Candles and Antlers and Dragons, Oh My!

Grand Opening of NEW FANTASYLAND 2012

If you are among the living you have at least some knowledge of this “New Fantasyland” everyone has been talking about. The official opening ceremony for the largest expansion in Magic Kingdom history got underway with help from Tom Staggs (Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman), Ginnifer Goodwin (the actress who plays Snow White on the ABC show “Once Upon A Time”) and American Idol singer Jordin Sparks. Mickey was, of course, dressed to the nines in a brand new outfit designed especially for the occasion.

The media hullaballoo of New Fantasyland was of course accompanied by our favorite Disney friends in their new royal attire and the voices of our pasts with Jodi Benson (the voice of Ariel), Paige O’Hara (the voice of Belle) and my personal favorite, Jo Anne Worley (voice of the Wardrobe).

“Dancing with the Stars” pros Tony Dovolani (this season’s winner!) and Chelsie Hightower twirled around the ballroom floor inside of Be Our Guest restaurant making the way for Belle and Beast to do likewise.

New Fantasyland 2012

New attractions featuring The Little Mermaid, Belle and Dumbo are now open and the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train is under heavy construction and expected to be operational in 2014.

Join Belle and special guest Lumiere (and his fellow candlesticks) in the library for Enchanted Tales with Belle and then head over to Gaston’s Tavern for La Few’s Brew. This non-alcoholic frozen apple cider is the sweetest of treats and you can grab a manly meal such as a pork shank or turkey leg and have a seat in the tiny tavern where you’ll be surrounded by antlers, he uses them in all of his decorating!

Dragons Over Fantasyland

As a special treat for the official opening of New Fantasyland a fire breathing dragon flew over the Magic Kingdom. While it was quite a sight to behold the story is the dragon will only appear for special occasions and won’t become a regular part of the nightly Magic Kingdom routine. When asked about the appearance of the dragon Creative Director of New Fantasyland, Chris Beatty, stated “All I’ll say is Imagineers are always trying new things and new technologies to bring stories to life. And the dragon was just sort of a little sneak peek into some of our technology and new things we’re trying.”

Netflix Obtains Walt Disney Studios Films as a Pay-TV Option in 2016

Netflix Online Streaming

Netflix has gained the exclusive rights in the United States to have movies from Walt Disney Studios Films beginning in 2016. This is an exclusive 3 year deal that makes Netflix a big player against other pay-television services such as HBO and Showtime.

This new agreement will allow Netflix viewers to pay an extra fee to watch new films. “Disney movies will become available to stream from Netflix seven to nine months after they are first shown in theaters. A Netflix spokesman said that time frame is “accelerated” compared with when Starz currently gets new releases.” This news is a major game player blow to Starz and Disney who joined up previously and included Pixar and Marvel. Disney has also given Netflix the immediate non-exclusive streaming right to many of its older library with such films as Dumbo, Alice in Wonderland, and many other classics.

“Starz will continue to be the exclusive home of all Disney movies, including the Lucasfilm, Marvel and Pixar releases, and their accompanying digital streaming rights, into 2017,” the company said in a statement. “Our decision not to extend the agreement for Disney output past that time allows us the opportunity to implement our plan to dramatically ramp up our investment in exclusive, premium-quality original series which will best meet the needs of our distributors and subscribers.”

Walt Disney Company get the “All-Clear” from Federal Regulators Today to Purchase LucasFilm

The Walt Disney Company

It seems the Federal Antitrust Regulators have given the Walt Disney Company an ALL CLEAR to buy LucasFilm for Four Billion that also includes the popular Star Wars franchise.

No ‘closing date’ for the purchase has been announced but Disney now has the all-clear to take on the ‘universe’ of LucasFilm. I am guessing Disney will want to move this along with the recent announcements of the first film in the next series of movies with Episode VII coming as soon as 2015 with more films to follow very quickly after.

I still think this is a great move for both Lucas, Disney and also a positive move for Star Wars and Disney Fans alike. All Systems Go…..

