Disney Cruise Line Introduces Star Wars Day at Sea on Select Disney Fantasy Sailings

In 2016, Disney Cruise Line guests can celebrate the legendary adventures and iconic characters from the Star Wars saga during a brand-new, day-long celebration aboard eight special sailings on the Disney Fantasy: Star Wars Day at Sea.

Marking the first official appearance of the heroes and villains of Star Wars aboard a Disney Cruise Line ship, Star Wars Day at Sea combines the power of the Force, the magic of Disney and the excitement of cruising for an out-of-this-galaxy experience unlike any other.

Occurring one day during each of eight Disney Fantasy sailings, Star Wars Day at Sea will transport guests to a galaxy far, far away — in the Western Caribbean. The event features a full day of Star Wars celebrations, including a deck party, meet-and-greets with favorite characters, Star Wars-themed youth activities, unique food and beverage offerings, and special merchandise.

Also featured will be exclusive at-sea screenings of the Star Wars films and the new Disney XD animated series, Star Wars Rebels.

Throughout the day, Star Wars Younglings, Padawans and Jedi Masters alike will enjoy the immersive entertainment. Intergalactic highlights include:

Force-filled Fun for Everyone

  • Darth Vader, Chewbacca, Boba Fett, Stormtroopers and other characters from across the Star Wars galaxy will be onboard for scheduled meet and greets, as well as roaming on deck and elsewhere around the ship. Guests also are encouraged to dress up in their own stellar costumes.
  • A shipboard version of the popular Jedi Training Academy experience invites young Jedi hopefuls – known as “Padawans” – to learn lightsaber moves from a Jedi Master. They can then use the Force and face off in a final test against the evil Darth Vader.
  • Kids and families enjoy friendly competition during Star Wars trivia games, covering fun facts from the film and television sagas.
  • For Younglings, Star Wars-themed arts and crafts, games and activities will be offered throughout the day in Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab youth clubs.
  • In the evening, adults entering the night club will feel like they stepped into the Mos Eisley cantina scene. Characters and cantina music set the mood as Star Wars-themed specialty cocktails are served.

Film Screenings and Celebrities

  • Guests can watch the first six Star Wars films and follow Darth Vader, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luke and Leia along their epic journey.
  • Also showing will be episodes of the new Disney XD animated series, Star Wars Rebels.
  • On each of the special sailings, celebrities and insiders from the Star Wars galaxy will share their experiences, meet fans and sign autographs.

Star Wars Deck Party and Fireworks

  • There’s intergalactic fun when the Star Wars deck party blasts off to an exciting evening filled with music, dancing and games.
  • Star Wars characters converge on the deck stage for a celebration of the Star Wars saga in a show featuring special effects and guest participation.
  • The deck party culminates in a spectacular display of themed pyrotechnics, lighting, sound effects, lasers and Star Wars music.

Star Wars Day at Sea will be on Disney Fantasy cruises sailing on Jan. 9, 23; Feb. 6, 20; March 5, 19; April 2 and 16, 2016. Departing from Port Canaveral, the seven-night Western Caribbean itinerary includes Cozumel, Mexico; Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands and Disney’s private island in the Bahamas, Castaway Cay.

NCMEC Teams with Disney Club Penguin to Make Kids Good Digital Citizens

Today, on Safer Internet Day, in collaboration with Disney Club Penguin, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children’s® NetSmartz® Workshop launched an online educator training program.  The new program, “Teaching Digital Citizenship,” aims to arm educators, law enforcement officers and others with the tools they need to teach Internet safety to children ages 5-17. The free training program is available online and focuses on good digital citizenship, both what it is and how to teach it.

“The distinction between online and offline means less to the next generation.  They are digital natives, who grew up online,” said John Ryan, NCMEC president and CEO. “When teaching kids to be ethical and safe, we cannot ignore the choices they are making on the Internet or through social media.  This training can help anyone involved with educating children understand the risks kids face online and how to empower them to be responsible digital citizens.”

