Disney Publishing Worldwide Launches Inspirational New Multiplatform Property, ‘Star Darlings’

Disney Publishing Worldwide (DPW) today announced the release of Disney “Star Darlings,” an original new property that features twelve unique girls who encourage tweens to celebrate their individuality, make positive choices, and show that they can make any wish a reality. Disney “Star Darlings” launches today in North America with two novels available everywhere books and eBooks are sold. All-new “Star Darlings” content and products will be released through November, including an accompanying storytelling and lifestyle app, music from Walt Disney Records, the first shorts in an animated series on YouTube, and a fashion dolls line created in collaboration with JAKKS Pacific that will be available at Justice stores nationwide.

he “Star Darlings” characters embody the qualities and characteristics of today’s tweens, and have been created to resonate with the audience through a multiplatform lifestyle experience tailored just for them. Each Star Darling has her own wish that she pursues with determination and the help of her friends, and these shared journeys and experiences are designed to inspire tweens to go after their dreams.

The story begins on Starland where a major crisis is afoot, and twelve unique girls from the prestigious Starling Academy are chosen to be the first student Starlings to venture to Earth. Rich with themes of friendship, confidence, leadership, and teamwork, the Star Darlings go on the most magical adventures of their lives. Determined to succeed, the girls show courage and ingenuity—plus a whole lot of humor—as they guide others on Earth to discover happiness and fulfillment.

A small assortment will also be available at select Disney Store locations and DisneyStore.com.

To celebrate the release of the first books in the “Star Darlings” series, Shana Muldoon Zappa and Ahmet Zappa will be signing copies of “Star Darlings” at Children’s Book World in Los Angeles on Saturday, September 19, 2015 at 2:30 p.m. PT.

Diamond Foods, Inc. (“Diamond”) announced today that it has entered into a long-term strategic alliance agreement with Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort tied to its Pop Secret brand premium popcorn. Pop Secret popcorn is now the official popcorn of Walt Disney World Resort in Florida and Disneyland Resort in California.

Diamond Foods also plans to advertise on Disney-owned channels like ABC Family and the Disney Channel. Retail promotions, on-pack sweepstakes and digital content creation are all ways in which Pop Secret popcorn expects to work with Disney.

“We have been looking for an alliance that is in-line with our core brand values and we couldn’t be more delighted to announce this relationship with Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort,” said Burke Raine, Vice President of Marketing, Snacks, at Diamond. “Pop Secret popcorn and Disney both have deep associations with movies and encourage lasting memories shaped by fun family activities.”

Kabam, in collaboration with Disney Interactive and Lucasfilm Ltd., today announced the launch of Star Wars™: Uprising, the first mobile role-playing game that takes place between Star Wars™: Return of the Jedi and Star Wars™: The Force Awakens, following the death of the Emperor. The Kentucky Symphony Orchestra Huffs and Puffs to Blow Open its 24th Season with Disney’s Silly Symphony Celebration

The Kentucky Symphony Orchestra opens its 24th season October 3, 2015 with Disney in Concert: A Silly Symphony Celebration. The program is a tuneful and colorful celebration of 75 groundbreaking cartoons produced at the Walt Disney Studios between 1929 and 1939. During the production of these Academy Award-winning shorts Walt Disney perfected the skills essential to the creation of his first feature film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937). These advances and new developments in the use of color, special effects, character animation, music and storytelling continue to influence the art of animation today.

Mr. Disney will actually appear (via video) to explain the various techniques he and his animation team employed for each of these ground breaking animated shorts including The Ugly Duckling, The Skeleton Dance, The Three Little Pigs, Flowers and Trees, The Old Mill and Music Land. Composers Leigh Harline, Frank Churchill and Carl Stalling (who went on to Looney Toons fame) and others penned the scores to these classic cartoons, which the KSO will perform in sync with the newly restored digital film masters.

This performance will mark the first time A Silly Symphony Celebration has been performed in public (outside of last month’s 23rd annual Disney Expo held in Anaheim, CA). WKRC’s morning anchor Bob Herzog will share the stage with Mr. Disney and the KSO, acting as host for the premiere presentation.

The KSO presented the regional orchestral premiere of Disney’s Pirates of the Carribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl in 2012. In 2010 the KSO teamed up with members of the Warner animation team to create a cartoon concert that featured The Animaniacs as well as classic Bugs Bunny, Tom and Jerry and Pink Panther capers.

