The Walt Disney Company Board of Directors Extends Robert A. Iger’s Contract as Chairman and CEO to July 2, 2019

Board of Directors announced that it has extended Robert A. Iger’s contract as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer to July 2, 2019.

“Given Bob Iger’s outstanding leadership, his record of success in a changing media landscape, and his clear strategic vision for Disney’s future, it is obvious that the Company and its shareholders will be best served by his continued leadership as the Board conducts the robust process of identifying a successor and ensuring a smooth transition,” said Orin C. Smith, Independent Lead Director of the Disney Board.

Mr. Smith continued: “Mr. Iger has led The Walt Disney Company to unprecedented success during his 11 years as CEO, driving Disney to new creative heights, expanding the Company’s global reach, fostering technological innovation, and delivering year-after-year of record financial results. During his tenure, Mr. Iger has created enormous value for shareholders, with total shareholder return of 448%, compared to 144% for the S&P 500, and a dramatic increase in the Company’s market capitalization to $177 billion from $46 billion.”

“Leading this great company is a tremendous privilege, and I am honored to have been asked to continue serving as CEO through July 2, 2019,” Mr. Iger said. “Even with the incredible success the Company has achieved, I am confident that Disney’s best days are still ahead, and I look forward to continuing to build on our proven strategy for growth while working with the Board to identify a successor as CEO and ensure a successful transition.”

Details of the agreement will be included in a Form 8-K filed today.

Since Mr. Iger, 66, became CEO, The Walt Disney Company has been recognized as one of the “Most Reputable Companies” in both America and the world by Forbes magazine (2006-2017); one of “America’s Most Admired Companies” by Fortunemagazine (2009-2017); one of the “World’s Most Respected Companies” by Barron’s (2009-2016); one of the “Best Places to Launch a Career” by BusinessWeek magazine (2006-2010); and as “Company of the Year” by Yahoo Finance (2013).

When Roy and Walt Disney co-founded the Walt Disney Company in 1920, they had dreams of large success, but likely could not have fathomed becoming the world leader in fantasy, cartoon characters and family film. Neither would they have imagined continuing that leadership position in their artistic niche so long after their deaths. Although Roy was the silent, shy partner who addressed the financial end, Walt was the creative part of the duo and during his lifetime accrued 26 Academy Awards (still a record) for the company. Though Walt was the youngest brother, he died at the age of 65 in 1966. Roy was 73 at the time and postponed his retirement in order to open Disney World, which he later named Walt Disney World in honor of his brother. The new park transformed Orlando from a sleepy military and citrus town to America’s most popular family resort vacation destination with over 50 million visitors in 2016.

Only three years before his death, Walt Disney and his wife, Lillian, built a vacation home in Palm Springs as a getaway from Walt’s hectic work schedule and to enjoy their later years. The home stayed in the Disney family until 2015 and the new owners retained the charm and whimsy of the home created by this imaginative couple.

At 2,443 square feet, the four-bedroom, four-bath home has the clean lines of mid-century design, private in the front with cheerful red double entry doors and wide open to the outdoors in the back with views of the pool, raised spa, mountains and the Indian Canyons Golf Resort. As with most of the modernist homes of Palm Springs, the focus was on the enjoyment of outdoor living, relaxing and entertaining.

Furnished in period furnishings with an Art Deco flair, bold flushes of color against a neutral background is indicative of Walt’s colorful creations on film. Little surprises are found in various locations around the house and iconic Disney sayings are playfully written in the backs of closets challenging residents not to enjoy the unexpected chuckle. The listing agents are Klint Watkins and Ryan Cummings of HK Lane, an affiliate of Christie’s International Real Estate. The home is priced at $899,000.

Disney Ranked Most Intimate Brand among Millennials, According to MBLM’s Brand Intimacy 2017 Report

Disney ranked the most intimate brand among millennials, according to MBLM’s Brand Intimacy 2017 Report, which is the largest study of brands based on emotions. Brand intimacy is defined as a new paradigm that leverages and strengthens the emotional bonds between a person and a brand.

“Disney resonates with this age group because they grew up with the brand. It has kept up with their changing interests and now includes popular franchises like Star Wars and Marvel. Disney is also a mainstay for young families,” stated Mario Natarelli, MBLM’s managing partner. “Interestingly, five out of the top 10 brands for millennials are in the media & entertainment industry, which we believe reflects the prevailing mood of escapism and the need for respite.”

Following Disney, Amazon and Netflix ranked as the second and third most intimate brands for millennials. Comparatively, in MBLM’s 2015 report, Amazon placed first, followed by Apple and PlayStation.

The other brands that round out the top 10 are: Apple, Nintendo, Target, Chevrolet, Xbox, Google and YouTube.

The Brand Intimacy 2017 Report analyzes the responses of 6,000 consumers and 54,000 brand evaluations in the U.S., Mexico and UAE. The full report will be released on January 18, 2017.

Disney and ABC Invite Families to Read Together During Fifth Annual “Magic of Storytelling” Campaign and Second Annual Disney Reads Day

Today, Disney and ABC announced it will donate up to one million books to First Book, a nonprofit that provides new books to educators and organizations serving children from low-income families, during its fifth annual Magic of Storytelling campaign from now through March 31.

