Morimoto Asia Opens At Disney Springs

To the pounding rhythms of Japanese drums and the ceremonial breaking of the sake barrel, Morimoto Asia – the first-ever collaboration between Patina Restaurant Group and Japanese master chef Masaharu Morimoto — opened to a media preview Tuesday at Disney Springs, a reimagined shopping-dining-entertainment district at The Walt Disney World® Resort. The event featured culinary displays from Iron Chef Morimoto that included breaking down a 100lb Hawaiian big eye tuna that was used as part of a 60-foot long maki roll. Chef Morimoto received help from several of the event’s guests in making the sushi roll, including a very special guest, Mickey Mouse.

In onstage ceremonies Tuesday night, Chef Morimoto and Patina Restaurant Group CEO Nick Valenti were joined by Walt Disney World Resort executives including George A. Kalogridis, President, Walt Disney World Resort; Maribeth Bisienere, Senior Vice President, Disney Springs; and Keith Bradford, Vice President, Disney Springs.

Morimoto Asia occupies The Landing, one of four neighborhoods in Disney Springs. Morimoto Asia opens to the public on Wednesday, Sept. 30 for dinner service at 5pm. Its menu features cuisine from across Asia, a first for Chef Morimoto.

“I believe that food has the power to bring people together and these are some of my favorite dishes from all over Asia,” said Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto. “My team and I are so excited to welcome everyone to Morimoto Asia!”

“We are committed to providing exceptional pan-Asian cuisine and an unmatched dining experience to the guests of Disney Springs,” Valenti said. “This opening marks our ninth restaurant with our partners at The Walt Disney Company, and we are thrilled to be here at the new Disney Springs.”

  • Apex by Sunglass Hut — A first-of-its-kind sunglass store that was built with the athlete in mind. This retail location showcases the industry’s best selection of sport performance and lifestyle eyewear including Oakley, Ray-Ban, and Under Armour. • The Art of Shaving — A boutique retail offering that sells high-end shaving supplies and related grooming products for the modern man. Founded by a husband and wife in a Manhattan apartment, The Art of Shaving has grown to a worldwide organization that is still nurtured by the founders’ talents and passion. • Sound Lion — A new retail concept that offers the latest technology in headphones, docking stations, wireless music players and other products. Before purchasing a product, guests can hang out at their Listening Bar and find which product works best for them.

  • Vivoli Gelateria — A family-run gelato shop, Vivoli Gelateria serves up gelato that is made with fresh, top-quality ingredients using the exact same recipes from the original shop in Italy. (The storefront at Disney Springs is the second for Vivoli, the first outside of Italy.) The artisans use local and seasonal products, with cocoa powder, hazelnut and pistachio imported from Italy. In addition to their signature gelato, Vivoli Gelateria also serves traditional Italian panini, biscotti, espresso and tarts.

While Disney Springs continues to grow at Walt Disney World Resort in the space once occupied by Downtown Disney, Disneyland Resort still remains home to a vibrant and popular Downtown Disney District in California.

Critical Wildlife Conservation and Research Projects Funded by AZA-Accredited Zoos and Aquariums

The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) today announced Conservation Grants Fund (CGF) grants totaling $370,269 to be awarded to 18 projects.

“AZA’s Conservation Grants Fund provides support to AZA members who are scientists, wildlife experts and educators working to expand our knowledge of wildlife biology, reproduction, welfare, health, and the threats animals face in their natural ranges, while also actively working in the field and with communities around the world to address these threats,” said AZA Senior Vice President of Conservation and Science, Dr. Debborah Luke. “As a result of their work, we are all better positioned to help ensure the future of threatened and endangered species.”

Established in 1984, the AZA Conservation Grants Fund is a competitive grants program that supports the cooperative conservation-related scientific and educational initiatives of AZA members and their partners. Major areas of funding for conservation and animal care are represented including research, field conservation, education and outreach, animal welfare, animal health and animal management. Many Conservation Grants Fund projects are collaborations among AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums and state, federal and international wildlife agencies, academia and other conservation organizations.

Since 1991, the CGF has provided almost $7 million to more than 375 projects worldwide. These funds are raised through private and corporate contributions, including the Disney Conservation Fund. Publications resulting from each year’s grant recipients are available on AZA’s website.

