Disneyland Resort Shows a Spooky Disney Side for Halloween Time!

Halloween Time at the Disneyland Resort is a one-of-a-kind celebration of chilling, family friendly fun. From Friday, Sept. 12, through Friday, Oct. 31, guests will explore their spooky Disney Side with special Halloweentransformations of Haunted Mansion and Space Mountain; encounter Disney villains conjured by a magic cauldron; dance to the Mad T Party band and meet Mickey Mouse and his friends in Halloween costumes.

An additional Halloween Time highlight is the separate-ticket, after-hours Mickey’s Halloween Party, where adults and children show their Disney Side by dressing in costumes, trick-or-treating at Disneyland Park and enjoying an array of special entertainment, including the exclusive “Halloween Screams” fireworks spectacular.

New to Halloween Time at Disneyland this year are the latest twists at Haunted Mansion Holiday and additional entertainment experiences at the Halloween Carnival at Big Thunder Ranch, with more mysterious fun joining the Astounding Cauldron of Magic.

Spooky Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy in Tomorrowland is one of the guest favorites during Halloween Time. The unique Halloween-themed experience begins as a typical Space Mountain adventure, but suddenly launches voyagers into a haunted section of the universe. Ghosts appear out of the starry darkness and swirling galaxies of Space Mountain, reaching out as if to grab guests as they speed through space. The exhilarating drops and curves are punctuated by piercing screams, creepy sound effects and haunting music.

Jack Skellington returns to Disneyland to take over the Haunted Mansion and brings Haunted Mansion Holiday back to New Orleans Square. Transformed with a mix of Halloween spookiness and Christmas cheer, Haunted Mansion Holiday is inspired by the classic animated film “Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas.”

Guests find new surprises within the Mansion every Halloween, including the 2014 Haunted Mansion Holiday gingerbread house. This year’s creepy creation adds a little whimsy with a hapless gingerbread zombie who is trapped inside – surrounded by frightening spikes that are very sharp, red-and-white candy canes. This is the 14th original gingerbread design since Haunted Mansion Holiday debuted in 2001. The design also features opening and closing doors and special lights.

In addition to Haunted Mansion Holiday and Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy:

  • In Frontierland, guests discover an exciting, new magic show presented on the Halloween Carnival stage at Big Thunder Ranch. Nearby they also may conjure up a Disney Villain at the “Astounding Cauldron of Magic” sideshow tent at the Halloween Carnival.
  • Also at the Halloween Carnival in Big Thunder Ranch, guests encounter favorite Disney characters in Halloween costumes, pumpkin carvers showing their Disney Side with elaborate creations, Halloween decor and activities for youngsters.
  • Main Street, U.S.A. in Disneyland transforms to become the Pumpkin Festival, with hundreds of pumpkins on display, no two of them the same.
  • Guests age three and up show their Disney Side and live their pirate dreams as they learn the ways of the seven seas at The Pirates League. A part of the Halloween Carnival, The Pirates League offers a variety of pirate transformation options: Jake and the Never Land Pirates, Captain Hook, Ghosted Pirate, Black Beard, Black Eyed Jack, and Empress, created especially for pirate princesses. For The Pirates League reservations call 714-781-STYLE / 714-781-7895.
  • Frontierland observes Dia de los Muertos with a traditional skeleton display that will remain through Sunday, Nov. 2.

In Disney California Adventure Park, Halloween Time offers frightful fun for guests of all ages, with favorite attractions such as The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, where a “supernatural” event happened on Halloween evening 1939, 75 years ago, forever haunting the building with spine-tingling fun. Also at Disney California Adventure, the nighttime Mad T Party in Hollywood Land gets some newHalloween spice. Tweedledee and Tweedledum welcome guests as the Mad Hatter offers some devilishly delicious All Hallows Eve fun featuring new Halloween music and a chilling new look for Mad T Party band.

