What are the Guardians of the Galaxy?

By: D-Team Member Adam

Buying Marvel has proved to be a boon for Disney, with Avengers becoming one of the highest grossing films of all time.  That success has led to speculation that Iron Man 3 will receive a similarly huge opening as it sets off Phase 2 of the Marvel Films plan.

The Guardians of the Galaxy are Coming

The Guardians of the Galaxy are Coming

It could be argued that the success of Marvel’s Phase One movies was due in part to them building the franchise around characters that the average movie-goer would have at least a passing familiarity with.  You might not know the stories of Tony Stark, Steve Rogers or Donald Blake, but you’ve likely at least heard of and/or seen Iron Man, Captain America and the Mighty Thor.  Lesser known Marvel characters like Nick Fury, Hawkeye, Black Widow and Maria Hill were introduced via movies about their more famous friends.

But very soon, the heads of Marvel Studios will be taking their first big risk with the release of James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy movie.  There is at least a chance audiences might have heard of Hawkeye or Nick Fury prior to the movies, but virtually no one outside of a comic book store knows who or what the Guardians of the Galaxy are.

The Guardians of the Galaxy

The Guardians of the Galaxy

The original iteration of the Guardians was created in 1969.  A team of aliens from different planets gathered together in the 31st Century to save the Galaxy from a race of alien conquerors known as the Badoon.  They occasionally recruited their inspiration, the Avengers from our time to help them. Eventually the Guardians of the Galaxy received their own ongoing comic in 1990 and ran for 62 issues (roughly 5 years).

The movie will be based loosely on the last Guardians of the Galaxy comic, established by modern legend Keith Giffen and written as an ongoing series in 2008 by the team of Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning. This version of the Guardians was also comprised of aliens from different races, but was based in our time.  The team was assembled to run a suicide mission during an intergalactic crisis. When it was over, the team reassembled with new members.

The Guardians are led by Peter “Starlord” Quill, a half-human astronaut and former space adventurer.  The team changed members multiple times in the nearly 2 years that the book ran.  The movie will feature several core members of this group.  Gamora is a green skinned assassin, known far and wide as the deadliest woman in the galaxy.  Drax the Destroyer is a green, hulking (no pun intended) brute and a feared warrior.  Rocket Raccoon is… well, a raccoon. Or a space raccoon.  He likes beer and big guns.  Groot is a sentient tree and best buddy of Rocket.  If he is killed, he can come back to life as long as a single splinter of Groot is kept alive and intact.

Obviously this story is pretty far from the relatively grounded Avengers.  The reasons for making them into a movie are probably two-fold.  Its probable that someone at Marvel Studios read Abnett and Lanning’s amazing GotG comic.  It was well-received and beloved by its fan. GotG is actually one of several comics that was cancelled by Marvel for un-revealed reasons.

However, this version of the Guardians also has ties to Thanos, the giant purple villain at the end of Avengers.  While it’s unclear whether any of the comic back story will be used in the movie, two of the Guardians have a personal history with Thanos.  Gamora was adopted and trained by Thanos to a weapon.  Drax was human, but after his death he was reincarnated specifically to kill Thanos.

It’s a safe bet that the Guardians of the Galaxy movie will reveal more about Thanos and what his plans are for Earth.

Guardians of the Galaxy is set to premiere in 2014. If you would like to know more, contact you local comic shop to see what is available regarding the Abnett and Lanning series. Marvel Comics has released a new Guardians comic in response to the upcoming movie, but it’s terrible.

Disney Star Jake Short and Pastor Joel Osteen’s niece team to fight Hunger in PSA

Jake Short, star of the Disney hit show A.N.T. Farm and Olivia Osteen , the niece of famous televangelist Pastor Joel Osteen , have taken to the airwaves to promote “Blessings in a Backpack,” a nationwide charity aimed at fighting hunger in our schools.

Disney Channel star Jake Short and Olivia Osteen, niece of Pastor Joel Osteen, team together for Blessings in a Backpack PSA to fight hunger.

Disney Channel star Jake Short and Olivia Osteen, niece of Pastor Joel Osteen, team together for Blessings in a Backpack PSA to fight hunger.