National Center for Missing & Exploited Children's® NetSmartz® Workshop

National Center for Missing & Exploited Children’s® NetSmartz® Workshop

The training tackles issues like digital literacy, online privacy, online sexual solicitation, sexting and cyberbullying.  It was created by NCMEC based on the organization’s experience with online crimes against children and insight into the newest strategies in Internet safety education. It is self-paced and consists of a series of videos and quizzes that take about an hour to complete. The training educates the participant about the most prevalent Internet safety issues and resources they can use to teach children to avoid those issues. When finished, the program offers a certificate that teachers can use to apply for continuing education credits. The free training is available at www.NetSmartz.org/training.

Disney Club Penguin has worked with NCMEC on Internet safety efforts for the past five years.  Together they have reached communities around the nation to bring free safety education and resources to educators, law-enforcement officers, parents and children. As part of Club Penguin’s global ‘It Starts with You’ online safety campaign in 2014, they distributed over 16,000 materials to schools, libraries, nonprofit organizations and youth groups.

Exceptional Minds Video Tribute Captures Life Story of Author’s Journey into the World of Walt Disney to Reach Son with Autism

Life, Animated author Ron Suskind, left, talks with young animators Arielle Guthrie and Michael Yochim as well as instructor Jessica Jerome from Exceptional Minds about Disney, animation and life on the spectrum during the Semel Institute's Open Mind lecture on Tuesday.

Life, Animated author Ron Suskind, left, talks with young animators Arielle Guthrie and Michael Yochim as well as instructor Jessica Jerome from Exceptional Minds about Disney, animation and life on the spectrum during the Semel Institute’s Open Mind lecture on Tuesday.

It’s a familiar story for so many families living on the autism spectrum. A young boy is growing up strong and healthy until the age of three, when a storm appears. He becomes afraid, runs out into the night and crosses a bridge that collapses behind him, unable to make his way back home.

At the Semel Institute’s Open Mind lecture at UCLA Tuesday, a team of animators at Exceptional Minds vocational school for young adults with autism presented a short video based on the life story of bestselling author and guest speaker Ron Suskind, whose autistic son Owen found his way back home through a most unusual mediator: Disney movies.

Suskind is a Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist whose latest book Life, Animated chronicles his family’s journey into the world of Walt Disney in order to communicate with his son who has autism. During Tuesday’s Open Mind lecture series sponsored by UCLA’s Friends of the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior, he spoke of his life as a journalist who interviewed U.S. Presidents by day. By night, he was a father who tried to reach his non-verbal autistic son whose singular interest in Disney eventually provided a bridge between the two.

Minutes after viewing the short for the first time, Mr. Suskind spoke of his now-adult son Owen’s passion to bring back the art of original animation drawings similar to that used in the Disney movies of his youth, such as The Little Mermaid. “I want to thank these Exceptional Minds for that original animation,” said Suskind. “Owen will love it,” he added.

The Suskinds’ story was captured in a video tribute set to the music and theme of Lion King with original animation drawings arranged by a team of Exceptional Minds animators, led by program graduate Arielle Guthrie. The team included students Matthew De Lorimier, Mason Earwood, Syd Fox, Michael Yochim, Ezra Fields-Meyer and Andrew Turney, who are themselves on the autism spectrum and also hold a special affinity for animation in their own struggles with autism.

Exceptional Minds is the only vocational school of its kind preparing young men and women with autism for careers in digital animation, visual effects and similar careers in the movie industry. The school is known for its close working relationship with the movie industry. Exceptional Minds graduates and students have worked on major motion films such as Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, American Hustle and Lawless.

During Tuesday’s Open Mind lecture, Mr. Suskind was joined by UCLA Semel Institute scientists Dr. Daniel Geshwind and Dr. Shafuli Jeste. This presentation is part of The Friends of Semel’s Open Mind community lecture and film series that is open to the public at no charge on the UCLA campus. The programs bring together renowned authors, filmmakers, and scientists to present programs about mental health issues.

