Disney’s Create Tomorrowland – XPRIZE Challenge – Share Your Vision Of The Future

Inspired by the upcoming Disney movie “Tomorrowland,” The Walt Disney Studios, Disney Citizenship, and XPRIZE announce a nationwide challenge for young innovators.

Beginning April 22, 2015, Disney’s Create Tomorrowland – XPRIZE Challenge invites kids to imagine themselves in the future and report back to the present through video, imagery or stories about one new and amazing invention or innovation they encounter, how it works, and the impact it has on the future.

In June, six winners will have a once–in-a-lifetime mentorship experience with a leader in their area of interest. In addition, each winner will receive a $3,000 check, a 3D Printer from 3D Systems, and registration for FIRST® LEGO® League for the competition season 2015-2016 in the U.S.

“‘Tomorrowland’ has always been a place of possibility in our parks and for the creative team behind our new film,” said Sean Bailey, President, Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production. “The future will be steered by the imaginations of our young people, and Disney is thrilled to work with XPRIZE to encourage and inspire the next generation of thinkers and dreamers to build the future they imagine is possible.”

“We are excited to launch the Create Tomorrowland XPRIZE Challenge, which gives young people a platform to voice and depict their creative, bold and imaginative problem-solving inventions of the future,” said Trish Halamandaris, Senior Vice President Marketing & Communications at XPRIZE. “At XPRIZE we believe that solutions to the problems facing humanity can come from anyone, anywhere and one of these young innovators just might come up with an idea that can truly turn Tomorrowland into reality.”

Participants will compete in two divisions: Junior Division (8-12 years old), and Senior Division (13–17 years old). All entrants must have prior consent from their parent or legal guardian in order to participate in the challenge. Official Rules and details about the Challenge are available at http://XPRIZEchallenge.org/CreateTomorrowland. Official registration and submission period starts April 22, 2015, and runs through May 17, 2015.

Submissions will be judged on innovation, creativity and presentation. XPRIZE will provide a panel of judges who will evaluate and score all submissions, and six (6) winners will be chosen.  Supporting XPRIZE Partners include FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), 3D Systems and the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

New “Comic Strip Only” Newspaper Launched on Kickstarter w/ Original Artwork by Former Disney Animator Tom Bancroft

New “Comic Strip Only” Newspaper Launched on Kickstarter w/ Original Artwork by Former Disney Animator Tom Bancroft

New “Comic Strip Only” Newspaper Launched on Kickstarter w/ Original Artwork by Former Disney Animator Tom Bancroft

Seeking to preserve a uniquely American art form, Nashville based media entrepreneur Logan Sekulow announced the launch of Laugh-O-Gram™, a weekly, family friendly comic strip only newspaper delivered by mail. Acknowledging the importance of grassroots support, Sekulow chose Kickstarter to launch the paper.

Each issue of Laugh-O-Gram will feature six full-color pages of classic and original comics. The paper hopes to bring the funnies to a new generation, while retaining what made them appealing to the pre-2000s generation. The paper will be printed on newsprint and delivered directly to the mailboxes of subscribers.

Classic titles include Peanuts, Garfield, Family Circus, Beatle Bailey, Amazing Spiderman, Popeye, Dennis the Menace, Zits, Ziggy, Baby Blues, Hi and Lois, The Phantom, Dilbert, FoxTrot, Nancy and more. Along with the classics, Laugh-O-Gram is fostering a new generation of comics through original content by accomplished and aspiring cartoonists.

With traditional newspaper subscriptions in decline, Sekulow saw a need to save the “funny pages.”

“The funny pages were a part of my childhood and were very important to me,” Sekulow says. “Now, I have a son of my own. I want to share that experience with him and with families around the country.”

Laugh-O-Gram has enlisted support of renowned cartoonists and animators who share a love for comic strips. Laugh-O-Gram will feature former Disney animator Tom Bancroft’s original comic strip “Outnumbered.”

“When we were little kids, it was all about comics.” Bancroft says. “I love this idea.”

Current syndicated cartoonists have endorsed this project as well. Guy Gilchrist, the cartoonist and writer of the legendary strip Nancy, says, “I think it’s a great idea and I just want it to fly. Comics are an American art form, like jazz and the blues, and we can’t ever let it go away.”

The Kickstarter campaign rewards include various subscription packages and original art. Artist contributing original pieces include Tom Bancroft, Guy Gilchrist, and fine-artist Noah.

Beyond preserving the comics of the past, Laugh-O-Gram hopes to inspire a new generation of children to become the next great American artists.

“We want kids involved with this project.” Sekulow says. “Above all, we want to instill creativity in a young generation, as well as showcase the amazing American art of the past, present, and future.” Laugh-O-Gram will leave a blank strip in each paper for the personal expression of its loyal readers.

The 30 day Laugh-O-Gram Kickstarter campaign has launched with a goal of $15,000. It concludes April 24, 2015.

Museum of Science Presents World Premiere of The Science Behind Pixar

Museum of Science Presents World Premiere of The Science Behind Pixar

Museum of Science Presents World Premiere of The Science Behind Pixar

This summer, visitors to the Museum of Science, Boston will be inspired by the science and technology behind some of the most beloved animated films and their characters, with the world premiere of The Science Behind Pixar. This interactive 10,000 square foot exhibition showcases the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) concepts used by the artists and computer scientists who help bring Pixar’s award-winning films to the big screen.