“Live musical accompaniment to cartoons creates a unique audio/visual genre, allowing both musicians and audience to experience and appreciate the indelible impact and role music plays in our cinematic viewing” stated KSO Music Director James Cassidy. “Besides, cartoons are where most of us were first exposed to classical music and the sound of the orchestra.”

In the studio the orchestra provides the accompaniment, mood, action and many of the sound effects in support of the characters voices and antics. The KSO’s percussionists and musicians will be quite busy covering all of the various instruments that are called for in these scores.

Step back to 1929-39 and join Walt Disney, Bob Herzog and members of the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra under the direction of James Cassidy, for its season opener and a rare chance to see these classic cartoons accompanied live by orchestra — 7:30 p.m., Saturday, October 3 at Florence Baptist Church at Mt. Minnie’s iconic style including polka dots, bows and instantly recognizable color palette will also be celebrated this month with events at both New York and London fashion weeks.

@MinnieStyle will showcase Minnie-inspired looks from the global fashion community, everyday fashion inspiration, couture and ready-to-wear designer collaborations, celebrities, bloggers and more. At New York Fashion Week, Disney is collaborating with Refinery29, the leading digital lifestyle media company for millennial-minded women, and CONFETTISYSTEM, to create a Minnie Mouse-inspired room, as part of 29Rooms, Refinery29’s interactive funhouse celebrating style and culture, which is open to the public in Brooklyn, NY, on September 11 and 12. Then from September 18 to 20, during London Fashion Week, Disney and the British Fashion Council will host the Minnie: Style Icon exhibition. The exhibition, which has been curated with the help of model and photographer Georgia May Jagger, will bring together photographs from the 1930’s through present day including archive imagery and sketches, celebrity portraits and fashion spreads. Images from the event will also be shared on the @MinnieStyle Instagram.

Georgia May Jagger said: “I’ve always been a Minnie fan, so I’m really excited to be working on this campaign showing how pop culture can influence fashion in a way that encourages excitement and creativity.”

The character of Minnie Mouse was created by Walt Disney and she made her debut alongside Mickey Mouse in Disney’s “Steamboat Willie” animation in 1928. Patterned after the 1920’s flapper as portrayed by actress Colleen Moore, her trademark polka dot skirt was inspired by Coco Chanel and her “Easy Jersey” collection. From her early pillbox flower hat, which inspired ladies hat trends to her famous bow and ears, Minnie has been looked to for style inspiration since her inception and has celebrity fans all over the world including Victoria Beckham, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kourtney Kardashian and Lady Gaga to name a few.

In each episode, teams will face two grueling challenges. First, they’ll face off in the Small Scare, where they must create a Halloween-themed design in just 45 minutes. One winning team gets an advantage in the big battle – the Spine Chiller. In the end, their creations will be judged by renowned cake decorator Shinmin Li and Emmy®-nominated make-up artist Brian Kinney, and a rotating panel of celebrity guest judges who are legends in the horror genre, including Robin Atkin Downes (The Strain), Benjamin Papac (The Walking Dead and upcoming film, GOOSEBUMPS), Bex Taylor-Klaus (MTV’s Scream ), and Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. One team will be eliminated after each episode. In the end only one team will be declared Halloween Wars Champion, and walk away with a $50,000 grand prize.

Famous Star Wars characters including Darth Vader, Stormtroopers and R2-D2 visited Shanghai on September 12, simultaneously marking the beginning of the 2015 Shanghai Tourism Festival and the upcoming release of the new Star Wars movie, ‘The Force Awakens.’

Organized by Disney and led by some of the hit film franchise’s most recognizable cast members, the ‘Star Wars: The Force Parade’ gathered together over 40 characters from across the series to date as they marched their way down Huaihai Road, one of Shanghai’s most famous upmarket thoroughfares.

The parade was welcomed by local Shanghai residents and visitors to the city alike, many of whom die-hard Star Wars fans expressing their joy and amazement at both the scale of the event and the intricacy and attention to detail of the costumes worn by those taking part.

In addition to the crowds that came to catch a glimpse of Star Wars characters in person, the parade was also broadcast on national television, giving more than 200 million viewers the opportunity to enjoy the spectacular celebration.