A Trip Back to the Liberty Tree Tavern, 1983 and The Little Patriots Menu at the Magic Kingdom

A Trip Back to the Liberty Tree Tavern, 1983 and The Little Patriots Menu at the Magic Kingdom

A Trip Back to the Liberty Tree Tavern, 1983 and The Little Patriots Menu at the Magic Kingdom

There are many kinds of Disney fans out there, from movies, Disney Channel, the parks and more. And with that many of us always try to grab those little things that help us remember our experience and trip to the park, from Park Maps, Plastic Bags, Napkins and even in some cases many other “park” items that are unique but actually souvenirs to purchase.

So I take you to the wonderful year of 1983 and the Magic Kingdom. That was a magical era for me since there were only two parks, and remember a small thing called The Disney Village? In looking back one of my favorite restaurants was, and still is, The Liberty Tree Tavern. There was always just something about it that took me to a pollyanna, swamp fox era in feeling.

At that time I was one of those Little Patriots. Chicken Strips, Ice Cream and all kinds of goodies. I do recall this one day in June where my family and I stopped in to eat (again before having to make silly ADRs so many months in advance back to a time when you could just go and eat) and I order some food and upon leaving the waitress walked past and I asked if I could have the Menu. I explained how I loved eating here and love The Magic Kingdom. She then proceeded to hand me one of the menus that I still have to this day in perfect condition and with the copyright 1983 stamped right on it.

How many of you remember this menu and those days of the Kingdom and Liberty Square?

Walt Disney Records The Legacy Collection Pinocchio Released Today: February 10, 2015

Walt Disney Records The Legacy Collection Pinocchio Released Today: February 10, 2015

Walt Disney Records The Legacy Collection Pinocchio Released Today: February 10, 2015

The sixth release from The Legacy Collection celebrates the 75th anniversary of “Pinocchio” with a 2-disc set, which includes the original restored motion picture soundtrack, 3 new Lost Chords recordings, plus bonus tracks, enchanting illustrations, original concept art and more.

“Pinocchio” was a groundbreaking achievement in the area of effects animation, giving realistic movement to vehicles, machinery and natural elements such as rain, lightning, snow, smoke, shadows and water.

The film was released to theaters on February 23, 1940. “Pinocchio” became the first animated feature to win a competitive Academy Award®, winning two for Best Music, Original Score and for Best Music, Original Song for “When You Wish Upon A Star.” The beloved ballad became an instantly recognizable cornerstone of Disney’s entertainment legacy. In 1994, “Pinocchio” was added to the United States National Film Registry as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”

Disc One of The Legacy Collection Pinocchio features the songs and score from the restored original motion picture soundtrack. The album’s extensive liner notes were written by Jim Fanning, an internationally published Disney historian, writer and editor, who has written for many divisions of The Walt Disney Company.

Disc Two features The Lost Chords of Pinocchio – 3 new recordings (“Rolling Along to Pleasure Island,” “No Strings,” and “As I Was Sayin’ to the Duchess”) brought to life the way they would have sounded in 1940. Disc Two also includes 5 bonus tracks performed by Jiminy Cricket (Cliff Edwards) from the original “Mickey Mouse Club.” Russell Schroeder provides an overview of The Lost Chords project as well as background on each song. Schroeder worked as an artist for The Walt Disney Company for 29 years. In addition to Disney’s Lost Chords Volumes 1 & 2, Russell authored several other books including Disney: The Ultimate Visual Guide, and Mickey Mouse: My Life In Pictures.

The CD cover and 24-page booklet feature newly created artwork inspired by “Pinocchio” from Lorelay Bove, a visual development artist at Walt Disney Animation Studios (“Tangled,” “Winnie the Pooh,” “Wreck-It Ralph”). The CD booklet also includes 12 pages of visual development art from the film, with notes by Dave Bossert, Producer/Creative Director at Walt Disney Animation Studios.

Walt Disney Records The Legacy Collection Pinocchio 2-disc set is available for pre-order at Amazon: http://smarturl.it/lcpama1 and at Disney Music Emporium: disneymusicemporium.com.  For more information on Disney Music Emporium, please visit, DisneyMusicEmporium.com become a fan at Facebook.com/disneymusicemporium or follow us at Twitter.com/DisneyMusicEmp.

