American Girl Gives Girls More Characters And More Stories To Love In 2017!

February 14, 2017 Disney News No Comments
American Girl Gives Girls More Characters And More Stories To Love In 2017!

American Girl Gives Girls More Characters And More Stories To Love In 2017!

For more than 30 years, girls have met and fallen in love with American Girl characters—both historical and contemporary—that have helped build self-confidence, inspire creativity, and give a broader understanding of the world. Now, in response to thousands of impassioned requests from fans for more options, American Girl is introducing a new series of contemporary characters and stories designed to speak to even more girls’ interests, backgrounds, and experiences. The fresh approach gives voice to a diverse range of personalities and backgrounds and new ways for girls to connect with smart, compelling, and aspirational characters that they can relate to and love. The new 2017 American Girl characters, including those from today and yesterday, will come to life via beautiful 18-inch dolls and unique outfits and accessories, as well as a variety of different content forms that tell their stories—from books to live-action specials to other digital platforms like online videos, web series, and apps.

Kicking things off on February 16, American Girl fans will meet the newest contemporary character, Tenney Grant. A rising star in the Nashville music scene, Tenney is a breakout songwriter finding the heart to be herself. Tenney comes to life for girls via a beautiful 18-inch Tenney doll featuring long, curly blond hair and warm brown eyes, an exclusive outfit that reflects her artistic side, and a book chronicling her story. The Tenney collection also comes with several music-inspired outfits and accessories, including a miniature version of an authentic Taylor® GS Mini® guitar that can be strummed and plays three songs, and a two-sided stage and dressing room that features more than 40 pieces, like an amp, microphone, and working spotlights. And keeping the beat as Tenney’s drummer is newcomer Logan Everett, American Girl’s first-ever boy character. Logan’s assortment includes an 18-inch doll with short brown hair, gray eyes, and an original outfit, as well as his very own rhythmic drum set.

Published by Scholastic and written by award-winning author Kellen Hertz, the Tenney book series will inspire girls to share their authentic selves and find the courage to pursue their dreams. Tenney has a world of feelings, ideas, and music welling up inside her—all she needs now is the right stage to share what’s in her heart. As her star rises, Tenney goes from writing songs in her family’s backyard, to taking center-stage at her school Jamboree, to playing her music in a professional concert. She learns quickly that it takes hard work and grit to stay on the path to becoming a great performer—but it’s going to take extra determination if she wants to stay true to herself and her music.

Other Tenney-related initiatives being held throughout the year include the following:

  • Tenney Online and Digital Play: Girls can visit the Tenney-dedicated site at americangirl.com/tenneyplay for free book excerpts, videos, activities, wallpaper and e-cards, and much more.
  • Tenney Original Music: American Girl worked with Nashville’s Erika Wollam Nichols, CEO of one of the world’s preeminent listening rooms, The Bluebird Cafe, and renowned artist manager and music producer Denise Stiff to find singer-songwriters from around the country to write Tenney-inspired music. Songs were chosen from nine girls and are featured throughout the Tenney books, products, and behind-the-scenes videos on American Girl’s YouTube channel.
  • Tenney Retail Events: Starting February 16, American Girl stores are hosting Tenney’s Debut Event, where girls will get a first look at her full product collection, plus enjoy in-store activities, colorful crafts, giveaways, and a fun photo opportunity. For more details on the in-store events, visit americangirl.com/retail.
  • Radio Disney Music Awards: American Girl and Tenney will come together for the 2017 Radio Disney Music Awards to support the Heroes for Change Award and Music In Our Schools initiative during the show. The telecast, “Disney Channel Presents the 2017 Radio Disney Music Awards,” airs Sunday, April 30 (7:00–9 :00 p.m. EDT) on Disney Channel.

