of events leads her to assisting at former snowboarder, Will Cloud’s dog kennel where she learns her true potential.

Executive produced by Ashley Tisdale, this movie has plenty of heart and a moral compass. Focusing on substance over style, Kayla Morgan learns to better herself by giving back to others. Her friendship with Will Cloud proves valuable as she embodies the phrase, “Nothing’s impossible,” and finds the true meaning of loyalty. Cloud 9 is a testament to family entertainment, and it gives me hope for the immediate future of the DCOM series.

After a slow 2013 for DCOM’s, it appears that Cloud 9 will be the first of a few more to hit home televisions this year. Teen Beach Movie was the one and only release last year, and while it became the second highest rated DCOM premiere with 13.5 million viewers, it seemed to fall a bit flat in comparison to Disney Channel’s biggest hit, High School Musical. Teen Beach Movie’s retro, Beach Blanket Bingo feel is plenty of fun, but lacks the substance I found apparent in Cloud 9.

Cloud 9 is the first predominantly competition-based DCOM since 2007’s Johnny Kapahala: Back on Board. It emphasizes dedication to your skill and friends, and it’s a must-see for any Disney Channel fan. As an added bonus, Dove Cameron and Luke Benward share an incredibly catchy duet of the movie’s title, Cloud 9. If you need some inspiration to get through your day, press play and let it transport you to a happier place, until you’re able to watch the movie for yourself.

Catch the encore of Cloud 9 on the Disney Channel, Monday the 20th at 8:45/7:45C.