Created by the Museum of Science and Pixar, and featuring more than 40 interactive exhibit elements, The Science Behind Pixar demonstrates the technology that supports the creativity and artistry of Pixar’s storytellers. The exhibition is broken into eight distinct sections, each focusing on a step of the filmmaking process – Modeling, Rigging, Surfaces, Sets & Cameras, Animation, Simulation, Lighting and Rendering – providing visitors with a unique view of the production pipeline and concepts used at Pixar every day. Visitors of all ages will engage in and learn about the filmmaking process through hands-on activities inspired by some of Pixar’s most treasured films, from the first-ever computer animated feature film Toy Story, which opened nearly two decades ago, to Pixar’s newest film, Inside Out, releasing in June 2015.

The Science Behind Pixar is a behind-the-scenes look at how our movies are made,” said Ed Catmull, president of Pixar and Disney Animation Studios. “The interactive exhibition gives people the opportunity to learn about the jobs our filmmakers do every day and tackle similar problems. It’s a great demonstration of how much creativity and imagination is involved in the science, technology, engineering, art and math thinking essential to our filmmaking process.”

The Science Behind Pixar offers a variety of hands-on activities that empower visitors to imagine the STEM concepts behind Pixar’s films in a fun, engaging format. To better understand the science and math that goes into creating the worlds and characters of Pixar’s films, visitors will hear first-hand from members of the studios’ production teams. They will also be invited to experience different roles within the production pipeline, through screen-based activities and physical interactive exhibits. In Sets & Cameras, for example, visitors will discover how a bugs-eye view was achieved for A Bug’s Life, through camera angles and large-set design within the computer.

Museum of Science: Boston

Museum of Science: Boston

Visitors will envision how digital sculptures are created based on sketches from artists in Modeling, and explore Lighting to solve challenges similar to what Pixar artists faced in creating animated water with virtual light in Finding Nemo. Rigging showcases how the models are given a virtual skeleton to enable the animators to add movement, and in Surfaces, visitors can immerse themselves in the techniques behind adding color and texture to every surface in a film. Visitors will also have the opportunity to take their photo with human-size recreations of many of their favorite Pixar film characters, including Buzz Lightyear, Dory, Mike and Sulley, Edna Mode, and WALL•E.

“Throughout the exhibition, visitors will engage in hands-on, screen-based, and physical activities that let them explore the computational thinking skills behind Pixar’s process in a compelling and participatory way,” said Ioannis Miaoulis, Museum president and director.

The Science Behind Pixar explores the creativity and artistry of the Pixar filmmakers, highlighting how computers are used as a filmmaking tool. The exhibition puts you into the role of each aspect of the Pixar filmmaking process, and we hope visitors will increase their knowledge and understanding of the core STEM content behind computer animation.”

Tickets for The Science Behind Pixar go on sale in April. For information including prices and availability, please call , (TTY) or visit the Museum’s web site at mos.org

New Original Song “Making Today A Perfect Day” Featured In New Animated Short “Frozen Fever”

New Original Song "Making Today A Perfect Day" Featured In New Animated Short "Frozen Fever"

New Original Song “Making Today A Perfect Day” Featured In New Animated Short “Frozen Fever”

“Frozen Fever” welcomes back to the big screen the voices that helped bring the “Frozen” favorites to life, and introduces a new song, “Making Today a Perfect Day.” Beginning today for a limited time, the track is available exclusively at iTunes (iTunes.com/FrozenFever).

Kristen Bell (Showtime’s “House of Lies”) once again lends her voice to Anna, and Idina Menzel (Broadway’s “If/Then”) returns as the voice of Elsa. Jonathan Groff (Fox’s “Glee”) voices Kristoff, and Josh Gad (“The Comedians”) provides the voice of unforgettable snowman Olaf. Oscar®-winning songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez (“Up Here”) and Robert Lopez (“Broadway’s “The Book of Mormon”) wrote the all-new song for the short, and composer Christophe Beck (“Cake”) provides the score.

In “Frozen Fever,” it’s Anna’s birthday and Elsa and Kristoff are determined to give her the best celebration ever, but when Elsa catches a cold, her powers may put more than just the party at risk.  The tale is told musically with “Making Today a Perfect Day,” with Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Jonathan Groff and Josh Gad lending their voices to the original song.

According to the songwriters, “Making Today A Perfect Day” showcases Elsa’s great desire to surprise Anna—all while battling an ever-worsening cold. “I think on some deep level,” says Lopez, “she knows she shouldn’t be doing this party. She should be in bed. But Elsa is fierce and her love for her sister is fierce. So the song has a really intense drive to it—especially the piano.”

Adds Anderson-Lopez, “We wanted it to be that perfect sunny-afternoon song so that it fought against the situation that she’s getting sick; that adds to the comedy.”

Reuniting with the performers was like getting together with old friends, says Anderson-Lopez. “I feel like we’ve been through something extraordinary together and that connection will never go away.”

Directed by Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, produced by Peter Del Vecho and Aimee Scribner, and executive produced by John Lasseter, “Frozen Fever” opens March 13, 2015, in front of Disney’s live-action “Cinderella.” The “Cinderella” soundtrack is also available on CD.