Can Charlie Brown ever win the attention of his beloved Little Red-Haired Girl? Indeed he did on Saturday, January 31, when the Little Red-Haired Girl herself—aka Francesca Capaldi, the 10-year-old actress who plays the character in the upcoming Peanuts feature film—co-hosted a Peanuts-themed Valentine’s party with Snoopy and his sister Belle at the Park Hyatt Hotel in Carlsbad.

Capaldi, known to TV viewers as Chloe James on Disney’s Dog With a Blog, hosted dozens of her friends, including Skai Jackson (Jessie), Merit Leighton (A Tiger’s Tale), Marlow Peyton (Candybar) and Aubrey Miller (Spare Parts).

The party featured a yummy cake adorned with a special Belle DecoPac decoration on top

The party featured a yummy cake adorned with a special Belle DecoPac decoration on top

Guests tried on the latest Snoopy and his sister Belle fashions from Target, danced to DJ-provided tunes, and decorated cupcakes with DecoPac decorations. Of course, they also enjoyed watching the classic Peanuts special, Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown, set to air on ABC alongside A Charlie Brown Valentine on February 13th at 8pmEST/7pmCT.

“I was really excited to host this early Valentine’s party with Snoopy and his adorable sister Belle —it’s pretty much the best way to celebrate Valentine’s Day, ever!” says Capaldi. “My friends and I had a great time trying on clothes and making Valentine’s…and eating chocolate, of course!”

After the party fun, the happy guests went home with goodie bags filled with Peanuts treats, including Snoopy and Belle apparel from Target, DVDs of the movies from Warner Home Video, Be Awesome books from Running Press, Nestlé’s candy, and valentines from Galerie.

On November 6th, 2015, Capaldi co-stars as the voice of The Little Red-Haired Girl in The Peanuts Movie, as Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy, Linus and the rest of the beloved “Peanuts” gang make their big-screen debut, like they’ve never been seen before, in state of the art 3D animation. Snoopy, the world’s most lovable beagle – and flying ace – embarks upon his greatest mission as he takes to the skies to pursue his arch-nemesis The Red Baron, while his best pal, Charlie Brown, begins his own epic quest. From the imagination of Charles M. Schulz and the creators of the ICE AGE films, THE PEANUTS MOVIE will prove that every underdog has his day.

Ringling College Student Team Wins Disney Imagineering’s Imaginations Competition

Ringling College Student Team Wins Disney Imagineering’s Imaginations Competition

Ringling College Student Team Wins Disney Imagineering’s Imaginations Competition

The student team from Ringling College of Art and Design were announced as the first place winners of the 24th Walt Disney Imagineering Imaginations design competition during an awards luncheon at Imagineering headquarters in Glendale, California on Friday, January 30th. Imaginations is a design competition created and sponsored by Walt Disney Imagineering with the purpose of seeking out and nurturing the next generation of diverse Imagineers. Started in 1992, the program has grown to include a separate version sponsored by the Hong Kong Disneyland® Resort.

For this year’s Imaginations design competition, students from American universities and colleges were given the following challenge: Take what Disney does best today – from its world-class theme parks, resorts, cruise ships, and other entertainment venues that are globally highly popular with families – and apply it to transportation within a major city. The team’s Disney transportation experience should include station/stops and vehicle designs that reflect the diversity of the city, and are accessible, energy-friendly, and fun.

First place was awarded to Elizabeth Fox, Diana Han, John McDonald and Josh Newton of Ringling College of Art & Design. According to Fox, from Wesley Chapel, FL and majoring in Interior Design and minoring in Business of Art and Design (BOAD), “The experience of collaborating with different majors was one of the most exciting and rewarding parts of Imaginations. Each teammate came to the table with a completely different skill set that in the end, complemented each other very well and together we were able to create a diverse, well-rounded and ultimately winning project.” Team member John McDonald is a Computer Animation major from Massapequa, NY; Diana Han an Illustration major from Torrance, CA and Joshua Newton an Illustration major from Owensville, IN.

