Disney*Pixar’s “Cars 3” Fuels Up For Nationwide Tour

Disney•Pixar’s “Cars 3” is hitting the road this month with Road to the Races, a nationwide tour inviting fans of #95 to gear up for the upcoming big-screen release. Life-size, character look-alikes of five-time Piston-Cup champion Lightning McQueen, tech-savvy trainer Cruz Ramirez and the sleek next-gen racer Jackson Storm will be rolling into 27 cities coast to coast to celebrate the new movie, which opens June 16, 2017.

“We are going to kick off the tour at Disney Springs in Walt Disney World on Thursday, March 23,” said Lylle Breier, senior vice president, worldwide marketing partnerships and special events for the Walt Disney Studios. “There will be fun activities for the whole family—plus a sneak peek of the movie.”

The roster of cities includes Miami, Dallas, Chicago, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Denver and Los Angeles, among others—the full list is available at CARS3tour.com. The “Road to the Races” nationwide tour wraps up in California with a visit to NASCAR at Sonoma at the Sonoma Raceway June 24-25, 2017, and the life-size character cars will also roll onto the red carpet for the “Cars 3” world premiere on Saturday, June 10, 2017.

A host of sponsors have signed on to support the tour, which includes a variety of activities.

  • Mattel presents an interactive play area, which sends Lightning McQueen and other racers down the gravity drop and launches them into action in new play sets that feature locations from the movie. Also on display will be a collection of die cast racers from past and present. Mattel is the leading global childhood development and play company.

Fans will be able to catch a sneak peek of the movie in the Cinetransformer Mobile Movie Theater. Visitors will also be able to take photos with the life-size character cars.

In addition, the sports national youth program NASCAR Acceleration Nation will display the science behind NASCAR racing, and elements from the NASCAR Hall of Fame will allow attendees to get up close and personal with the history of NASCAR.  

Mack Trucks, Inc. will transport the life-size character cars on the coast-to-coast tour.

The Walt Disney Company and Dole Food Company continue their multi-year healthy living initiative with Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, featuring consumer promotions, digital integrations, in-store activities and Disney-branded fruits and vegetables. The ongoing collaboration serves as part of a nutrition alliance aimed at helping parents encourage their kids and families to make healthier food choices and formally launched last fall with a successful campaign around Disney’s Moana.

The latest promotion, Disney Beauty and the Beast, features Belle, Beast, Lumiere and other beloved characters on DOLE Bananas, Pineapples and salads, and will continue through April 16. These characters also serve as the inspiration for a host of healthy recipes, serving suggestions and nutrition tips.

“Disney and Dole are working together to give parents high-quality, nutritional food options that make it easier for families to make healthy choices,” said John T. King, vice president-licensing, Disney Consumables. “The new program will combine Disney’s characters and stories with Dole’s fruits and vegetables to help inform and inspire families to live healthier.”

Disney and Dole will also debut healthy living programs themed to Disney·Pixar’s Cars 3 this summer and Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi later this year. This mission seeks to help change daily eating habits, one meal at a time, to create a lasting impact for families in the U.S. and Canada.

Last year’s dual-branded announcement at the 2016 Produce Marketing Association (PMA) Fresh Summit Convention in October promised the launch of an assortment of fresh DOLE produce featuring iconic Disney, Pixar, Star Wars and Marvel characters at grocery and retail stores nationwide.

Available today wherever music is sold and streamed, the “Beauty and the Beast” original motion picture soundtrack features an unforgettable score from eight-time Oscar®-winning composer Alan Menken along with new recordings of the original songs written by Menken and two-time Academy Award® winner Howard Ashman. Also included are three new songs written by Menken and three-time Oscar winner Tim Rice.

The story and characters audiences know and love come to spectacular life in Disney’s live-action adaptation of “Beauty and the Beast,” a stunning, cinematic event celebrating one of the most beloved tales ever told. Directed by Bill Condon from a screenplay by Stephen Chbosky and Evan Spiliotopoulos based on the 1991 animated film, “Beauty and the Beast” stars: Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, Luke Evans, Kevin Kline, Josh Gad, Ewan McGregor, Stanley Tucci, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and Audra McDonald with Ian McKellen and Emma Thompson. “Beauty and the Beast” opens in U.S. theaters on March 17, 2017.

The soundtrack also features three brand new recordings including the duet “Beauty and the Beast” by GRAMMY® nominated and multi-platinum selling artist Ariana Grande and 10-time GRAMMY, Oscar®-winning and multi-platinum selling singer/songwriter/musician John Legend. Celebrating one of the most beloved tales ever told, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast will hold its World Premiere in Los Angeles on March 2, in association with Swarovski. Beauty and the Beast (in cinemas March 17) is set to be a stunning cinematic event sparkling with thousands of Swarovski crystals, and this empowering new adaptation has inspired a bold and beautiful new jewelry line by Atelier Swarovski.