Mickey’s Halloween Party, a separate-ticket event* for trick-or-treating families, expands to  14 special, spooky nights in Disneyland. Highlights of Mickey’s Halloween Party include:

  • “Villains Square.” Throughout the evening, the Disney villains arrive in Disneyland Town Square as the “Bad Apple Party Crashers,” riding a black horse-drawn carriage accompanied by thunder, fog and special lighting effects. Villains such as Cruella De Vil, the Queen of Hearts, Judge Frollo from “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” and Lady Tremaine from “Cinderella” appear for photos and character greetings, and guests are invited to “Party Like a Villain.”
  • The opportunity to play in Disneyland for three hours before the party starts
  • Trick or Treating – candy and healthy treats – in the ultimate Disney neighborhood
  • The Halloween Screams” fireworks spectacular, hosted by “Master of Scare-omonies” Jack Skellington (presented exclusively for guests of Mickey’s Halloween Party, weather permitting)
  • “Mickey’s Costume Party” cavalcade featuring some favorite characters, performed twice nightly
  • “Monsters U Dance Party” at Tomorrowland Terrace: Class time is over and the students of Monsters University join HalloweenTime guests in a family-friendly frat party with the most popular students from Monsters U, Mike & Sulley.
  • The Cadaver Dans, a ghoulish quartet performing Halloween-themed tunes aboard a drifting graveyard-themed raft on the Rivers of America in New Orleans Square and Frontierland
  • Photo locations with popular Disney and Pixar Pals, plus Disney Villains
  • Nearly all the favorite Disneyland rides and attractions, plus Haunted Mansion Holiday and Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy

John Denver’s Recording Career Celebrated on New Box Set, ALL OF MY MEMORIES: THE JOHN DENVER COLLECTION

John Denver‘s prolific recording career is paid high tribute on ALL OF MY MEMORIES: THE JOHN DENVER COLLECTION.  This deluxe 90-song, 4-CD box set, representing virtually every one of the studio and live albums he recorded in his lifetime, encompasses hit singles and signature album tracks, demos, promotional rarities, limited edition and private pressings, and a total of six previously unreleased tracks.  The first truly comprehensive overview of his more than three decades of recording, from 1964 (before his solo career took off) to 1997 (the year of his death), this box set will be available everywhere November 4th through RCA/Legacy Recordings, a division of Sony Music Entertainment.  ALL OF MY MEMORIES is available now for pre-order on Amazon.

John Denver and Kermit were always great friends.

John Denver and Kermit were always great friends.

From his start as an itinerant folk-singer in the mid-1960s, John Denver rose to world class status as a multi-platinum selling recording artist and producer, a two-time Grammy Award®-winner (and five-time host of the Grammy Awards® broadcast), movie actor, television personality, philanthropist, environmental and human rights activist, and much more.

John Denver is recognized as one of the most celebrated entertainers of the 1970s, with sales over 33 million to date, including eightBillboard Top 10 RCA Albums in the U.S. (three of which hit #1).  These include seven RIAA multi-platinum, thirteen platinum and 20 gold album certifications.  He charted more than 40 Billboard Hot 100, AC and Country songs from 1971 to 1988.  His #1 hits from 1974-’76 included “Sunshine On My Shoulders,” “Annie’s Song,” “Back Home Again,” “Sweet Surrender,” “Thank God I’m A Country Boy” (a rare live record to top the chart), “Calypso” (a monument to his close association with undersea explorer Jacques Cousteau), “Fly Away” featuring Olivia Newton-John, “Looking For Space,” and “Like A Sad Song.”  These and his ‘campfire’ standards, “Leaving On A Jet Plane,” “Take Me Home, Country Roads” (designated in 2014 as the state song of West Virginia), and “Rocky Mountain High” (designated in 2007 as one of two state songs of Colorado) – not to mention his numerous recordings, movies and television appearances with Jim Henson’s Muppets – comprise a body of work that will resonate forever.

In addition to recapping hit singles, signature album tracks, live performances, folk boom rarities, private pressings tracks, and promotional-only tracks, ALL OF MY MEMORIES also uncovered six previously unissued treasures:

  • Cover versions of “The Road” and “Far Side Of The Hill,” both demos recorded for Capitol Records in Hollywood, 1964, prior to joining the Mitchell Trio;
  • “Rhymes And Reasons,” an original composition cut in early ’69 for Reprise Records, re-done later as the title track of Denver’s RCA debut LP in late-’69;
  • “Spirit,” first recorded on his 1975 Windsong LP, this version later recorded live at the Sydney Opera House in 1977, but not included on the 1999 concert album release;
  • An alternate take of “Eli’s Song” from 1976, with the prophetic lyric, “See the airplane fly, see the trees rush by/ Be brave and strong when you hurt yourself/ Don’t you have a worry in the world…”; and
  • A different version of the evergreen, “It’s A Sin To Tell A Lie,” 1973, whose 1955 hit by Somethin’ Smith And The Redheads was Denver’s mother’s favorite tune, and was famously sung by him on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in 1972.
The John Denver Collection

The John Denver Collection

An accomplished songwriter, John Denver received the Carl Sandburg People’s Poet Award in 1982, and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame in 1996.  As a writer’s writer, he appreciated a great song, as ALL OF MY MEMORIES shows.  The box set features compositions by Bill Danoff & Taffy Nivert (who co-wrote “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” “I Guess He’d Rather Be In Colorado” and others), Buddy Holly (“Everyday”), John Prine (“Blow Up Your TV (Spanish Pipe Dream)”), Joe Henry, and others of note.

