Walt Disney Records Set To Release Planes: Fire & Rescue Original Motion Picture Soundtrack On July 15

The Planes: Fire & Rescue original motion picture soundtrack takes off July 15

The Planes: Fire & Rescue original motion picture soundtrack takes off July 15

Award-winning composer Mark Mancina, who won a Grammy® for Best Soundtrack Album (with Phil Collins) for his work on Disney’s 1999 feature “Tarzan,” produced and composed the score for “Planes: Fire & Rescue.”  The Planes: Fire & Rescue original motion picture soundtrack takes off July 15.

Composer Mark Mancina returned to the runway to create the score for “Planes: Fire & Rescue.” As composer for “Disney’s Planes,” Mancina was able to take themes established in the first film and update them to reflect the unique and heroic nature of “Planes: Fire & Rescue.” “Dusty’s more grown-up so the music wanted to be a little more grown-up—a little bit richer. There’s an arc to his life and the music needed to follow that arc.”

Mancina opted for a more orchestral sound in the new score. “It comes from an earthy direction, so there’s a lot of orchestral percussion, French horn, strings and woodwinds,” he says. “There is added texture from other types of instruments, but the heart of the score is an orchestra.”

The melodic score was recorded with a 90-piece orchestra. For Dusty’s training montage, filmmakers agreed it called for a bold acoustic piano that would stand out from the orchestra. Says Mancina, “We were lucky enough to have Bruce Hornsby play piano on the score, which brought a completely different color and a much more mature feel to the score.”

Hornsby, a multiple Grammy®-winning artist, also played a special cue that can be heard near the end of the film, supporting the serious and emotional tone filmmakers sought.

Brad Paisley performs two new songs for the film, including “Runway Romance,” which was written by director Bobs Gannaway andDanny Jacob, and “All In,” a song Paisley signed on to write and perform after hearing of the film’s firefighting themes. “My father’s a firefighter,” says Paisley. “He was my whole life. And my brother-in-law and several family members are firefighters. I was really honored to pay tribute to them. I sat down after seeing a rough cut of the movie and it came to me very quickly.

“My dad was president of the volunteer fire department, which was walking distance from our house,” continues Paisley. “I spent several days of each week there with him—any time the whistle blew, he went. It was truly inspiring to watch him lead that way. It’s a strange and wonderful mentality that these people have. They get so excited about that opportunity to help. My favorite line in the song is, ‘Where there’s smoke and flames, and everybody needs out, I’m all in.'”

Paisley also lends his voice in a cameo appearance as a pickup truck in Honkers Sports Bar.

Newcomer/singer/songwriter Spencer Lee performs “Still I Fly,” a song he co-composed with his writing partners Windy Wagner and Michael “Smidi” Smith. “Still I Fly” can be heard when Dusty, after discovering that he may never race again, leaves Propwash Junction en route to Piston Peak to train as an aerial firefighter.

Remembering the Anniversary of Clarence Charles “Ducky” Nash Passing on February 20, 1985

Clarence Charles "Ducky" Nash (December 7, 1904 – February 20, 1985)

Clarence Charles “Ducky” Nash
(December 7, 1904 – February 20, 1985)

As Walt once said, Mickey is Mickey, Donald is Donald. But we all know that there are some very talented people that have been behind these characters for ages. Many of which we have had as guests here at DizRadio.com. And one of those first people to bring life into Walt’s characters was that of Clarence Charles “Ducky” Nash, the original, yes you guessed it, Donald Duck.

Donald has been Mickey’s friend and one of the fab five for ages. From his hot temper, to silly antics, you instantly fell in love with Donald. He was a character many could relate to. We all get hot headed, lose our temper and get frustrated when family members (like his nephews) cause trouble. But always in the end Donald was happy, humble and loveable. To this day Donald is still a fan favorite.

Clarence was such a key player in many classic animated cartoons that he was also the original voice of Tom in ‘Tom & Jerry’. And his hometown of Watonga, Oklahoma honors him with a street named after him. Walt had known who Nash was previously and asked him for information autions and assigned him to do some family of ducks in an animated feature. It would go on to be a lifelong career for him. The last film to feature the talents of our favorite duck was in ‘Mickey’s Christmas Carol’, although some commercials and promos afterward before his passing were still in existence.

So let’s not forgot how important these actors are in bringing our favorite characters to life. And in honor of the Anniversary of Nash’s death today, let’s all watch some Donald Duck and laugh the day away in these shorts that stand the test of time.

