IBM THINK Exhibit Opens at INNOVENTIONS at Epcot

 In celebration of National Engineers Week, IBM (NYSE: IBM) teamed up with Orlando-area high school teachers and students today to unveil IBM THINK, a new interactive experience in INNOVENTIONS West at Epcot at Walt Disney World Resort. The 6,600 square-foot interactive exhibit is designed to showcase how the world can work better with the help of technology and innovation.  The THINK experience presented by IBM explores how technology transforms the way we live and work.

To keep visitors inspired after experiencing the exhibit and encourage others to attend, IBM also announced free science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) lesson plans for middle and high school science teachers, along with a companion app for Apple iPads and 10″ Android tablets. The lesson plans enable teachers to use the IBM THINK exhibit content to help students understand the process of innovation, while the THINK Exhibit app brings those lessons to life.

The THINK exhibit engages visitors through a unique combination of experiences. They include a 40-foot “gesture wall” that reveals the ebb and flow of data in our daily lives through colorful visualizations of information such as traffic, solar energy and air quality IBM is also providing game stations, an inspirational film about making the world work better, and a self-guided interactive tour.  The exhibit shows how progress is made possible by a combination of people and technology, and by the purposeful way humans have approached the process of innovation.

“During the past century, IBM has played a key role in making the world work better,” said Lee Green , VP Brand Experience and Strategic Design at IBM. “The THINK exhibit features stories and engaging experiences that appeal to Epcot guests from around the world.”

The new exhibit is based on IBM’s 2011 THINK pop-up exhibit at New York’s Lincoln Center, developed for the company’s Centennial.

To put the concepts of IBM THINK into practice, IBM worked with the New York Hall of Science to develop STEM lessons plans, now available for free online on Teachers TryScience, to inspire students to act as innovators in their daily lives.  Their release intentionally coincides with Engineers Week, an annual program created by the National Engineers Week Foundation to inspire current and future generations to pursue study and careers in science and engineering.

The educational material is brought to life by apps based on the THINK exhibit. Through thousands of images and historical anecdotes, the IBM THINK exhibit app tells stories of the history of progress, from space exploration to weather prediction and medical advances.

The lesson plans and apps help students better understand some of the scientific concepts behind the THINK exhibit and inspire them to be innovators.

“The THINK lessons provide an engaging way to enable students to learn STEM concepts in a real-world context,” said Danielle Miller , Astronomy and Physical Science Teacher at University High School in Florida. “The THINK app and lessons have made my students see the process of innovation in a way they never have before. THINK has helped my students become scientists.”

Some of the THINK lessons include:

  • THINK:  The Process of Innovation – Provides an overview of the concept and process of innovation, using the THINK app
  • Fight the Flu — Introduces students to the science of epidemiology including factors associated with the spread and prevention of disease

The lessons are featured on Teachers Try Science, a free, critically acclaimed web site that provides middle and high school science educators with high quality lessons integrated with practical and engaging teaching techniques.  The process of discovery used in the material encourages students to see, map, understand, believe and act on knowledge. More lessons will be released in Spring 2013.

Shake It Up: I <3 Dance Soundtrack From Walt Disney Records Features 12 Hot Dance Tracks From the Hit Disney Channel Series

Once again, Bella Thorne and Zendaya have the floor – the dance floor, that is, as the stars of Disney Channel’s hit series “Shake It Up” anchor Shake It Up: I <3 Dance soundtrack, a new Walt Disney Records collection of blazing dance tracks featured in the third season of the show. With performances by Bella and Zendaya, fellow Disney stars Selena Gomez , Bridgit Mendler , Roshon Fegan and Caroline Sunshine , as well as up-and-coming stars Coco Jones, McClain Sisters and more, the full soundtrack receives its Radio Disney Planet Premiere on Feb. 23, and then arrives at stores and digital retailers nationwide March 5th.

A concept music video of the debut single, “Contagious Love,” featuring Bella Thorne and Zendaya, and directed by Justin Francis ( Demi Lovato , Black Eyed Peas, Gwen Stefani ) debuts on Disney Channel Friday, March 1. Another focus track, “This is My Dance Floor ” by Bella and Zendaya, will be featured in an upcoming lyrics-based video airing on Disney Channel in March; the video made its online debut on Feb. 11.

