Award-winning composer Mark Mancina, who won a Grammy® for Best Soundtrack Album (with Phil Collins) for his work on Disney’s 1999 feature “Tarzan,” produced and composed the score for “Disney’s Planes.” Reflecting the diverse characters and global setting featured in the story, the Planes soundtrack takes offAugust 6th.

“All of the themes are based on the background and location of the characters,” says Mancina.

“Dusty is our middle-America character. Skipper is the old-school military hero. Ripslinger is too cool for school.”

Mancina created the themes utilizing a wide range of instrumentation—a full orchestra, rock band and mariachi band, plus samba, Indian music and heavy metal. The composer also employed a full men’s choir. “Of course, we have multinational music as well—British, Indian, Mexican—to name a few.”

Mancina says the climactic conclusion of the film features nine minutes of intense musical storytelling that proved challenging, but helped filmmakers showcase the emotional finale of Dusty’s lofty endeavor.

Mark Mancina’s film scores traverse almost every genre: drama, action, comedy, suspense, and period epic. His honors include three Grammys® (1999’s Best Soundtrack Album/Tarzan, 1998’s Best Musical Show Album/The Lion King, 1994’s Best Musical Album for Children/The Lion King Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), an American Music Award, Britain’s Ivor Novello Award and a Tony® nomination.  Recent career highlights include scores for “August Rush,” “Camille,” “Shooter,” plus co-scoring the CBS primetime drama “Criminal Minds” and co-composing the new Walt Disney Pictures logo.

“Disney’s Planes” also features original songs, including “Nothing Can Stop Me Now,” written and performed by Mark Holman; the song itself is used as a background vocal, and the reprise is used as the first end credit vocal. “You Don’t Stop-NYC” is written by Ali “Dee” Theodore and performed by Chris Classic and Alana D. “Fly” is written by Jon Stevens and John Fields and performed by Jon Stevens of The Dead Daisies.

Rumor: The End of Imagination

The rumor mill for Walt Disney World is always buzzing.  Mostly its wishful thinking.  But sometimes the people whispering are on the money.

Currently there is a rumor going around that the Imagination Pavilion at EPCOT is going to be taken down soon.

The Imagination Pavilion is the home of Figment.  It has hosted several attractions including Magic Journeys and two versions of Journey Into Imagination. (You can hear our interview with the Dreamfinder on Show #38) From 1994 to 2009, the building housed Honey I Shrunk the Audience!, a 3-d show based on the Honey I Shrunk the Kids movies.  Then following Michael Jackson’s death in 2009, Disney brought back Captain EO, the 3D show he starred in that previously was shown in the pavilion.

Personally I loved Honey I Shrunk the Audience!, though I understand why they got rid of it.  Those movies are old now, and many people barely remember them, while some of the younger guests have never even heard of them.  I also like the new version of Journey Into Imagination, but mainly because I’m an Eric Idle fan.  Maybe it is time for something new in that location.

Part of the rumor is that there will be some sort of Phineas and Ferb ride or attraction.  That would be amazing!  Phineas and Ferb is to this generation what the Muppet Babies were to mine.  I can think of nothing that better encapsulates the spirit of imagination more than Phineas and Ferb.

At the very least, we’ll be rid of the awful, awful Captain EO (Which you can listen to the whole show in our Lifetime Player on the homepage.

Time will tell.

Hosted by Olaf the snowman, from the upcoming Walt Disney Pictures animated feature “Frozen,” the “World of Color − Winter Dreams” show combines new animation with classic winter scenes from such beloved Disney films as “Bambi,” “Fantasia” and “Toy Story.” The show will include new special effects and present some new methods for utilizing the massive “stage” of water, color and light on which “World of Color” is presented.

Steve Davison, the creative director of the original “World of Color” show in Disney California Adventure, is also staging “World of Color − Winter Dreams.” Davison, vice president of parades and spectaculars, Walt Disney Imagineering Creative Entertainment, said: “I am so excited to be bringing new magic to ‘World of Color’ this holiday season. The brand-new show is filled with great music, new effects and, of course, all the magnificence of the ‘World of Color’ fountain and projection system. It’s going to be a very powerful and amazing experience for guests of all ages.”

Millions of guests have enjoyed “World of Color” since it opened to rave reviews in 2010, part of the five-year expansion of Disney California Adventure. The breathtaking, nighttime spectacular brings animation to life on Paradise Bay, as nearly 1,200 powerful fountains create one of the world’s largest projected water screens.

Holidays are always a very special time at the Disneyland Resort, with themed entertainment, sparkling decorations, delicious treats and holiday shopping. Along with the new “World of Color − Winter Dreams,” the season will welcome the return of such beloved Disneyland Park holiday traditions as “A Christmas Fantasy” parade, Sleeping Beauty’s Winter Castle, “it’s a small world” Holiday and “Believe…in Holiday Magic” fireworks followed by a holiday snowfall on Main Street, U.S.A., New Orleans Square and “it’s a small world” mall. Walt Disney Records’ Teen Beach Movie Soundtrack Debuts In The Top 10 On The Billboard 200

Walt Disney Records’ soundtrack to the hit Disney Channel Original Movie “Teen Beach Movie” debuts at No. 8 on the Billboard 200 chart after scanning 25,000 units in its first week of release, according to Nielsen SoundScan.  Teen Beach Movie is the first non-sequel TV movie soundtrack to debut in Top 10 on the Billboard 200 since 2008’s Camp Rock soundtrack.

