OMG Yes, Disney Rarities Music Coming! Walt Disney Records And Fairfax Classics Announce Details For The Silly Symphony Collection Box Set

OMG Yes, Disney Rarities Music Coming! Walt Disney Records And Fairfax Classics Announce Details For The Silly Symphony Collection Box Set

OMG Yes, Disney Rarities Music Coming! Walt Disney Records And Fairfax Classics Announce Details For The Silly Symphony Collection Box Set

Less than a year after Mickey Mouse’s debut in Steamboat Willie, the Walt Disney Studio embarked on a decade-long series of music-driven shorts whose breakthroughs would forever change the direction of animation and would have a massive impact on popular culture. The 75 cartoons – called Silly Symphonies - pioneered “three-strip” Technicolor, introduced Donald Duck, and created a pop music phenomenon with “Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?” They won seven Academy Awards® for Best Short Subject (Cartoon) between 1932 and 1939.

The Silly Symphony Collection is a first-of-its-kind box set from Walt Disney Records and Fairfax Classics featuring the complete restored soundtracks from all 75 Silly Symphony shorts from 1929-1939, with more than 8 hours of music over 16 vinyl LPs.

The limited edition collection is housed in 8 tip-on gatefold jackets with original animation art in a beautifully constructed foil-stamped and numbered slipcase. Soundtracks of Disney classics such as The Skeleton Dance by Carl Stalling, Three Little Pigs by Frank Churchill, and Donald Duck’s debut The Wise Little Hen by Leigh Harline will be presented in full for the first time ever on record. Each gatefold jacket includes detailed liner notes for every short by Disney historians J.B. Kaufman and Russell Merritt, authors of the definitive book on the series, Walt Disney’s Silly Symphonies: A Companion to the Classic Cartoon Series.

Kaufman adds, “It’s well known that the Silly Symphonies were built around music, but most of us can’t watch the films without being distracted by the visuals. This set is a brilliant idea, isolating the sound so that we can appreciate, for the first time, just how good the music is. I think it will change the way people look at these classic cartoons.”

Pre-order for the box set will begin at D23 EXPO: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, August 14th through August 16th, 2015 in Anaheim, California, and will continue online at Disney Music Emporium (www.sillysymphonycollection.com) on August 17th at 8:00 am PDT.  Pre-orders will ship to arrive in time for the holidays.

The Silly Symphony Collection will include a free digital download with purchase of the box set and will retail for $399.98. Each guest who pre-orders The Silly Symphony Collection will receive a free limited edition 10″ vinyl single featuring “The Skeleton Dance” on the A side and “Three Little Pigs” on the B side.

J.B. Kaufman and Russell Merritt, along with Restoration Producer Randy Thornton will be on hand at D23 EXPO 2015 signing The Silly Symphony Collection 10″ single on Friday, August 14th and Sunday, August 16th.

A set of 3 limited edition Silly Symphony postcards are being handed out in various locations throughout the D23 EXPO 2015 and fans can follow Fairfax Classics on Twitter (@fairfaxclassics) to find out how to obtain them.

Noted documentary director Steve Elkins has produced a short film that explores the historical significance of the Silly Symphonies and the making of The Silly Symphony Collection box set.  The Silly Symphony documentary features J.B. Kaufman and Russell Merritt, as well as Dave Bossert, Head of Special Projects at Walt Disney Animation Studios and Grammy®-winning producer Randy Thornton from Disney Music Group.  View and share the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3giN7LzMA3c

Walt Disney Records: The Legacy Collection ‘FANTASIA’ Review

Walt Disney Records: The Legacy Collection 'FANTASIA'

Walt Disney Records: The Legacy Collection ‘FANTASIA’

by: D-Team Paige

In the 75 years since its release, “Fantasia” has been bringing the beauty of animation and music together for audiences in a way only Disney can do.  Now, the soundtrack for the film has been released for all to enjoy.  “The Legacy Collection: Fantasia” 4-disc set includes all of the original music by Leopold Stokowski, a digital re-recording by Irwin Kostal, and more.