John Denver would have turned 70 on December 31, 2013. In November 2013, the BBC Four documentary, John Denver: Country Boy, premiered in recognition of his 70th.  The one-hour film featured interviews with many important figures who knew Denver best, including his widow Annie Denver, producer Milton Okun, manager Jerry Weintraub, musicians James Burton and Paul Prestopino, and many others.  The 32-page booklet for ALL OF MY MEMORIES will include the definitive 2,600-word liner notes essay written by long-time John Denver chronicler G. Brown, former Denver Post music critic, and now Director at the Colorado Music Hall of Fame.  Its first inductee was John Denver, in 2011.

Industry legend Milton Okun ‘discovered’ Denver and was his long-time producer (and executive producer) on some 20-plus studio, live and ‘hits’ albums from 1965 (as the Mitchell Trio’s producer) up until 1986.  As Okun said in the BBC documentary, “He came to New York to audition, and it was very clear right away that he was the best.”  Okun brought Denver’s “Leaving, On A Jet Plane” to Peter, Paul & Mary (whom he was also producing) for their second ‘folk-rock’ LP, Album 1700, and the song became PP&M’s one and only #1 career hit.  “He represented America at its best and healthiest,” Okun said of Denver, “and was a wonderful artist and a wonderful writer, and I think his songs will be sung for hundreds of years. They’re that good.”

The release of ALL OF MY MEMORIES: THE JOHN DENVER COLLECTION builds on the momentum of a resurgence in his popularity that began in 2007, the tenth anniversary year of his death, when the Colorado Senate named “Rocky Mountain High” as one of its two official state songs.  Several commemorative multi-CD and DVD concert packages were issued by his family over the next two years.  In April 2011, the all-star John Denver Earth Day Celebration Concert sold out at 1STBANK Center; and February 2013marked the opening of the 15-city John Denver: A Rocky Mountain High Concert” tour, in which for the first time in 15 years, he was seen on giant video screens, performing hit songs spanning his career, backed by live musicians.  The music was presented along with stories of life on the road with the artist, as told by old friends and fellow performers.

John Denver & The Muppets Loved Working Together

Interest soared when The Music Is You: A Tribute to John Denver (ATO Records) debuted in the Top 50 on Soundscan in April 2013.  A diverse group of contributing artists ranged from Dave Matthews to Train, to Lucinda WilliamsAmos Lee, Old Crow Medicine Show, and many more.  Highlights included My Morning Jacket’s opening take of “Leaving On A Jet Plane,” and a special duet by Brandi Carlile and Emmylou Harris on “Take Me Home, Country Roads.”

Indeed, John Denver’s passions extended far beyond the music.  Throughout his career, he imparted strong messages in his work and used his celebrity to champion important causes. Songs like “I Want to Live” and “Let Us Begin (What Are We Making Weapons For)” served as rallying themes to stand up and solve problems like world hunger and nuclear disarmament. He backed up his convictions with action, co-founding both the Hunger Project charity and the Windstar Foundation to raise awareness for those suffering from starvation and to educate people on conservation efforts, two causes closest to his heart.

In his liner notes for ALL OF MY MEMORIES, G. Brown evokes the memory of fellow singer-songwriter (and folk boom survivor) John Stewart, who told a British journalist in 1971 about his friend: “Watch John Denver.  He’s a genius.  He’ll defeat all the cynicism in the world because he’s so real.  You don’t have to think too much about him—just lie back and let his sunshine wash all over you.  And you know you’ll feel real.”

“Alexander And The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” Soundtrack Available In The U.S. October 7

“Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” hits theaters Oct. 10, 2014, with a soundtrack that includes an original end-credit song from The Vamps, plus original songs from two of the film’s stars and score by Christophe Beck (“Frozen,” “The Hangover”). The six-song EP will be released in the U.S. by Walt Disney Records on Oct. 7, 2014; pre-order begins today.