The Magic of Storytelling campaign aims to inspire families’ imaginations, cultivate a lifelong love of reading in kids, and bring books to underserved communities across the country. Over the past 16 years, Disney has donated 57 million books to First Book. Together with First Book, Disney Publishing Worldwide and Disney|ABC Television Group are committed to placing up to one million more books in the hands of children in need across the country.

“We are so proud to have donated more than 57 million books through our long-standing collaboration with Disney,” said Kyle Zimmer, president and CEO of First Book. “Each year, the excitement around the Magic of Storytelling campaign grows, inspiring millions of individuals to help us bring much-needed new books to children in need.”

As part of the Magic of Storytelling campaign, families are encouraged to put everything else down, pick up a book, and read independently or together during the second annual nationwide Disney Reads Day on February 4. Families can do this at home by taking time to read their favorite books together, or visit a participating Disney Store, Barnes & Noble, or other retail location for story-time, themed activities, and giveaways.

From now through March 31, Disney book donations (up to a total of one million donations) can be activated through various ways:

  • One for One Book Donation: Disney will donate one book to First Book for every eligible Disney book purchased at a Disney Store or participating retailer during that store’s participation window. (A list of eligible Disney books and participating retailers are available at magicofstorytelling.com.)
  • Share a Shelfie: Disney will also give one book for every “shelfie” — a selfie photo with a favorite book or in front of a bookshelf — shared on Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #MagicOfStorytelling.
  • Disney Story Central: Users of Disney’s digital reading platform can download digital books designed for parents and children to read together. Disney will donate one book to First Book for every book read in the app.
  • Magic of Storytelling Sweepstakes: Consumers can enter to win a library of 400 Disney books for their school and a personal library for their home in the Magic of Storytelling Sweepstakes. For every sweepstakes entry, Disney will donate one book to First Book. To enter the sweepstakes and for more rules and information, visit magicofstorytelling.com.
  • In-Store Events: Celebrate Disney Reads Day on February 4 at Disney Store, Barnes & Noble, and participating retailer locations nationwide. Families and fans can enjoy free family-friendly events like story time, coloring and activity sheets, and themed “shelfie” stations. Fans can also engage with Magic of Storytelling content on Disney’s network of social medial channels and digital publishing brands like Oh My Disney, Disney Style, Disney Family and Babble.

The campaign launches with a PSA voiced by Emma Watson, star of The Walt Disney Studios upcoming film “Beauty and the Beast,” coming to theaters on March 17. In the PSA, Watson highlights the impact of books on children. Click here to view the PSA.

Inspired by the film’s iconic themes of reading, discovery and imagination, the PSA will be shared with audiences across Disney including ABC affiliate stations, ABC Television Network, Freeform, Disney Channel, Disney XD, Disney Junior, Disney Store, Disney Cruise Line and Disney Resorts’ TVs, the ABC app, and Disney’s digital network of publishing brands including Oh My Disney and Babble. Additionally, each local ABC-owned station will donate 5,000 books to their local communities through schools and organizations in their respective markets.

Additionally, for the first time, The Walt Disney Company is extending the Magic of Storytelling campaign initiative to the educator community through focused outreach to schools and libraries, providing meaningful resources to facilitate in-class and in-home shared reading experiences. There are new shirt designs being added all the time, and since there are new characters being introduced constantly these days, the store will only keep expanding! Tees are always a great choice for the avid Star Wars fan, and this collection puts a fresh spin on the whole franchise. Rogue One will bring with it old and new characters; Mon Mothma from the old movies, Jyn Erso coming in as the new/old face of the Rebellion. The Jim Henson Company is hosting “Puppets for Puppetry,” a fundraiser for The Center for Puppetry Arts honoring the esteemed puppeteer Dave Goelz, best known to fans around the world as the performer of iconic puppet characters like The Great Gonzo, Dr. Bunsen Honeydew, Boober Fraggle, Traveling Matt, and many more. The event will be held at The Jim Henson Company’s historic Hollywood studio lot on September 24, 2016 – a doubly auspicious date for Henson friends and fans as it would have been Jim Henson’s 80th birthday. The unique live performance will be led by Tony Award-nominee John Tartaglia (Avenue Q) and promises to be a musical and fun evening.

The event benefits The Center for Puppetry Arts, whose mission is to inspire imagination, education and community through the global art of puppetry. The Atlanta-based nonprofit is the nation’s largest and only resource of its kind, featuring a worldwide puppetry collection, vibrant theatre spaces, and an education department that develops puppetry talent through workshops and performances. The Center for Puppetry Arts also uses the latest technology to offer its award-winning Distance Learning programs for PreK-adult through videoconferencing and recorded content.  The arts-infused workshops and interactive puppet performances are conducted via videoconferencing and are tailored to specific classroom topics and curriculum. The programs complement national curriculum standards in language arts, social studies, science, math and other areas and serve schools nationwide.

The Center for Puppetry Arts recently expanded to include a new gallery housing the Jim Henson Collection and the Worlds of Puppetry Global Collection. These two permanent exhibits together represent the most definitive display of both Henson puppets and other puppetry traditions from around the world.