Disc 1 will immerse you in a score of music performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra starting with “Tocatta and Fugue in D Minor, BWV 565” composed by Johan Sebastian Bach and ending with “The Rite of Spring” composed by Igor Stravinsky.  Continuing with Disc 2 is the second half of the film’s music, including “Night on Bald Mountain” by Modeste Moussorgsky, and some additional bonus tracks, such as the Sterling Holloway reading of “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice .”

Discs 3 and 4 follow the same format as the previous discs, but this time with the digital re-recordings performed by the Disney Studio Orchestra and Chorus.  As a bonus on Disc 4, a reading by Sterling Holloway of “Peter and the Wolf” can be enjoyed.

Every piece from the sweeping score in the film is included on these discs in performance order for all to enjoy.  The wonderful thing about these selections is that they stand alone from their animation, so they can be appreciated with or without the film before you.  A gem among gems, it is a worthy addition to any Disney and/or music fan’s collection.

Marvel Music And Hollywood Records Present Marvel’s Ant-Man Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Marvel Music And Hollywood Records Present Marvel's Ant-Man Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Marvel Music And Hollywood Records Present Marvel’s Ant-Man Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Marvel Music and Hollywood Records will release the original motion picture digital soundtrack for Marvel’s Ant-Man on July 17, 2015 and will be followed by the physical CD release on July 31, 2015. The score features music by Christophe Beck (“Frozen,” “Edge of Tomorrow,” “The Hangover,” “Pitch Perfect”). Marvel’s Ant-Man delivers a high-stakes, tension-filled adventure in U.S. theaters on July 17, 2015.

The film’s director, Peyton Reed, acknowledges one of the key elements of a heist movie is music. “Christophe Beck is the composer on the movie and one of the things we talked about was how I wanted a recognizable theme for the hero and whether or not that could be done in the year 2015,” says Reed. “But we also wanted something that said ‘heist movie’ with a little bit of jazzy vibe to it and also be really fun because even though the stakes are really high in the movie, it’s fun.”

Beck adds, “For Marvel’s Ant-Man, I wanted to write a score in the grand symphonic tradition of my favorite Super Hero movies, with a sweeping scope and a big, catchy main theme. What makes this score stand out among other Marvel movies, though, is a sneaky sense of fun, since it is, after all, not only a Super Hero movie, but also a heist comedy.”

The next evolution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe brings a founding member of The Avengers to the big screen for the first time with Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man. Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, master thief Scott Lang must embrace his inner hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.

Marvel’s Ant-Man stars Paul Rudd as Scott Lang aka Ant-Man, Evangeline Lilly as Hope van Dyne, Corey Stoll as Darren Cross aka Yellowjacket, Bobby Cannavale as Paxton, Michael Peña as Luis, Tip “T.I.” Harris as Dave, Wood Harris as Gale, Judy Greer as Maggie, David Dastmalchian as Kurt, and Michael Douglas as Dr. Hank Pym.

Peyton Reed directs Marvel’s Ant-Man with Kevin Feige, p.g.a. producing and Louis D’Esposito, Alan Fine, Victoria Alonso, Michael Grillo, Stan Lee  and  Edgar Wright serving as executive producers. The story is by Edgar Wright & Joe Cornish and the screenplay is by Edgar Wright & Joe Cornish and Adam McKay & Paul Rudd.

Marvel’s Ant-Man original motion picture digital soundtrack will be available at digital retailers on July 17, 2015 and the physical album will be available wherever music is sold on July 31, 2015.

Merchoid reveals stunning new Star Wars Millennium Falcon 3D Wall Light

Merchoid is debuting the latest in their range of officially licensed Star Wars lights, the Millennium Falcon 3D wall light. The 15” model is a decorative light that can be easily screwed onto a bedroom or lounge wall and comes with an exclusive ‘crash’ decal sticker that makes it look as though the Falcon has smashed into the wall.