The campaign is highlighted by a public service announcement produced by Sound Tree Entertainment’s Gregory James Blount , who recruited two of today’s brightest young stars to issue a call to action to help keep American school children from going home hungry on the weekends.

Through “Blessings in a Backpack,” each Friday, volunteers donate their time putting food in backpacks of underprivileged children heading home for the weekend. In many cases their homes are without food, and some of the children have no home at all.  For only $80, the program can feed one child for the 38 weekends of the school year.

The PSA spot shows Jake and Olivia’s efforts packing backpacks and detailing how others can help.  It was filmed at Pastor Joel Osteen ‘s famed Lakewood Church in Houston. Chandler Kravitz , a student filmmaker, edited the PSA.

“Jake and Olivia actually support their own schools,” said Blount who has wide-ranging experience in the entertainment industry. “Jake supports the Village Academy with me in Delray Beach, Florida, where he visited the school last year.”

Olivia supports the Janowski Elementary School in Houston.

“Because I’ve had the opportunity to travel to Africa many times, I’ve met a lot of people who are hungry, even malnourished,” Olivia said. “And through ‘Blessings in a Backpack,’ I’ve met kids who for different reasons need help with weekend meals. It’s easy to think hunger only affects certain countries, but the truth is, there are hungry people living in America and your own city.”

Olivia is the niece of Joel Osteen , Pastor of 43,000-member Lakewood Church in Houston, and whose televised worship reaches 10 million households each week.  Pastor Osteen will host “Night of Hope” at Marlins Stadium in Miami this Saturday.

“The entertainment industry is a tough business and I think it’s wonderful when you have young talent who understand the importance of giving back while they’re climbing the ladder of success,” said Blount who in addition to producing the spot, sponsors the Village Academy.” Jake and Olivia understand this and are making a difference.”

The Walt Disney Family Museum Reexamines Alice in Wonderland With Upcoming Art Exhibition

Camille Rose Garcia Exhibit at the Family Museum

Camille Rose Garcia Exhibit at the Family Museum

The Walt Disney Family Museum presents the exhibition “Camille Rose Garcia: Down the Rabbit Hole.” On view starting May 9, this art exhibition in San Francisco features some 40 works by Garcia, alongside seven “Alice in Wonderland” concept paintings by Disney artist Mary Blair from the Museum’s collection. Organized by guest curator Tere Romo, the exhibition celebrates not only Garcia and Blair’s artistry across decades and artistic styles, but also the power of art to draw us into magical worlds that spark engagement and inspiration.

Since its publication in 1865, Lewis Carroll’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” has been reinterpreted visually in a wide range of artistic styles and media, including as an animated Walt Disney film in 1951. Over half a century later, Garcia has updated the enduring classic with her distinctive illustrations that capture a young girl’s surreal adventures after following a rabbit down a hole. In this exhibition of Garcia’s book illustrations, Alice’s encounters with the White Rabbit, Mad Hatter and Red Queen are quirky renditions of the main characters set against colorful backdrops. With her conscious disregard for perspective or scale in her compositions, Garcia creates a fresh and contemporary depiction of the dreamlike story. Her illustrations not only draw from a Goth sensibility, but also the thriving “low-brow art” movement in Los Angeles and its references to classic cartoons, 60’s TV sitcoms, rock music, and comic books. However, in keeping with Lewis’ intended audience, the illustrations retain the animation quality of the Disney film that continues to appeal to all generations.

Walt Disney Family Museum

Walt Disney Family Museum

Included in the exhibition are classic works by Disney legend Mary Blair. Credited with introducing modern art to the Disney studio, Mary Blair’s work was very adventuresome during the 1940s and 50s, especially in her use of asymmetrical shapes in her illustrations of animals, which created more dynamism and visually compelling scenes. Of the many films she contributed to, it was “Alice in Wonderland” that bears her influence as an artist in its bright colors and all-encompassing imagery that visually entices audiences into entering magical worlds.

“Blair and Garcia may have half a century separating them, but they both were carving out new territory. Blair was one of the few women in the animation business; her position is a credit to Disney’s foresight. Garcia’s aesthetics have pushed illustration further into the art world and brought it to the attention of a new, younger generation,” says Romo.