Swarovski manufactured the glass bell jar, based on Disney’s original design, and provided the 2,160 crystals used on Academy Award winning costume designer Jacqueline Durran’s design for Belle’s iconic yellow dress. Swarovski crystals were used in the opening scene on the dress worn by Madame de Garderobe, the Prince and Maestro Cadenza’s costumes and the crystal house also supplied vintage jewelry.

Jacqueline Durran commented: “Swarovski crystals were an important addition to the Prince’s costume and Belle’s yellow dress. For the Prince, crystals were a key element in recreating an 18th century coat – for the character to be wearing a coat covered with sparkling stones seemed the perfect way to represent his opulence. For Belle, the crystals were part of Garderobe’s finishing touch to the yellow gown, when added to the dress’s golden print they provided the final magical flourish.”

Academy Award-nominated set decorator Katie Spencer flew to Swarovski’s headquarters in the Austrian Tyrol to work with the company’s master cutters to manufacture the Bell Jar, based on Disney’s original design. The delicate frozen etching effect was carried out by an artisan craftsman in London. Decorating the top of its ornate dome is a bespoke-cut crystal finial shining with 543 facets. Further crystal embellishment to the set includes several music boxes made by Maurice, Belle’s father.

Katie Spencer commented: “Working with Swarovski was an incredible experience. Their crystals bring that extra touch of magic, especially to the beautiful centerpiece that is the Bell Jar. Swarovski’s technical team in Austria were so passionate, and their expert craftsmanship and dedication really shine through in the end result.”

The Atelier Swarovski collection will be available in stores and online from February 2017.

Kids Explore Magical Castles, Meet Princesses with Wounded Warrior Project

Children of Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP) veterans welcomed their favorite Disney® princesses during a meet-and-greet connection event. While the little ones mingled with the princesses, wounded warriors and family members bonded with fellow military families.

Kids dressed in their best finery for a tea party at the historic Water Street Inn, where Snow White, Cinderella, and other princesses joined them. Coloring, dancing, and sing-alongs did not leave anyone too tired to explore the famous Stillwater Ice Castles. Families marveled at frozen formations made of more than 10,000 glittering icicles.

“Our daughter was over the moon going to a princess party and seeing the awesome ice castles,” said Jamie Pryde, whose husband is an Army veteran. “And I was happy to be part of something that lets Wounded Warrior Project families spend time together.”

Connection events support the recovery needs of warriors by reintroducing them and their families to the bonds experienced during military service. Forming relationships with those who have shared experiences minimizes isolation and creates a support structure during the healing process.

“Wounded Warrior Project has helped our family build a support system that is made of other veterans who understand what we are going through,” Jamie said. “My husband wasn’t sure about joining at first because he didn’t think it was something for him, but we are so glad he did. We’ve had amazing experiences with the organization.”

WWP staff advised warriors and family members of additional services to support their recoveries. WWP offers a variety of programs and services that assist injured veterans with mental health, physical health and wellness, career and benefits counseling, and connecting with other warriors and their communities. Generous donors make it possible for wounded warriors to take part in outreach activities and benefit from program resources at no cost to them.

New Museum Exhibition to Feature Original Works by Renowned Comic Book Artist Alex Ross

“Superheroes and Superstars: The Works of Alex Ross”—a new exhibition featuring the work of one of the world’s greatest comic book artists—will be on view at the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley (MSV) from February 11 through May 14, 2017.

The MSV is the first venue to host this traveling exhibition, which has been organized by the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Massachusetts.

According to “Superheroes and Superstars” curator Jesse Kowalski, Alex Ross has revitalized classic superheroes into works of fine art with his unique, painted photo-realistic style.

“The MSV is thrilled to be the first venue to present Superheroes and Superstars,” notes MSV Executive Director Dana Hand Evans, who adds that the Museum jumped at the chance to bring the exhibition to the region. “Alex Ross is one of the premier illustrators of our time,” says Evans. Along with offering comic book fans a rare opportunity to see Ross’s original artwork of classic superheroes, such as Wonder Woman, Superman, and Spider-Man, Evans says the exhibition illustrates the Museum’s commitment to present contemporary art in the Shenandoah Valley.

“Superheroes and Superstars” includes more than 100 original works created by Alex Ross, all on public display for the first time. Most of the works in the exhibition are on loan from Ross’s personal collection.