The Tenney collection is available on February 16, 2017, through American Girl’s catalogue; at americangirl.com; at all American Girl retail locations nationwide; and at American Girl specialty boutiques at select Indigo and Chapters in Canada and El Palacio de Hierro locations in Mexico City in March. New Museum Exhibition to Feature Original Works by Renowned Comic Book Artist Alex Ross

New Museum Exhibition to Feature Original Works by Renowned Comic Book Artist Alex Ross

New Museum Exhibition to Feature Original Works by Renowned Comic Book Artist Alex Ross

“Superheroes and Superstars: The Works of Alex Ross”—a new exhibition featuring the work of one of the world’s greatest comic book artists—will be on view at the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley (MSV) from February 11 through May 14, 2017.

The MSV is the first venue to host this traveling exhibition, which has been organized by the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Massachusetts.

According to “Superheroes and Superstars” curator Jesse Kowalski, Alex Ross has revitalized classic superheroes into works of fine art with his unique, painted photo-realistic style.

“The MSV is thrilled to be the first venue to present Superheroes and Superstars,” notes MSV Executive Director Dana Hand Evans, who adds that the Museum jumped at the chance to bring the exhibition to the region. “Alex Ross is one of the premier illustrators of our time,” says Evans. Along with offering comic book fans a rare opportunity to see Ross’s original artwork of classic superheroes, such as Wonder Woman, Superman, and Spider-Man, Evans says the exhibition illustrates the Museum’s commitment to present contemporary art in the Shenandoah Valley.

“Superheroes and Superstars” includes more than 100 original works created by Alex Ross, all on public display for the first time. Most of the works in the exhibition are on loan from Ross’s personal collection.

The new exhibition features Alex Ross’s well-known images of superheroes, villains, and his recent paintings of popular culture icons, such as The Beatles and Monty Python. Paintings, sketches, and models from his childhood and college years will also be on view, including “Spidey” booklets that Ross created at the age of four, action figures he made when he was 11 years old, and a self-portrait for a high school art class. Some of Ross’s more recent works in “Superheroes and Superstars” include “A Tale of Two Reeves,” a 2016 painting illustrating the two actors audiences most identify with Superman; the 2016 “Hulk Marvelmania” poster painting; “Flash Gordon,” a 2015 painting marking the 35th anniversary of the “Flash Gordon” film; and Ross’s variant cover for “Star Wars” #1, an homage to the original 1977 issue for Marvel’s relaunch of the classic “Star Wars” comic book series.

From 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 1, the MSV will host Alex Ross for a rare signing event. Prints and Alex Ross merchandise will be available for purchase in the Museum Store. Those interested in attending the signing may bring up to three items per person (no sketches and/or portfolio reviews). While a fee is not required to attend the signing event, MSV admission will apply to view “Superheroes and Superstars.”

The exhibition’s display at the MSV is sponsored by Shenandoah Country Q102.

A regional cultural center, the MSV is located at 901 Amherst Street in Winchester, Virginia. The MSV includes galleries, the Glen Burnie House, and seven acres of gardens. The galleries and exhibitions are open year-round; the house and gardens are open April through December. The site is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. January through March and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. April through December. Admission is $10 or $8 for seniors and youth ages 13 to 18. General admission is always free to youth ages 12 and under and to MSV Members. http://www.theMSV.org

“Beauty and the Beast” to Become a Brand-New Stage Spectacular Aboard Disney Cruise Line

"Beauty and the Beast" to Become a Brand-New Stage Spectacular Aboard Disney Cruise Line

“Beauty and the Beast” to Become a Brand-New Stage Spectacular Aboard Disney Cruise Line

A tale as old as time gets ready to take the stage with “Beauty and the Beast,” a brand-new musical production inspired by Disney’s live-action adaptation of the animated classic. The show will expand upon the most imaginative elements of the highly anticipated live-action and classic films and delight Disney Cruise Line guests aboard the Disney Dream, beginning this November.