As Garcia stated in an interview with the Los Angeles Times in 2010, “The original John Tenniel illustrations were always some of my favorites and those were definitely lodged in my head. I wanted to stay true to his vision but I’m so influenced by Disney. I loved the backgrounds in their early movies [Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Pinocchio], so I watched a lot of those films to try to get more of a color feel. They were all done in the 1930s with watercolor, which has that very classic touch. Using that was my vision for the work.”

“I always liked the themes of Alice and playing with the idea of landscape being somewhat surreal, cartoonish, not totally based in reality. The story lends itself to the kind of work I do anyway, the sort of shifting of realities,” Garcia continued.

“Camille Rose Garcia: Down the Rabbit Hole” will be on display at The Walt Disney Family Museum from May 9 through November 3, 2013. For more information, visit http://www.waltdisney.org

Greatest Action Movie Ever To Premiere on Disney XD

The Greatest Action Movie Ever to Debut on Disney XD

The Greatest Action Movie Ever to Debut on Disney XD

The Ad Council is joining forces with BAM! Body and Mind and KIDZ BOP to premiere The Greatest Action Movie Ever (G.A.M.E), a kid-targeted film offering fun ways to channel the inner action hero and take steps towards a more active and nutritionally-balanced lifestyle. Starring Ryan Ochoa of the hit Disney XD series Pair of Kings, the first half of the six-minute long G.A.M.E. film will premiere on Sunday, April 14 on Disney XD as part of Disney’s Magic of Healthy Living , an initiative that inspires kids and families to lead healthier lifestyles. Audiences will then be directed to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s BAM! Body and Mind website, BAM.gov, to see the second part of the film and access additional health-related resources. The full-length film will also be featured on KIDZBOP.com and Disney.com.

Created pro bono by McCann Erickson New York, the movie is the result of a two month-long contest that invited kids ages 5-18 to submit videos on KIDZBOP.com that showcase their action moves and healthy eating habits in one of nine different scripted scenes. Kids everywhere had the opportunity to upload their audition videos to KIDZBOP.com, the leading safe social network and video sharing site for kids and tweens with over 1.4 million registered users. More than 1,300 kids submitted videos and auditioned for the film, and over 5,000 kids cast their vote to select real kids from across the nation to star in G.A.M.E. alongside Ryan Ochoa.

“Childhood obesity is an epidemic in our country, and one that requires us to continually challenge children to be active and make healthy eating decisions,” said Peggy Conlon, CEO and president of the Ad Council. “With the support of McCann, BAM!, Disney and KIDZ BOP, we’re thrilled to have been able to engage children nationwide to be a part of this effort that will entertain and educate audiences, while inspiring them to find their own inner action hero.”

Today, nearly one in three children and adolescents in America are overweight or obese, and since 1980, obesity prevalence among children and adolescents has almost tripled. Emphasizing the importance of eating well and being physically active, G.A.M.E. is an extension of the Ad Council’s ongoing partnership with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, initiated in 2005, to combat childhood obesity.

Fight Childhood Obesity

Fight Childhood Obesity

Sasha Junk, senior vice president of marketing at KIDZ BOP, added, “KIDZ BOP is thrilled to partner with Ad Council and McCann New York to support the creation of G.A.M.E. By recruiting kids throughout the country to create an audition video and upload it to KIDZBOP.com, kids had the opportunity to have fun and express themselves, while learning the important messages of the national childhood obesity prevention campaign.”

“CDC’s BAM! Body and Mind website offers interactive games and quizzes and is an engaging way for children to learn about eating healthy and staying active,” said Holly Hunt, Chief, CDC’s School Health Branch. “Establishing healthy behaviors during childhood is easier and more effective than trying to change unhealthy behaviors during adulthood. It is important that messages reaching young people support healthy behaviors where they live, learn, and play.”

Join the Hero Alliance

Join the Hero Alliance

The plot of the Greatest Action Movie Ever follows secret agent Kid X and the Action Hero Alliance as they overcome obstacles to save the world from evil mastermind Lethargo and his ultimate weapon, the Energy Vacuum. Campaign partner CDC’s BAM.gov will post the exclusive full length G.A.M.E. film on their website, along with downloadable games, tips and healthy-lifestyle related resources, including Action Hero Training Manuals, Power Lab Recipes and Market Mission Shopping Lists to help kids and their families emulate the eating and training habits of their favorite action heroes.