A Christmas Fantasy Comes to Life

*characters/floats subject to change

Donald Duck at the Christmas Day Parade Taping

From fairy tales to classic Christmas carols, Disney friends and holiday characters spread joy and good tidings through Disneyland Park in California and the Magic Kingdom Park in Florida with fanciful floats and colorful cavalcades. Some of the featured floats and Disney friends in this year’s festivities include:

  • Princess Merida, from the Disney Pixar animated film “Brave,” makes her holiday parade debut. The bow and arrow-wielding heroine celebrates Scottish heritage with a troupe of dancers, bagpipers and drummers;
  • Popular gadget-building brothers from the smash-hit Disney XD animated series, Phineas & Ferb, dance down the parade route to greet their fans (sharp-eyed viewers also might spot the mysterious Agent P lurking about);
  • Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse show off their holiday best atop an ornate Christmas Tree float, accompanied by one of Mickey’s good pals, Duffy the Disney Bear;
  • Donald Duck, Daisy Duck and Goofy have a “soundsational” good time, following a drum line of merry musicians;
  • May the holidays be with you! Star Wars villain Darth Vader and his legion of loyal Stormtroopers land in the Disney Parks galaxy with a “Force”-ful parade march;
  • Disney Princesses Tiana, Rapunzel, Mulan, Pocahontas, Cinderella, Snow White, Belle, Aurora, Jasmine, along with their charming princes, join the procession in regal fashion. Direct from Disney Junior, Sofia the First makes her “Disney Parks Christmas Day Parade” debut in a royal, horse-drawn carriage.
  • It’s a “pirate-palooza” as Disney Junior stars Jake and the Never Land Pirates commandeer the holiday festivities with some help from the most infamous scallywags to sail the high seas, Capt. Jack Sparrow and Capt. Barbossa from the “Pirates of the Caribbean” film saga and theme park attractions;
  • How about a little Hunny and Pixie Dust to start your Christmas Day? Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore lead the way on shiny sleds with Tinker Bell, her sister Periwinkle and a fleet of sparking snowflakes skating close behind;
  • Viewers get a sneak-peek into Santa’s factory where “Toy Story” saga stars Buzz Lightyear, Woody, Jessie, Bullseye and Lotso spring to life in celebration of the season;
  • Longtime ‘toon favorites Horace Horsecollar and Clarabelle Cow join everyone’s favorite chipmunks, Chip and Dale, and Duckburg’s richest resident, Scrooge McDuck, on a float of Winter Wonderland fun;
  • Plenty more Disney Pixar pals join the party, including The Incredibles, Sully, Mike & Boo from “Monsters Inc.,” Dug, Russell and Carl from “Up,” and Remy from “Ratatouille.”
  • The famous Disney Parks Toy Soldiers and Gingerbread Men join enchanted elves, pretty paper packages and stuffed-to-the-brim Christmas stockings to let everyone know that the holidays are here;
  • And what would a Christmas parade be without The North Pole’s most famous red-suited resident?  Holiday spirit is felt in every heart when Santa Claus and his reindeer make their holly jolly way down Main Street, U.S.A.

Scootaround Introduces Meet and Greet Services to Walt Disney World

Walt Disney World Resort and Scootaround Join Up

Scootaround Inc. is introducing an expanded level of service in Orlando with the launch of a new Meet and Greet service for customers renting electric scooters (ECV), wheelchairs and powerchairs for their stay at Walt Disney World hotels and resorts.

“A significant number of our customers are traveling to Orlando and staying at Walt Disney World properties. We thought about what we could do to create an enhanced service and to better serve these customers. We came up with the idea of a meet and greet service.” said Kerry Renaud, Scootaround’s President and Chief Operating Officer.
“This really gives us the opportunity to connect with our customers, answer questions and address any concerns they may have. It also lets us personally meet our customers, and to thank them for choosing Scootaround. So far, the response from customers and Walt Disney World personnel has been outstanding,” said Sue Kelly, Scootaround’s Orlando location manager.

When a customer rents a scooter, wheelchair, or powerchair for delivery at Walt Disney World properties in Orlando, a Scootaround customer service representative will work with them to set up a specific delivery time. Upon delivery, a Scootaround representative will personally meet the customer, thank them for their order, and give them a quick tutorial of the equipment. When the rental is over, a Scootaround representative will again meet the customer to pick up the equipment.