Anyone may support next year’s worthy conservation projects by donating online at http://www.aza.org.

After a competitive review of 79 applications, 18 projects were chosen to be funded for 2015. AZA congratulates the 2015 Conservation Grants Fund recipients (the source of funds is noted after the project title):

The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis to Launch Exhibit Inspired by Disney Junior’s Peabody Award-Winning Series “Doc McStuffins”

The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis will launch the first-ever museum exhibit based on Disney Junior’s Peabody Award-Winning series for kids 2-7, “Doc McStuffins.” The series depicts a young girl who aspires to be a doctor like her mom and runs a clinic for stuffed animals and toys in her backyard playhouse.

The exhibit will debut at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis (the world’s largest children’s museum) in August 2016 and then travel to other venues across the country through 2019.

Spotlighting Doc’s role as the health and wellness ambassador for young children, the experience will bring the magical storytelling of “Doc McStuffins” to life through hands-on activities for young children and their families that impart life-lessons about health and wellness. Through imaginative play and intergenerational learning, visitors will be transported to a world inspired by Doc’s backyard playhouse clinic; There, they will share the joy of bringing their favorite toys to life as they learn more about staying healthy, caring for others, while problem solving.

“Disney is a world-leader in family entertainment and it is our honor and privilege to work with them to create an extraordinary new exhibit that will encourage families to discuss the importance of health and wellness,” said Dr. Jeffrey H. Patchen, President and CEO, The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. “Our team of exhibit designers, developers, and interpreters are ecstatic about the opportunity to create fun and imaginative hands-on activities and experiences for families to share surrounding this important topic.”

“Our ‘Doc McStuffins’ stories and characters continue to resonate strongly with young viewers and their parents, providing girls and boys around the world a role model for compassion and good health. We are delighted to be working with The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, one of the premier children’s museums in the world, to create a one-of-a-kind museum experience for kids and families and to help extend the themes of the animated series,” said Nancy Kanter, Executive Vice President, Original Programming and General Manager, Disney Junior.

Interior Designer Hosts Meet & Greet with Disney Junior’s Choo Choo Soul Star to benefit the Stanford Ronald McDonald House “Where Hope Has a Home” Project

The star of Disney Junior’s popular music video show “Choo Choo Soul” will be in San Francisco on Monday, September 21 to meet tots and help families in need for the Ronald McDonald House. Genevieve Goings (you can listen to our interview with her in our archives clicking here), a Bay Area native, has been the star of Choo Choo Soul and voice of Disney Junior for ten years. San Francisco Interior Designer, Jaimie Belew (Goings’ best friend) has graciously donated her designs and materials for the “Where Hope Has a Home” Project; expanding the available rooms for families with ailing children.

The meet and greet will be held at DeSousa Hughes Fabric Showroom in San Francisco on Monday, September 21 at 5:30 pm. A $20 donation will include autographs, photos and a meet and greet with the Disney star. All proceeds benefit the designs of 2 brand new rooms in the Stanford Facility. Tickets can be purchased in advance, and donations can be made at: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/2260387

More about the Ronald McDonald House “Where Hope Has a Home” Project:

Drawing upon the inspiration and success of Ronald McDonald House in Long Island where the design community rallied to refresh the 28 year-old facility, the San Francisco Design Center is proud to embark on a major philanthropic initiative in 2015. The SFDC has partnered with Ronald McDonald House at Stanford to provide major interior design services for their new expansion.

Under the design leadership of co-chairs Elizabeth Martin of Martin Group, and Geoffrey De Sousa of Geoffrey De Sousa Design and co-principal of De Sousa Hughes, they are galvanizing 48 interior design firms to provide pro bono interior design services for the 52,000-square-foot expansion of the House. When the expansion is complete in December of 2015, it will be the largest Ronald McDonald House in the world, providing invaluable shelter, support and community to the families of critically ill children being treated at the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital on the Stanford campus. The children, who come from all over California, the United States, and around the world, arrive at Ronald McDonald House at Stanford with serious medical conditions. Many are treated for cancer; some are waiting for organ transplants. With their families, these young patients can stay for weeks – even months – at the House.