“In the battle against childhood obesity, running a traditional TV campaign seems counterintuitive. After all, what good is a commercial if kids end up watching it on the sofa with a bag of chips on their lap?” said Jesse Potack, McCann Erickson New York creative director/writer. Added Benjamin Vendramin, Creative Director/Art Director, “Our challenge was how do you get 5-18-year olds up and moving? This idea takes something kids love—action movies—to get them doing something they usually resist—being physically active and eating right.”

Sofia the First Costumes Pre-Orders Soar on PureCostumes.com

PureCostumes.com

PureCostumes.com recently revealed many new 2013 products on its website, adding to its already large product catalog. By launching the 2013 pre-orders earlier in the year, the online retailer is able to receive feedback regarding its new items and better gauge Halloween market trends. Like every year, Hollywood films, television shows, and pop music trends seem to be the major influences for Halloween costumes. Unsurprisingly, the retailer has already found that several new licenses seem to be coveted by shoppers.

Sofia the First Costumes Ready for Pre-Order

Sofia the First Costumes Ready for Pre-Order

In particular, there has been plenty of attention and demand for the new Sofia the First costumes and accessories. This Disney series premiered in 2012 and with themes focused on princesses and fairytales, the show has quickly become a favorite among toddler girls. As a result, top Halloween costumes manufacturer, Disguise, Inc., quickly jumped on the opportunity to obtain the license and is currently producing costumes and accessories for the animated show.

Although the entire line of Sofia the First costumes and accessories is not scheduled to arrive until later this year, PureCostumes.com has already received plenty of inquiries and pre-orders. With Pure Costume’s pre-order option, the website has been able to eliminate the stress that many consumers experience during the Halloween season due to sold-out items. With Halloween still months away, parents have been placing orders as early March to ensure that they will receive their toddler costumes.

Pure Costumes is predicting that the entire line of Sofia the First products will be a hit for the 2013 Halloween season. Like other toddler princess costumes, the retailer also expects this line to continue to be popular year-round as holiday or birthday gifts. With the show’s breakthrough success and positive feedback PureCostumes.com has experienced, these new licensed costumes may become one of the most popular styles of the year.

Every Character Needs a Sidekick (or Two)! by: D-Team Member Lexie

By: D-Team Member Lexie

We all know that smiles are contagious. If you are going through a tough time or are just having a down day, your closest friends are the ones that can pick you up without fail. Lucky for us, the magic of friendship is something Disney shares great lessons on.

Each starring Disney character has the potential to become our friend, but they have their own special friends too! It’s often the little guys, the sidekicks that bring some of the most lighthearted and memorable moments in our favorite Disney movies.

Aladdin and Abu: What a Team

Aladdin and Abu: What a Team

The mice from Cinderella, the magic carpet from Aladdin and Cogsworth and Lumiere from Beauty and the Beast.  You love them, right?! Perhaps it is the joy brought by characters other than the star that makes Disney extra memorable! It’s about time that the sidekicks got some credit! They can teach us so much, from how to relax right through to how to trust our instincts and take that risky step to make our dreams come true. Wow!

Here is a big question! What is the best way to think about our Disney friends, as sidekicks or as pals?

To me, a sidekick is there to support the main character and to help bring about their happy ending. Of course the star shows their appreciation for the sidekick, but perhaps they are something more to them, something more like a kindred spirit. If this is the case, which I’m thinking it is, then maybe we should think of these loving secondary characters as best friends. They play the role of the supporter, but often end up teaching the star a valuable life lesson that they would have otherwise missed out on. If we didn’t have our Disney friends, then we wouldn’t see the colorful sides of our central characters, they wouldn’t overcome the challenges with such poise and commitment. What is better, sidekick or friend? Take Pocahontas for example.

