Disney’s “Muppets Most Wanted” Hitch A Ride With Toyota For A Super Bowl First

January 31, 2014 Disney News No Comments
The Muppets On the Toyota Commercial Set

The Muppets On the Toyota Commercial Set

The Muppets gang and Toyota will take a ride into history this year, connecting with Latinos across the country for the upcoming Toyota Highlander launch and the Muppets’ all-new big-screen adventure “Muppets Most Wanted,” in theaters March 21, 2014. The team will appear in two 30-second television commercials for the all-new 2014 Toyota Highlander that will debut on Fox Sports Deportes during the historic first Spanish-language broadcast of the Super Bowl on Sunday, February 2.

In each of the spots, dancing, singing and fun-loving Muppets show that with room for up to eight human passengers, or over a dozen Muppets, the Toyota Highlander has plenty of room for everything—everything except boring.

“Toyota is thrilled to take part in a defining moment in U.S. sports history,” said Jack Hollis, Vice President of Toyota Division Marketing at Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc.

“Connecting with Hispanic consumers has been a longstanding priority for Toyota. Engaging them in-language, in-culture and with such iconic characters on such a grand stage is very exciting.” Both commercials will debut and air twice during the second quarter of the game.

In addition to the television spots, Toyota will publish real-time Spanish-language content featuring the Muppets during the big game through Toyota’s Latino-specific Vine, Twitter and Facebook properties.

Hispanic influencers will also be part of the mix through their own channels to add an additional layer of real-time conversation.

Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Celebrates 55th Anniversary

by: D-Team Caitlin

Walt Disney's Classic Sleeping Beauty

Walt Disney’s Classic Sleeping Beauty

On this day in 1959, Sleeping Beauty premiered, introducing the world to lovely Aurora, debonair Prince Phillip, and one of animation’s most menacing villains, Maleficent. Set to the music of Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty ballet, the film has a unique tone. The music, in combination with the art design of Eyvind Earle, gave Sleeping Beauty a feel unlike any other Disney production.

Boasting many of Walt’s “nine old men” as animators, the characters of Sleeping Beauty are timeless, not to mention the cast who brought them to life. From Mary Costa’s lilting Aurora to Eleanor Audley’s sinister Maleficent, they are the perfect antitheses. We can only hope Elle Fanning and Angelina Jolie can capture a similar magic in this summer’s Maleficent.

In anticipation of Maleficent, which tells a previously untold side of Sleeping Beauty’s story, listen to Lana Del Ray’s recent cover of Once Upon a Dream.

Disenchanted? Walt’s Words May be the Key to Motivation

January 28, 2014 Walt Disney 2 Comments
Walt: A Dreamer, A Doer

Walt: A Dreamer, A Doer

“Never get bored or cynical. Yesterday is a thing of the past.”
-Walt Disney

We often wake up like Cinderella, sighing, “It’s time to start another day…” It’s incredibly easy to become disenchanted with every day work, which leads to a few important questions.

How can we avoid burnout? How can we use our imaginations to stay motivated? Walt’s words may be the key.

1. “Stop talking and begin doing.”

If you have an idea, write it down, and make it happen. If you dream of baking the perfect crème brule or learning to sew, what’s stopping you from trying? You never know what the creative process will bring. Your crème brule could taste awful, but it could just as easily become a cherished family recipe.  You may not be able to successfully sew a dress, but at least you’ll be able to fix that tear in your spouse’s pants. You thought creatively, and whether or not your endeavor was “successful,” you have something to show for it. Throwing your heart and soul into something is never a waste of time.  Act on your ideas and you will never get bored.

2. “There is more treasure in books than in all the pirate’s loot on Treasure Island.”

Read something to better yourself.  Here are a few recommendations:

If you’re interested in Creativity: The Imagineering Workout or Brainstorm: Unleashing Your Creative Self by Don Hahn (producer of Beauty and the Beast & The Lion King)

If you’re interested in Leadership: Creating Magic: 10 Common Sense Leadership Strategies from a Life at Disney

If you’re interested in The Walt Disney Company: Be Our Guest: Perfecting the Art of Customer Service

If you’re interested in People: Walt Disney: The Triumph of the American Imagination or Moose: Chapters from My Life by Robert B. Sherman (of the songwriting duo, The Sherman Brothers)

3. “When you’re curious, you find lots of interesting things to do.”

Let your inner Alice reign, and go somewhere you’ve never been before. Whether it’s a new restaurant, museum, coffee shop, or concert, you never know what you’ll find. Walt once said, “Around here we don’t look backward for very long. We are always moving forward and opening up new doors, because we’re curious, and our curiosity keeps taking us down new paths.” Dig a little deeper, and take a chance.

“Yesterday is a thing of the past.” Spend today getting excited about something.