When the light is turned on, the Falcon’s exhaust shines a neon-futuristic blue, while the cockpit and guidelights beam bright yellow – giving any room a warm glow. The Millennium Falcon 3D Wall Light releases on 15th November and is available to preorder from Merchoid.com now (which includes free worldwide shipping).

Company Director Simon Ward says “We think it’s the coolest hunk of junk in the galaxy. The reaction from people has been truly amazing; they immediately say ‘Wow! I want it!’. But as it’s part of our new Star Wars: Episode VII range, it’s still in production. It will be released in November, nearer the new film’s actual release date.”

Merchoid’s currently available 3D Star Wars lights are Darth Vader, Yoda and Boba Fett, each of which come with a ‘crash’ decal sticker to make it look as though the character has smashed through the wall. As part of their Episode VII range, they will be releasing 3D lights for the film’s most popular characters and vehicles, including the Death Star, R2-D2 and Vader’s lightsaber– all of which are available to view and preorder now at http://www.merchoid.com.

The Falcon is Ready for your Room

Simon adds “The lights are powered by Philips energy efficient LED bulbs, which never run hot, never need changing and can run for hours from just a couple of AA batteries. For these reasons, we’ve found parents love them as night lights for kids’ bedrooms just as much as geeks love them for their games rooms or man caves.”

Although no 3D Lights for Episode VII specific characters have yet been announced, Simon says “We have some really exciting stuff planned for Episode VII that we’re not allowed to talk about yet. Watch this space…”

Disney Takes Important Step Towards Eliminating Smoking from Youth-Rated Movies: As You Sow

The Walt Disney Company has become the first major Hollywood studio to prohibit cigarette smoking depictions in films they produce with youth ratings. The company’s new policy will limit smoking depictions to films with an R rating, a move the U.S. Surgeon General has said could save the lives of over 1,000,000 children if the entire industry followed suit. The new policy covers all films that Disney produces, but disappointingly does not extend to films the company distributes.

“Disney is showing their leadership by taking action on the Surgeon General and CDC report, implementing a policy with direct impact on this public health crisis,” said Andrew Behar, CEO of environmental health advocacy non-profit As You Sow. “The next step should be to publicly endorse an MPAA policy to require an R rating for all films depicting smoking.”

“We are extending our policy to prohibit smoking in movies across the board, [to] Marvel, Lucas, Pixar, [and] Disney films,” said Disney CEO Robert Iger, responding to shareholders at Disney’s annual meeting on March 12. “In terms of any new characters that are created under any of those labels we would absolutely prohibit smoking in any of those films,” Iger added later.

In 2012, the US Surgeon General concluded, “There is a causal relationship between depictions of smoking in the movies and the initiation of smoking among young people.” In 2015, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention concluded, “Giving an R rating to movies with smoking would be expected to reduce the number of teen smokers by nearly one in five (18%) and prevent one million deaths from smoking among children alive today.”

“Consistent with health authorities, Disney’s policy exempts smoking for depictions of historical figures, and for negative portrayal of smoking,” said Tom McCaney, Associate Director of Corporate Social Responsibility at The Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia. “But, seemingly contrary to Mr. Iger’s commitment, Disney’s policy does not extend to movies Disney distributes under its Touchstone brand; we hope the company closes this loophole and also extends the policy to all tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, which is important as youth tobacco use changes.”

A coalition of investors, including As You Sow and faith-based shareholders Trinity Health and Sisters of St. Francis (part of the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility) have engaged with Disney and other studios on the issue of tobacco impressions in films for over a decade.

As you Sow: Disney takes the lead on Eliminating Smoking from Youth Films

“We commend Disney for this historic move,” said Rev. Michael Crosby, Tobacco Issue Coordinator for ICCR. “However, this is still an industry-wide problem that has not been resolved by the MPAA. The CDC demonstrated that the R rating for kid-rated movies could save 1,000,000 lives. Disney is part of the solution, but 88% of youth-rated films are not made by Disney.”