Their project, “The New Orleans Double Rail” is a symbol of hope for a city that’s greatest challenge is its location below sea level. The New Orleans Double Rail features two separate elevated trains to satisfy the needs for both commuters and tourists coming to explore the city in an entertaining and unique way. The main Jackson Square station is the central hub that engages the community and celebrates New Orleans’ local food, music and art. The Double Rail soars above the city, with the top train catering to the comfort of the daily commuter and the lower train that uses window projection systems to tell the story of the city of New Orleans by creating a magical and unforgettable sightseeing experience.

“We are very proud of the professionalism and creativity shown by the Ringling College team in designing such an innovative and imaginative transportation solution,” said Ringling College of Art and Design President Dr. Larry R. Thompson. “We value the time and effort Walt Disney Imagineering allocates to driving the Imaginations design competition and inspiring creativity in universities across our country. And to our Ringling College Imaginations student team — Elizabeth, Diana, John and Josh – we applaud your achievement.”

Twenty-one college students from six university teams were finalists in Walt Disney Imagineering’s 24th Imaginations design competition. Imaginations is one of the creative ways that Imagineering uses to search for the next generation of talented theme park designers. The top three placed teams were awarded cash prizes, with the first place team receiving $3,000. An additional $1,000 grant was awarded to the first place team, to be equally divided among its sponsoring universities.

The six teams of finalists visited Walt Disney Imagineering in Glendale from January 26 to 30 to make professional presentations to the judging panel, meet and network with Imagineers, go behind the scenes where Disney magic is created, and interview for paid internships during their visit.

A panel of Imagineering judges applies the same criteria to the entries as they would to their own work that includes the team’s ability to collaborate across different disciplines and backgrounds; the mastery of their individual skills; whether the project provides an engaging Guest experience; a good understanding of the local and tourist market in the chosen location; the ability to tell a compelling and engaging story; and knowledge and passion for the Disney brand and Walt Disney Imagineering. Additionally, the project should be unique in that it is not limited to what Guests already experience at Disney parks and resorts.

The competition is open to students from colleges and universities in the United States who are juniors, seniors or full-time graduate students; or graduated no earlier than May of this year, and enrolled in courses in Architecture, Animation, Communications, Computer Science, Construction/ Project Management, Creative Writing/ Screenwriting/Playwriting, Design, Engineering, Fine Arts, Game Design and/or Development, Graphic/ Communications Design, Illustration, Industrial Design, Interactive Media Design, Interior Design, Landscape Architecture, Media Production (Digital, TV, Film), Theater Design and Production, and Visual Arts.

Second place was awarded to the team from Art Center College of Design for “The Wunderkinds,” a journey through Zurich highlighting the intricacy and integrity of Swiss craftsmanship. Highlighting Switzerland’s most famous products: chocolate, the Alps, and timepieces, the team found that these shared a sense of joy, adventure, and imagination, encompassed by the feeling of “wonder” as the true heart of mastery of these crafts. “Wonder” is the theme – and thus the Wunderkinds were born. The four students on the team are Susey Chang, Waiji Choo, Katherine Park and Josephine Tsao.

Third place was awarded to the team from Drexel University for their “Woollahra” which connects the districts of Liverpool, Hornsby and Sutherland to a main station in the central business district of Sydney, Australia. Also an interactive experience, Woollahra unites Sydney, both geographically and spiritually, using the campfire, a long held place of storytelling and culture, to gather people to share traditions from the past, stories of the lives and vision of what is to come. The four members of the team are Bader Al Moulah, Ahmad Jamal, Justin Petronglo and John VanZelst.

Walt Disney Imagineering is the unique innovative organization that creates – from concept through construction – all Disney theme parks, resorts, attractions, cruise ships, real estate developments, and regional entertainment venues worldwide. The name Imagineering combines imagination with engineering. https://disneyimaginations.com/