Audiences will once again fall in love with the enchanting fairytale as they embark on a sweeping journey to discover the power of transformation through true love and courage. This new production of “Beauty and the Beast” celebrates the romance, adventure and magic of the live-action film, weaving in the charm and nostalgia of the award-winning animated feature.

“Beauty and the Beast” will bring the timeless fable to life like never before, featuring a style of theater that interlaces classic storytelling elements with cutting-edge technology, to create a unique, theatrical experience in the 1,340-seat Walt Disney Theatre. An innovative take on the story will transform renowned songs into spectacular, show-stopping numbers, and lavish costumes and puppetry will bring a fresh perspective to beloved characters.

Re-imagining a tale as old as time

Drawing inspiration from the live-action film, the stage musical uses the scenic motif of a music box to guide spectators through the story. Set designer, Jason Sherwood (“Paint Your Wagon,” “Frozen, A Musical Spectacular”), worked in concert with video designer, Aaron Rhyne (“Frozen, A Musical Spectacular,” Broadway’s “Anastasia”), to create a transforming set that will take audiences on a magical journey through the music box, from Belle’s provincial French town to the Beast’s mysterious castle.

To bring “Beauty and the Beast” to the stage, Disney assembled an all-star creative team, led by director and choreographer Connor Gallagher (“Tangled: The Musical,” “Found”). Gallagher collaborated with writer Sara Wordsworth (“Frozen, A Musical Spectacular,” Broadway’s “In Transit”) and a talented collection of Broadway artists to create an imaginative, new approach to this iconic story.

Through a combination of high-definition projections, dynamic scenery and a little bit of Disney magic, this new interpretation of “Beauty and the Beast” will create a visual panorama that reaches beyond the stage and into the audience. Complementing the immersive set, lighting design by four-time Tony Award-nominated, Japhy Weideman, punctuates the powerful emotions of the classic tale.

Orchestrating a song as old as rhyme

“Beauty and the Beast” features songs from the original animated film’s award-winning soundtrack by acclaimed composer Alan Menken and lyricist Howard Ashman. Complementing the score, the show also includes two of the new songs created for the live-action film by Menken and lyricist Tim Rice, “How Does a Moment Last Forever” and “Days in the Sun.” Enchanting arrangements and orchestrations by Matt Castle and Frank Galgano (“Into the Woods”) will bring a unique musical identity to the production.

Beloved songs like “Belle,” “Something There” and “Beauty and the Beast” will receive a musical makeover that reflect the show’s stylized approach, while songs like “Gaston” and “Be Our Guest” will leap to the stage as joyful and exuberant production numbers.

One of the most iconic songs in the Disney canon has been completely re-imagined for the stage. “Be Our Guest” is becoming a multi-course French dinner rooted in imagination and fantasy. Rousing choreography and dazzling visual effects will fill the stage during this full-fledged spectacle.

Unveiling the magic of the enchanted objects

Blurring the line between costuming and puppetry, costume designer Sarah Cubbage (Broadway’s “Skylight”) and puppet designer Lake Simons (“Etiquette Unraveled”) joined forces to give life to the enchanted objects of “Beauty and the Beast.” Beloved characters like Lumiere, Mrs. Potts and Cogsworth are realized in an unprecedented way, using innovative puppetry and elaborate costumes to bring these characters to life in their true scale.

“Beauty and the Beast” will debut during the Disney Dream voyage departing Nov. 6, 2017, joining an incredible lineup of Broadway-style stage productions aboard the ship, including “The Golden Mickeys” and “Disney’s Believe.” The Disney Dream sails three- and four-night cruises to the Bahamas from Port Canaveral, Fla.

The Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures live-action film “Beauty and the Beast” premieres in theaters March 17, on land and at sea aboard Disney Cruise Line ships.

To learn more about Disney Cruise Line or to book a vacation, guests can visit disneycruise.com, call Disney Cruise Line at 888-DCL-2500 or contact their travel agent.