Cinderella's Best Buds

Cinderella’s Best Buds

Meko and Flic seem like two bumbling and mischievous buddies who don’t do much else other than supply the film’s comedy factor. You have to admit that a raccoon and a bird as unlikely partners in crime is a pretty funny concept in itself. However, what makes them so memorable is that they are able to show Pocahontas that she can only benefit from taking that leap around the riverbend. Initially, the two pals are hesitant, but they grow to see the good nature in John Smith, and Pocahontas then soon learns to trust and bibbidi bobbidi boo, she ended up saving lives! Meko and Flic are great examples of the magic of secondary Disney characters. Even these smaller additions to the story can teach us something about ourselves! Every Disney tale is full of lessons, you just have to know where to look.

Disney movies also teach us that friends are wonderful in every occasion. Whether they are wise, reassuring or just plain friendly, a Disney sidekick will always help out!

Timon Adds to the Adventure

Timon Adds to the Adventure

It is the secondary character that has the ability to save the star, to come along when they are least expected. Perhaps the relationships formed in Disney stories are Walt’s way of letting us know that the universe is on our side, that we are never alone.  We can go with the old que sera sera and a sign will often give us that extra boost of life. Disney always encourages believing in our instincts. Think of it this way, Timon and Pumba certainly saved Simba! I don’t think that there is a better Disney sidekick lesson than ‘Hakuna Matata!’ These friends completely changed our young lion’s outlook on life and turned the situation from a barren desert to a beautiful oasis of life and love! Seeing a meerkat, a warthog and a lion together in real life would probably make you scratch your head in confusion, but Disney manages to make this trio one of the most natural friendships ever imagined. Talk about magic! These unorthodox friends, through their unique and encouraging perspectives teach Simba that it is best to just be yourself, not to be too bothered with overbearing rules. In each scene we see a little bit of TImon and Pumba rub off on the growing lion, and Simba thanks them with his protection. The reciprocity of this trio shows us that friends are a gift and should always be appreciated, because you never know when you could need them to dress in drag and do the hula! Haha!

I’ve found myself asking what qualities are needed to be a good Disney friend? Tinkerbell is Peter’s troublemaking partner, but she still has a good heart. Her firey and sometimes selfish attitude gets in the way of her esteem for Peter, but in the end she manages to patch things up. Tinkerbell’s intentions are not always clear, but you still believe in her and love her nonetheless. To me this shows that Disney understands that life is never perfect, that we have to work through our differences and learn to be patient. Tinkerbell also represents that making friendships work is not an easy feat, but that the effort is always worth it! Tink is still good, even though she sometimes needs reminding! That’s another thing that I love about Disney, even though stories are often about animals, aliens or toys, there is still that underlying human element. We can all see a bit of ourselves in each character, so we can see how their friends would relate to us too! All Disney characters are grounded in some kind of relatable human nature. The world as reflected by Disney is so magical, so for me, it’s easy to see why we dream for a more magical world of our own! Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could go to the toy box and have a quiet chat with our childhood buddies?! Haha!

From a tiny fairy to a box full of toys, Disney sidekicks come in all shapes and sizes, just like our everyday friends. Disney shows us that there are no limits to friendship, that you should try to be open minded and accept friendship from all walks of life. Woody and Buzz have a whole group of friends and they respect each one equally. Where would they be without each other, stuck inside a box and closed off from the possibilities of life together! With friends, these Disney heroes are true representatives of how we should endeavor to treat each other. Whether they are thrown into the situation by no choice of their own, or actively pursue their friendship, each and every Disney story teaches us cherished lessons about ourselves and how trusting others can bring about the most magical of experiences. We can’t get by without some imagination and a little help from our friends!

It Was All Started By a Mouse

It Was All Started By a Mouse

When thinking about just who my favorite sidekick is, I am reassured that they are all fabulous and that we are lucky to have so many brilliant characters to enjoy! There isn’t a single Disney character that isn’t awesome (that includes the villains!) It was a tough choice, but I have come to the conclusion that the best Disney friend is Mickey himself! It has to be him! Mickey mouse is the most famous and life changing sidekick of all. We are always hearing about the man and the mouse, the two we have to thank for the entire vision of Disney. His friendship with Walt, even though it was imaginary, has already given us 90 years of magic and will go on to bring a wealth more! Walt shared his friendship with the world, and what a beautiful friendship it is. Universal, magical and timeless, you can’t get better than that. After all, Walt said it best –  “Lets not forget that it all started with a mouse”.