Starring “Teen Beach Movie” are Ross Lynch (of Disney Channel’s “Austin & Ally” and Hollywood Records’ R5) and Maia Mitchell (ABC Family’s “The Fosters”) as Brady and McKenzie, surfers who take the last wave of summer, one that mysteriously takes them into a classic beach party movie, Wet Side Story. There, it’s surfers versus bikers for control of the beach hangout…and everyone spontaneously breaks into song and dance.  Brady and McKenzie must try to return to present day, but their lives may be changed forever when they inadvertently change the movie’s romantic storyline — and the movie’s handsome surf guy, Tanner, is falling for McKenzie while biker girl Lela is swooning for Brady.

Disney Veterans Kickstart Artistic Adventure in New Film, “Art Story”

From “The Lion King” to “Aladdin,” classic animated films hold a special place in the hearts of people of all ages. The characters and stories stay with a child for years to come. Now, two Disney veterans, Aaron Blaise and Chuck Williams, are working on creating “Art Story,” an animated feature film about a boy and his Grandfather’s adventures through an imaginative world of famous paintings. In order to fund their next film, and build awareness within the creative community, Blaise and Williams are turning to popular crowdfunding site, Kickstarter, to launch development of “Art Story.”

“Art Story” is focused on the main character, Walt, a meticulous and focused 11 year old boy, and his relationship with his erratic and hairbrained Grandfather. The two couldn’t be more opposite and are always at odds with each other; however, they must work together when they get trapped in the vast, imaginative world of paintings. This world is the place that exists on the other side of the canvas, where the famous landscapes and painted characters come to life in their own world. Walt and his Grandpa wander through famous artwork from, “American Gothic” by Grant Wood to “Starry Night” by Vincent van Gogh and “The Persistence of Memory” by Salvador Dalí, stumbling upon various characters and scenes from painting to painting. In their search for a way back home, the two encounter an evil painted character trying to break into their world. In order to stop the villain and return home, Walt and Grandpa must join forces, and adapt to the many different scenarios they come across.

“We wanted to make a movie that family members of all ages love,” says “Art Story” co-director Chuck Williams. “‘Art Story’ is one of those stories that parents can enjoy and are thrilled that their kids will want to watch over and over again.”

With over 20 years of experience working at Disney, co-directors, Aaron Blaise, and Chuck Williams, of “Art Story” are no strangers to the world of animated films. After working on classic stories such as “Aladdin,” “The Lion King,” “Mulan” and “Beauty and the Beast,” the two joined together to spearhead the Oscar nominated for best animated feature film, “Brother Bear,” which Blaise co-directed and Williams produced. Now, their combined experience in bringing beloved characters and stories to life blends together again in “Art Story” to create a masterpiece.

For A Cause announces Walk The World https://awalkaroundtheworld.org, a new kind of walking vacation that will take place at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, November 14-18, 2013. 

Walk The World combines two great experiences into one, a visit to the Walt Disney World Resort and a walking vacation with a purpose. Event participants can save up to $600.00 by registering with For A Cause, compared to booking travel and vacation components separately.

“You might think walking around any one of the resort’s theme parks is more than enough, but there is more to see beyond the theme parks that it’s worth a little extra walking. There are miles of sidewalks and pathways waiting to be explored,” according to event organizer, Robert Webber. “These are probably the best-maintained walking paths that you will encounter anywhere in the world. Here is your chance to walk along perfect sidewalks with peaceful waterways, beautifully maintained gardens, flowering trees and bushes, and award-winning architecture. Participants have several mileage options each day averaging up to 10 miles per day. Each day’s route is unique, taking walkers through a different journey, and they can walk as little or as much as they want.”

The program starts on Thursday evening, November 14, 2013 with registration and a group dinner where participants will get to know their fellow walkers and review safe walking tips.

The registration fee for Walk The World is $995.00 per person and includes double occupancy lodging at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort, group meals, group transportation, group shows, and group entrance to theme parks. Also included are unique experiences like private fireworks viewing and private meals inside of theme parks before or after operating hours, as well as walking guides, route maps, and airport transfers from the Orlando International Airport (MCO) compliments of Disney’s Magical Express. Single participants will be paired with a roommate of the same gender and smoking preference. Single rooms are also available for a nominal charge. Although walkers must be 14+ years old to participate, non-walking family and friends are welcome to share a room with a registered walker, but would be required to follow the group schedule to enjoy savings.

This walking vacation can double as a fundraising walkathon by allowing, but not requiring, participants to choose a charity and try their hand at fundraising. Because the participant has paid all expenses, there is no minimum fundraising requirement and none of the donations they raise will be used to cover their event expenses. Walt Disney Records recently teamed with Amazon.com to release out-of-print titles and classic soundtracks on CD exclusively through Amazon’s CreateSpace manufacture-on-demand service.   Currently, there are 18 titles available under the Disney CD Rarities section of the Disney Music Store on Amazon.com(http://smarturl.it/disneymusicstore) with additional titles coming monthly.

As part of the program, paying tribute to Disney’s most adored Mouseketeer and one of the biggest teen idols of the ’50s, Walt Disney Records is re-releasing a collection of classic recordings by Annette Funicello. Best of Annette features 14 memorable tracks from her illustrious recording career, including hits from the popular beach movies, Disney films and television classics in which she starred.   Featuring smash hits such as “Tall Paul,” “Pineapple Princess” and “Beach Party Tonight,” the Best of Annette songs were selected from the 1994 digitally remastered boxed set, Annette: A Musical Reunion with America’s Girl Next Door. The CD compilation will be available exclusively via Amazon’s CreateSpace service on July 23, 2013.

Other recent titles include soundtracks for Marvel’s The Avengers, Disney-Pixar’s UpRatatouille and Monsters, Inc., plus Lady and the TrampPeter PanPocahontas and Mulan.  In August, The Little Mermaid Songs From the Sea will be available, in advance of The Little Mermaid Diamond Edition Blu-ray release in the fall.