Songs featured on the album are:

  1. Contagious Love” by Zendaya and Bella Thorne is an upbeat rap anthem with a heavy-hitting bass-and-drum foundation. Its sweet harmonies and catch chorus echo the song’s universal message about living life to the fullest.
  2. “This Is My Dance Floor,” also from Bella Thorne and Zendaya, is an intense, synth-driven track about showing everyone who’s boss when it comes to owning the floor.
  3. “Beat of My Drum ” by Zendaya is a smoldering track with a pan-African vibe and a fierce beat.
  4. “Blow the System,” with its classic disco beat backed by Bella Thorne ‘s vocals, compares a marathon dance party with rolling the dice on love.
  5. “After Party” by “Shake It Up” co-stars Roshon Fegan and Caroline Sunshine , features a gritty shuffle sound, crazy hard beats in a tale of a party that lasts all night long.
  6. “Holla at the DJ (The DJ Mike D Remix),” a track from the upcoming EP by Hollywood Records artist Coco Jones, is a hip-hop leavened musical conversation between a dancer and her accommodating DJ.
  7. “These Boots Are Made for Walkin'” is a stunning remake of the 1966 Nancy Sinatra classic, here updated for the smartphone era, performed by the star of the Disney XD series “Kickin’ It,” Olivia Holt .
  8. “Sharp as a Razor” by Hollywood Records’ artists McClain Sisters is a sophisticated R&B-flavored dance track that offers a twist on that special relationship between dancer and DJ when both are in synch.
  9. “Future Sounds Like Us” by rising star Dove Cameron is a bright and boisterous tribute to Dance Nation.
  10. “I Can Do Better” by Y.LA borrows a page from Irving Berlin in this up-tempo track about the ultimate dance contest.
  11. Superstar Selena Gomez ‘s popular “Shake It Up” theme song gets an update from 16-year old producer/DJ Cole Plante’s shuffle-infused Reboot remix.

As a bonus, the album includes the smooth and soulful track “We’re Dancing ( Alex Ghenea 3.0 Remix)” by Hollywood Records artist Bridgit Mendler .

With the third season of the dance-driven comedy series well under way, “Shake It Up” remains the #1 live-action TV series in its time period among Kids 2-11 and Kids 6-11. The show chronicles the adventures of best friends CeCe ( Bella Thorne ) and Rocky (Zendaya), whose dreams of becoming professional dancers are realized when they land roles as background dancers on the most popular teen dance show, “Shake It Up, Chicago!”

Inspired by the vivid imagery in the upcoming major motion picture, Disney’s “Oz The Great and Powerful,” Los Angeles fine jewelry designer Joe Vilaiwan has created a show-stopping, numbered and limited-edition couture necklaces, cuffs and earrings befitting the story’s larger-than-life characters.

Directed by Sam Raimi, the highly anticipated movie hits U.S. theaters March 8 and stars James Franco, Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz, Michelle Williams and Zach Braff. It features three very stylish witches, Theodora, Evanora and Glinda, the good witch.

Creating what will be highly collectible “Oz The Great and Powerful” jewelry, Vilaiwan imagined the magical women wearing the spectacular, bib- and collar-style necklaces, each meticulously handcrafted with the finest precious and semi-precious stones and custom-made crystals. Up to 600 individually knotted strands combine into the statement necklaces. A single necklace can require 50 hours of expert construction.

A rising star among private collectors and connoisseurs, Vilaiwan is known for his dramatically sculptural couture pieces, painstakingly woven, knitted or wired into fluid, glittering adornments. His distinctive artworks capture the look of “Oz The Great and Powerful” in six stunning jewelry suites, including a vivid Emerald City inspired necklace that cascades into an elegant starburst and a perfectly bewitching “bad witch” collar of black freshwater pearl loops and mother-of-pearl leaves. Several pieces from the “Oz The Great and Powerful” fine jewelry collection are part of a numbered collector’s series.

“In keeping with my signature style, I designed the ‘Oz The Great and Powerful’ jewelry collection as wearable art. With this week’s Artist Corner segment about Disney Animator Ollie Johnson, I though it be appropriate to post my Pinocchio painting in layers as a small salute to Ollie who animated the character.

As in all of my work, I start with a blank canvas and start sketching the pose of the character in red pencil which seems to not show once oil paint is applied.

The painting layers are done over several days giving enough time for the oil to dry.

At long last Disney Cruise Line has released the remainder of the itineraries for 2014 sailings. The itineraries came with a mix of surprise and the expected.

As you may have guessed, the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy will continue their popular Bahamian and Caribbean itineraries from Port Canaveral throughout the year with rotating itineraries between Western and Eastern Caribbean and stops at the most popular port of all, Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island.

The unknown always revolves around the classic ships, the Disney Magic and the Disney Wonder, as these ships are sized appropriately to fit in more exotic ports, those narrow European channels and even the Panama Canal.