Disney’s Gravity Falls ‘Six Strange Tales’ a Show with Wit and Charm

Gravity Falls "Six Strange Tales" on DVD

Gravity Falls “Six Strange Tales” on DVD

With Halloween near, pumpkins carved and all things spooky in the air, it seems fitting that we venture to our favorite destination in Oregon, Gravity Falls. Gravity Falls is Disney’s animated adventure for children that is full of mystery and excitement following the adventures of Dipper and Mabel, twin siblings spending summer with their Great Uncle. In the latest DVD release Gravity Falls – ‘Six Strange Tales’ we uncover all fun from the Mystery Shack as this tourist trap nabs customers’ money in the visiting.  This DVD, arriving on October 15th comes fully loaded with over 2 hours of shows and an awesome FREE Exclusive Mystery Book: Journal #3.

To begin, the journal is a fantastic edition to this DVD release. The artwork found inside is wonderfully illustrated, and contains all the elements you uncover throughout this dark humor series that begins with the first episode “Tourist Trapped” when Dipper uncovers the mysterious journal complete with a map of Gravity Falls, Gnomes, Undead, Floating Eyeballs and to top it off, Gravity Falls postcards filled out by your favorite unforgettable characters.

This journal adds just the right touch to this package being printed on plus matte stock with areas for you to write in your own Gravity Falls experiences.

When it comes to the ‘Six Strange Tales’, this DVD is fully loaded. From a pristine DVD transfer, the animation looks beautiful. The hard edge lines and bright contract colors really pop and add to the story telling. In the first story, ‘Tourist Trapped’, we learn what exactly Gravity Falls is when Dipper (Jason Ritter) and Mabel (Kristen Schaal) go to live with their Great Uncle (Alex Hirsch). While there, spending the summer, Mabel’s new boyfriend seems unwittingly different and forces the twins to come to terms with learning this town has odd and strange secrets (including a rainbow puking gnome). This really sets the tone for the series. We learn just who the twins are, the Great Uncle’s agenda, and how Gravity Falls needs to be explored.

As you continue to watch the release, you cannot help but soak up all six strange tales in one sitting. The series is so great, and brilliant that after the first episode you are hooked. Continuing with ‘The Legend of the Gobblewonker’, where rumors are spread that a Lake Monster is living in the lake not too far from the Mystery Shack, to ‘Headhunters’ as Dipper and Mabel uncover a a secret door and a forgotten Wax Museum, to disc highlights such as ‘Dipper vs. Manliness’ where he learns about danger, being a man and encounters a talking bear, this series and collection of “Six Strange Tales” IS NOT TO BE MISSED!

Gravity Falls ‘Six Strange Tales’ brings something unique to animation that has been missing from some time, WIT!

Gravity Falls ‘Six Strange Tales’ brings something unique to animation that has been missing from some time, WIT! The show is smart, witty and funny. It doesn’t take the normal route and treats its viewers as education children and adults who can follow the odd humor, jokes, puns, and most of all make you laugh along the way. Gravity Falls talks to you as a viewer, not down to you at anytime. And with characters like Great Uncle, you cannot help but laugh, shake your head, and also laugh along with him dim witted guidance. And let’s not forget the trippy, music from the show opener, and continues throughout the show. It sets the fun mood and feel of the show.

Shows like Gravity Falls happen once every so often, and this one hits the mark. The eccentric characters reel you in as the stories unfold into oddly strange tales leaving you wanting more.

Famed Disney Animator Floyd Norman To Visit the Wren’s Nest

As part of its 100th anniversary, the Wren’s Nest House Museum is hosting legendary Disney animator and storyteller Floyd Norman for two Atlanta events in October.

100th Anniversary of The Wren’s Nest House Museum

100th Anniversary of The Wren’s Nest House Museum

The Wren’s Nest, the former home of Joel Chandler Harris, was established as Atlanta’s first house museum a century ago funded with contributions from Teddy Roosevelt, Andrew Carnegie and children from Atlanta Public Schools. Harris, a journalist and author, is most famous for recording the African American stories of Brer Rabbit and the other “critters,” as told by his character Uncle Remus. The Wren’s Nest continues to celebrate these tales today, as well as contemporary storytelling, both oral and written.

The Wren’s Nest is hosting Norman, the first African-American animator to work at Disney, with events open to the public Oct. 23 and Oct. 24. Norman’s work is seen in Sleeping Beauty, The Jungle Book and many other animated pieces. Named as a Disney Legend in 2007, Norman more recently published his book, “My Animated Life: A Lifetime of Tips, Tricks, Techniques and Stories from an Animation Legend.”

Norman shares with the Wren’s Nest a love of storytelling and the Brer Rabbit tales. In the 1980s, Norman created a story “A Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah Christmas” using, as he put it, “the funny, clever, and outrageous characters from Song of the South.”