Songwriting with Walt: Behind-the-Scenes of Disney Classics in ‘Moose’

"Moose: Chapters From My Life" by: Robert B. Sherman

“Moose: Chapters From My Life” by: Robert B. Sherman

The new movie “Saving Mr. Banks,” is a critically acclaimed look at the behind-the-scenes story of the creation of the timeless Disney childhood movie, “Mary Poppins.”

This new movie is shining the spotlight on the Sherman brothers, the songwriting duo behind the score of “Mary Poppins” as well as several other timeless works including, “The Jungle Book,” “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,” and “It’s a Small World (After All).”

Robert B. Sherman brings his true story to light in his autobiography, “Moose: Chapters From My Life.” Sherman holds nothing back in the candid book, from the horrors he saw as a frontline liberator in World War II to his successful career alongside Walt Disney in the 1960s and beyond.

DizRadio had the pleasure of meeting Robert in 2000 (Click here to see)

After Sherman’s death in 2012, his son, Robert J. Sherman, finished editing his father’s final words with the certainty they would inspire the same passion as his songs have for more than 40 years.

“I grew up immersed in the magic and creativity of my father’s bohemian world,” said Sherman, who is following his father’s footsteps as a successful songwriter. “This book gives readers the sincere, complete picture of the man who wrote the soundtrack to our childhoods.”

“Moose” is a collection of 54 chapters divided into seven sections. The different sections cover various parts of Sherman’s life, including his experience as one of the first liberators of the Dachau concentration camp and his triumphs working with Walt Disney in the last years of Disney’s life.

Girl Meets World Picked Up For a Full Season (image courtesy eonline.com)

“When you’re not a little boy anymore, when the world has taught you how to be this man…you know, you’re still gonna make mistakes; but your family and your friends that you’ve made along the way are gonna help you, OK? Even though it’ll seem like the world is going out of its way to teach you these hard lessons, you’re gonna realize, that it’s the same world that’s given you your family and your friends.” –Cory Matthews

It’s been almost 14 years since the television world bid Cory and Topanga farewell, but later this year, they will make a long-awaited return to the small screen.  We’ll have the pleasure of witnessing their parenting escapades in the Disney Channel sitcom sequel, Girl Meets World.

Disney has officially ordered eight more episodes, expanding the series to a full season (for a total of 21). We can’t wait to see where the world takes Cory and Topanga’s daughter and star of the show, Riley Matthews, when the series premieres. For occasional behind the scenes looks at production, follow the freshly launched twitter account, @GMWWriters, from the Girl Meets World writers’ room.

Five Songs to Keep You Motivated Today

by: D-Team Caitlin

Go The Distance! (photo courtesy: http://disney.wikia.com)

Go The Distance! (photo courtesy: http://disney.wikia.com)

“Everybody has problems. Everybody has bad times. Do we sacrifice all of the good times because of them? No…” -Phoebe Banks from Enchanted

1. “When Will My Life Begin?” from Tangled

Rapunzel can get more accomplished in a day than some of us could in a lifetime. Sometimes, all it takes is trying something new to gain a fresh perspective and spark your motivation. As Walt said, “We’re curious, and our curiosity keeps taking us down new paths.” If Rapunzel hadn’t embraced her curiosity, she may have never left her tower and started her new dream with Flynn. Get curious, and try something new today.

2. “Go the Distance” from Hercules

Alan Menken and David Zeppil’s, “Go the Distance”, is arguably one of the most underrated Disney power ballads of the 90s. This song is not only relatable; it’s powerful in every sense of the word. From the full orchestration to the incredible vocals by Roger Bart, this song sweeps you straight to the top of the world. Chills are mandatory from 1:14 to 1:18. Tears, optional.

3. “Fortuosity” from The Happiest Millionaire

This Sherman Brothers’ toe-tapper is the epitome of Main Street, U.S.A. The last live action film that Walt was involved in tells the story of an Irish immigrant, John Lawless, who becomes the beloved butler of one of Philadelphia’s most eccentric millionaires. The song, performed by Tommy Steele, says it all. “Just do your best, and leave the rest to fortuosity.”

4. “Whistle While You Work” from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

This tune has been inspiring many a diamond miner ever since Snow White premiered in December of 1937. But, “what if I can’t whistle?” you might be thinking. Well, you’ve got some options. If you’re lucky enough to have an office, try humming a merry tune. For those of us cubicle dwellers, think of a happy song and do a little dance when no one’s watching. The thrill will at least elicit a smile.

5. “Just Around the Riverbend” from Pocahontas

Pocahontas’ sense of adventure and confidence are something everyone should strive for. Even when faced with tough choices like, “Should I marry Kocoum?” she doesn’t lose hope. She embraces life’s challenges and has faith that if she follows her heart, it won’t lead her astray. None of us know what’s just around the riverbend, but isn’t that exciting? Let that excitement motivate you today.