The new exhibition features Alex Ross’s well-known images of superheroes, villains, and his recent paintings of popular culture icons, such as The Beatles and Monty Python. Paintings, sketches, and models from his childhood and college years will also be on view, including “Spidey” booklets that Ross created at the age of four, action figures he made when he was 11 years old, and a self-portrait for a high school art class. Some of Ross’s more recent works in “Superheroes and Superstars” include “A Tale of Two Reeves,” a 2016 painting illustrating the two actors audiences most identify with Superman; the 2016 “Hulk Marvelmania” poster painting; “Flash Gordon,” a 2015 painting marking the 35th anniversary of the “Flash Gordon” film; and Ross’s variant cover for “Star Wars” #1, an homage to the original 1977 issue for Marvel’s relaunch of the classic “Star Wars” comic book series.

 

From 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 1, the MSV will host Alex Ross for a rare signing event. Prints and Alex Ross merchandise will be available for purchase in the Museum Store. Those interested in attending the signing may bring up to three items per person (no sketches and/or portfolio reviews). While a fee is not required to attend the signing event, MSV admission will apply to view “Superheroes and Superstars.”

The exhibition’s display at the MSV is sponsored by Shenandoah Country Q102.

A regional cultural center, the MSV is located at 901 Amherst Street in Winchester, Virginia. The MSV includes galleries, the Glen Burnie House, and seven acres of gardens. The galleries and exhibitions are open year-round; the house and gardens are open April through December. The site is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. January through March and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. April through December. Admission is $10 or $8 for seniors and youth ages 13 to 18. The world premiere studio recording of Disney’s Freaky Friday, the new musical based on the beloved novel by Mary Rodgers and two hit Disney films, is released digitally by Walt Disney Records today, February 10, 2017. Featuring a book by Bridget Carpenter (TV’s “Friday Night Lights” and “Parenthood”) and a score by the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award®-winning team of Tom Kitt (music) and Brian Yorkey (lyrics), creators of the celebrated Broadway musicals Next to Normal and If/Then, Freaky Friday had its world premiere at the Tony Award-winning Signature Theatre in Arlington, VA in fall 2016. The production was directed by two-time Tony nominee (Rocky Horror Show and Memphis) and artistic director of the world-renowned La Jolla Playhouse Christopher Ashley and choreographed by Olivier Award winner and Tony nominee Sergio Trujillo (Jersey Boys; On Your Feet!).

Buzzfeed named the show one of the best musicals of 2016, raving, “Freaky Friday captures the best of great Disney musicals. The catchy, surprisingly deep score by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey is their best work since Next to Normal.” The Washington Post calls the show “a polished, peppy, modern fairy tale” with “up-to-the-minute pop cultural relevance,” and Variety hails its “timeless appeal” and “rousing, up-tempo score with stirring melodies.”

The two stars of the Signature Theatre production, Broadway performers Heidi Blickenstaff (Something Rotten!; [title of show]) and Emma Hunton (Next to Normal), reprise their “marvelously sung, resonantly comical” (The Washington Post) performances as mother and daughter Katherine and Ellie Blake on the studio recording. The studio cast also features Jason Gotay (Bring It On The Musical) as Adam, Alan H. Green (Sister Act, School of Rock) as Mike, Ann Harada (Avenue Q, 9 to 5, Cinderella) as Torrey, and Jake Heston Miller as Fletcher, with Shayna Blass, Tyler Bowman, Sherri Edelen, Katie Ladner, Jess LeProtto, Storm Lever, Thaddeus McCants, Tanisha Moore, Julian Ramos, Preston Sadleir, Bobby Smith, Jason Sweettooth Williams and Natasha Yvette Williams.

Music supervision for Disney’s Freaky Friday Studio Cast Recording is by Bryan Perri, orchestrations are by Tom Kitt and Michael Starobin, vocal arrangements are by Tom Kitt and Carmel Dean, and dance and incidental arrangements are by Tom Kitt.

The Freaky Friday Studio Cast Recording was recorded in Manhattan at The DiMenna Center for Classical Music in December 2016.

When an overworked mother and her teenage daughter magically swap bodies, they have just one day to put things right again before mom’s big wedding. Freaky Friday, a new musical based on the beloved novel by Mary Rodgers and two hit Disney films, is a hilarious, contemporary update of an American classic in which a mother and daughter really see what it is to be a family and experience each other’s lives first-hand, if only for a day.

Set in the present day, Freaky Friday features a tuneful pop-rock score, fittingly for a work that has effortlessly updated throughout its several iterations.  The novel (1972), the first film starring Barbara Harris and Jodie Foster (1976), the second film starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan (2003) and this new stage musical are all set in their respective present day.

Freaky Friday was developed by Disney Theatrical Productions expressly for licensing via partner Musical Theatre International first to professional and then amateur theatres, with productions taking place at La Jolla Playhouse, Cleveland Play House and the Alley Theatre this year. It follows the trajectory of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, which is now available to professional theatres worldwide following acclaimed engagements at La Jolla Playhouse and Paper Mill Playhouse.