British pop rock band The Vamps was called on to write and perform the end-credit song “Hurricane.” The group filmed a music video for the song that features a cameo by Bella Thorne, who stars as big brother Anthony’s uptight girlfriend Celia in the film. A sneak peek of the video will debut on Disney Channel Sept. 12, 2014, followed by the full video premiere on VEVO. Director Miguel Arteta (“The Good Girl,” “Cedar Rapids,” “Youth in Revolt”) says it was The Vamps’ optimism that drew him to the group. “We wanted people to know that it’s okay to have bad days—you can be stronger and better for it,” says Arteta. “The Vamps’ energy gets that across wonderfully!”

According to the director, Beck’s score sets the pace for the film. “Chris Beck loved the honesty in the film with regard to what it’s like to raise a family and how hectic that can get at times,” says Arteta. “He added a genuine life beat to the whole film. When the troubles for the family start, you can almost hear Chris’ score going ‘Oh noooo!’ It feels like honest mayhem in an incredibly fun way.”

Dylan Minnette, who plays Anthony in the film, teamed up with Braeden Lemasters to write the song “Surf Surf Don’t Drown,” which is performed by Minnette’s band The Narwhals and appears in the film as the family rushes to get sister Emily to her play. “I love The Narwhals and ‘Surf Surf Don’t Drown’ was the perfect message for our film,” says Arteta. “When the world throws a tsunami of bad luck your way, it’s best to go with the energy and try to rise above it.”

Kerris Dorsey gained recognition in “Moneyball” for her performance of the acoustic song “The Show” in that film. Dorsey, who portrays big sister Emily in “Alexander,” wrote and performed the song “Best Worst Day Ever” along with her sister Justine Dorsey. The song can be heard during the credits. “I love Kerris and Justine’s voices,” says Arteta. “I heard them play together and knew it would be fantastic to have them on the soundtrack. I’m so impressed with the song they wrote. It has such a feeling of being able to beat the bad odds that life hands you.”

“When you are having a bad day, you can feel singled out, as if fate has brought a huge hand down and pointed its finger at you at all day,” continues Arteta. “Wherever you look up, there it is, singling you out. We wanted the music in Alexander to have this incessant feeling to it—like this madcap pulse has gotten a hold of you and won’t let up until the family beats the odds and has the wonderful party for Alexander in the end!”

Red Cross and Disney Honor National Preparedness Month: Arming Kids and Families with New Resources to Prepare for Disasters

The American Red Cross

The American Red Cross

The American Red Cross and Disney today unveiled a new disaster preparedness video, featuring Disney Channel star Cameron Boyce, to help teach kids and families the importance of preparing for natural disasters and other emergencies. The spot will run on Disney Channel as part of National Preparedness Month in September.

“When a disaster strikes, it is critical that the entire family is prepared,” said Gail McGovern, president and CEO of the American Red Cross. “Disney’s continued support helps us keep children safe by educating them about the importance of preparedness in ways that are relevant and fun.”

Disney Friends for Change – a global initiative that inspires kids and families to take action and make a difference in their communities – will spotlight the video on its website to show children simple ways to prepare for disasters. The spot will also air on the Disney Channel.

The spot features Boyce, who stars as Luke Ross on the Disney Channel series “Jessie,” and his friends as they discuss the basics of emergency preparedness: Learn, Practice, Share, Be Prepared. They portray preparing for emergencies as an activity that is easy, fun and as a way to help reduce children’s anxieties about the unexpected.

The video is one of several collaborative efforts between Disney and the Red Cross. The organizations  worked together to develop theMickey and Friends Disaster Preparedness Activity Bookwhich helps children and families learn how to prepare for disasters through a series of interactive games and activities. The book is available to download in English and Spanish.

Disney also contributed to the creation and expansion of The Pillowcase Project through a total investment of $3 million since 2012. The program supports in-school and after-school curriculum to help 3rd to 5th graders and their families prepare for disasters. Trained instructors teach youth the safety actions for various disasters, how to develop a family emergency plan and how to create emergency kits by packing essential items into a pillowcase for easy transport – a technique Boyce uses in the spot.

As part of its commitment to youth preparedness, Disney is also funding the development of a new mobile app for youth that will enable the Red Cross to expand the reach of The Pillowcase Project beyond the classroom. The app will be available on IOS and Android by early November.

Disney also helps the Red Cross during disaster relief operations by contributing hundreds of hours of volunteer service through the Disney VoluntEARS program and donating Mickey Mouse plush dolls to comfort children in the aftermath of disasters.

As a member of the Annual Disaster Giving Program (ADGP), Disney helps ensure the Red Cross is able to respond immediately after disasters at home and around the world.