“Despite the fact that Song of the South remains a controversial topic, it is my sincere hope that a new generation will enjoy delightful characters including Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox and Brer Bear,” Norman said. “They are wonderful stories and an important part of African-American folklore.”

Clips of the animated stories from Song of the South will be shown and discussed at both events. Norman describes these scenes as “some of the finest cartoon animation to ever come out of the Disney Studios.” In his appearance at the Auburn Avenue Research Library Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. Norman will participate in a conversation with the audience led by Stephane Dunn, co-director of cinema, television and emerging media studies at Morehouse College. At the event co-hosted by the Department of Film and Media Studies at Emory University in 205 White Hall on Oct. 24 at 7:30 p.m., the discussion will be moderated by Eddy Von Mueller. Norman will talk about his almost 50 years as an animation artist and storyteller beginning at a time when African Americans were rare in the field. He will also talk about the future of animation. Norman has said that this is the most exciting time this art form has ever seen.

“We hope that our 100th anniversary and the events featuring Mr. Norman will promote discussion about the timeless appeal of the Brer Rabbit stories and the possibility of Disney revisiting some of the stories compiled by Joel Chandler Harris,” said Sue Gilman, executive director of the Wren’s Nest. “The Wren’s Nest is committed to fostering and advancing storytelling in its many forms and we’re delighted to be able to present Mr. Norman, who is a consummate storyteller, to Atlanta. We’re also most fortunate to have the opportunity to work with Emory and Morehouse and the folks at the Auburn Avenue Research Library on this program.”

“Monsters University” and “Pacific Rim” take Hollywood Film Awards Honors

The 17th Annual Hollywood Film Awards announced today that Disney/Pixar’s “Monsters University,” directed by Dan Scanlon and produced by Kori Rae, will be the recipient of the Hollywood Animation Award, and Warner Bros. Disney • Pixar's Monsters University

Disney • Pixar’s Monsters University

The announcement was made today by Carlos de Abreu, founder and executive producer of the Hollywood Film Awards.

He said: “John Knoll’s groundbreaking work on ‘Pacific Rim’ sets a new standard in visual effects. The robots and monsters in the film truly come to life through the best visual effects of the year. Once again, the animation and storytelling of ‘Monsters University’ reflects Pixar creativity and greatness.”

The award will be bestowed at the Hollywood Film Awards Gala Ceremony on Monday evening, October 21, 2013 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills.

The Hollywood Film Awards honors cherished stars, filmmakers and up-and-coming talent, and traditionally kicks off the film awards season with the biggest stars and top industry executives in attendance.

“We are very proud to be the first stop of the awards season. In the last ten years, a total of 96 Oscar® nominations and 34 Oscars® were given to the honorees of the Hollywood Film Awards,” said de Abreu.

Last year’s awards show received more than 41 million media impressions, in addition to more than 300 million online and print readers’ impressions.

About Dan Scalon
Dan Scanlon made his animated feature directorial debut with Disney/Pixar’s 14th feature film, “Monsters University,” which has grossed over $700 million dollars worldwide since its June 2013 release. He also co-wrote the film’s story and screenplay. As a youngster in Clawson, Michigan, Scanlon possessed a love for Warner Bros. cartoons, animated Disney films and, as fate would have it, Pixar short films. His passion inspired him to study film and animation in high school and in college where he focused on illustration at Columbus College of Art and Design (CCAD). Upon graduating from CCAD, Scanlon began working as an animator and story artist for Character Builders, a 2D animation company that produced feature and commercial work in Columbus, Ohio. Scanlon joined Pixar Animation Studios in September 2001 as a storyboard artist on  Disney/Pixar’s award-winning features “Cars” and “Toy Story 3.” During the initial production stages for both films, he worked to translate the director’s story ideas into the film’s first visual format: storyboards.

With John Lasseter, Scanlon also co-directed the original short film “Mater and the Ghostlight,” which is included as one of the bonus features on the “Cars” DVD.  In addition to his work at Pixar, Scanlon simultaneously wrote and directed the live action film “Tracy,” released in 2009.

About John Knoll
John Knoll is Chief Creative Officer and Senior Visual Effects Supervisor at Industrial Light & Magic (ILM). Over the course of his career, Knoll has been honored with three Academy Award nominations for his work on “Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones,” “Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace,” which earned him a BAFTA nomination, and “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,” in which he was also honored with a BAFTA nomination. Knoll’s resume also includes “Mission to Mars,” “Deep Blue Sea,” “Star Trek: First Contact” and “Mission: Impossible” among others. In 2006 Knoll completed work on “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” for which he received both a BAFTA and an Academy Award(r). Most recently Knoll worked as Visual Effects Supervisor on Guillermo del Toro’s science fiction epic “Pacific Rim”.