World Premiere Studio Recording Of Disney Freaky Friday A New Musical

World Premiere Studio Recording Of Disney Freaky Friday A New Musical

World Premiere Studio Recording Of Disney Freaky Friday A New Musical

The world premiere studio recording of Disney’s Freaky Friday, the new musical based on the beloved novel by Mary Rodgers and two hit Disney films, is released digitally by Walt Disney Records today, February 10, 2017. The album is available now wherever digital music is sold (http://disneymusic.co/FreakyFriday) and streamed (http://disneymusic.co/FreakyFridayW).

Physical CDs will be available beginning March 17 and can be pre-ordered here: http://disneymusic.co/FreakyFridayAMP.

Featuring a book by Bridget Carpenter (TV’s “Friday Night Lights” and “Parenthood”) and a score by the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award®-winning team of Tom Kitt (music) and Brian Yorkey (lyrics), creators of the celebrated Broadway musicals Next to Normal and If/Then, Freaky Friday had its world premiere at the Tony Award-winning Signature Theatre in Arlington, VA in fall 2016. The production was directed by two-time Tony nominee (Rocky Horror Show and Memphis) and artistic director of the world-renowned La Jolla Playhouse Christopher Ashley and choreographed by Olivier Award winner and Tony nominee Sergio Trujillo (Jersey Boys; On Your Feet!).

Buzzfeed named the show one of the best musicals of 2016, raving, “Freaky Friday captures the best of great Disney musicals. The catchy, surprisingly deep score by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey is their best work since Next to Normal.” The Washington Post calls the show “a polished, peppy, modern fairy tale” with “up-to-the-minute pop cultural relevance,” and Variety hails its “timeless appeal” and “rousing, up-tempo score with stirring melodies.”

The two stars of the Signature Theatre production, Broadway performers Heidi Blickenstaff (Something Rotten!; [title of show]) and Emma Hunton (Next to Normal), reprise their “marvelously sung, resonantly comical” (The Washington Post) performances as mother and daughter Katherine and Ellie Blake on the studio recording. The studio cast also features Jason Gotay (Bring It On The Musical) as Adam, Alan H. Green (Sister Act, School of Rock) as Mike, Ann Harada (Avenue Q, 9 to 5, Cinderella) as Torrey, and Jake Heston Miller as Fletcher, with Shayna Blass, Tyler Bowman, Sherri Edelen, Katie Ladner, Jess LeProtto, Storm Lever, Thaddeus McCants, Tanisha Moore, Julian Ramos, Preston Sadleir, Bobby Smith, Jason Sweettooth Williams and Natasha Yvette Williams.

Music supervision for Disney’s Freaky Friday Studio Cast Recording is by Bryan Perri, orchestrations are by Tom Kitt and Michael Starobin, vocal arrangements are by Tom Kitt and Carmel Dean, and dance and incidental arrangements are by Tom Kitt.

The Freaky Friday Studio Cast Recording was recorded in Manhattan at The DiMenna Center for Classical Music in December 2016.

When an overworked mother and her teenage daughter magically swap bodies, they have just one day to put things right again before mom’s big wedding. Freaky Friday, a new musical based on the beloved novel by Mary Rodgers and two hit Disney films, is a hilarious, contemporary update of an American classic in which a mother and daughter really see what it is to be a family and experience each other’s lives first-hand, if only for a day.

Set in the present day, Freaky Friday features a tuneful pop-rock score, fittingly for a work that has effortlessly updated throughout its several iterations.  The novel (1972), the first film starring Barbara Harris and Jodie Foster (1976), the second film starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan (2003) and this new stage musical are all set in their respective present day.

Freaky Friday was developed by Disney Theatrical Productions expressly for licensing via partner Musical Theatre International first to professional and then amateur theatres, with productions taking place at La Jolla Playhouse, Cleveland Play House and the Alley Theatre this year. It follows the trajectory of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, which is now available to professional theatres worldwide following acclaimed engagements at La Jolla Playhouse and Paper Mill Playhouse.
