Port Adventures Immerse Disney Cruise Line Guests in Adventure and Culture on 2015 Norwegian Fjords Sailings

Anna and Elsa visit Norway with Disney Cruise Line

Anna and Elsa visit Norway with Disney Cruise Line

Disney Cruise Line invites families to explore culturally rich and exotic locales, with Port Adventures like only Disney can do, during its 2015 Norwegian Fjords sailings.

From June to August 2015, the Disney Magic returns to Europe, visiting the Norwegian Fjords and Iceland for the first time. Guests exploring these new ports, steeped in Viking history, will be treated to richly diverse destinations that showcase iconic locations, enchanting cultures, tantalizing cuisine and unrivaled experiences.

To elevate guests’ experiences in Norway, Disney Cruise Line Port Adventures are designed to entertain and inspire both children and adults—in true Disney fashion—with an extra dash of pixie dust.

“Frozen” Festivities and Viking Ventures in Ålesund

For the first time in forever, Anna, Elsa and Kristoff from the animated hit “Frozen” join Disney Cruise Line guests in Alesund, marking their very first appearance in the land that inspired their story. Only Disney guests are invited to a Norwegian summer celebration at the Sunnmore Open Air Museum where the festivities culminate with the grand arrival of the beloved sisters and their ice-loving companion, Kristoff, who join in the lively revelry. After being personally greeted by their “Frozen” friends, and surrounded by the idyllic beauty of Norway, guests dance to local musicians and sample tasty Norwegian specialties, including svele, a traditional sweet pancake from the region.

Another Ålesund adventure exclusive to Disney Cruise Line includes a quest to a Viking village on the island of Giske, where guests head back in history to meet the village chieftain and experience the Viking world. Adventurers find themselves in the middle of daily Viking life and mingle with members of the Norse families, experiencing first-hand the traditions, authentic food and games that come with being a Viking. Guests also learn traditional Viking handiwork and put it to practice by crafting their own leather bags.

Iconic Fjord Horses in Olden

Guests travel from the quaint village of Olden on a Port Adventure exclusive to Disney Cruise Line, visiting a Norwegian Fjord Horse Center to experience one of the world’s oldest breeds and one of the country’s national symbols, the Norwegian Fjord Horse. The adventure includes an up-close look at the stallions, mares and foals in a tour of the stables. Guests also have an opportunity to interact with the horses and see these magnificent animals in action. This includes watching a dynamic riding performance and taking in the picturesque scenery during a carriage ride around the grounds.

A Taste of Norway in Kristiansand

For those with a culinary passion, a Port Adventure exclusive to Disney Cruise Line in centuries-old Kristiansand provides the perfect hands-on cooking experience. Guests don their aprons and create Nordic specialties first-hand, such as succulent wild game filets and krumkaker, a heavenly waffle cookie typically served around Christmastime. The experience culminates with guests enjoying their sumptuous meal paired with a glass of wine.

The Great Outdoors of Geiranger

From the port of Geiranger, crowning jewel of the Norwegian fjords, comes an experience just for Disney Cruise Line guests – a visit to the Gjaera Mountain Farm where the local family provides an up-close look at daily life. Children join Disney Cruise Line youth counselors to create one-of-a-kind stamped pillows in the farm’s printing studio using handmade wooden stamps that have been passed down through the family’s many generations. Meanwhile, adults explore the farm and its microbrewery, sampling fresh brews. After building up an appetite, everyone reunites for a taste of traditional Norwegian foods produced at the farm including juices, breads, creams and cured meats.

Another journey brings Disney Cruise Line guests to the Herdalsetra Mountain Farm, where on the way to a nearby scenic valley they will enjoy a spectacular view of the Geirangerfjord and the Seven Sisters waterfall made famous in Norwegian folklore. Guests tour the enchanting farm brimming with 30 farmhouses and more than 450 sprightly goats scampering around the property. They also sample the farm’s fresh cheeses including Norway’s famous brown cheese – similar to sweet fudge.

Those looking for even more adventure will find it kayaking through the Geirangerfjord. Gliding over dazzling turquoise waters, guests will get an up-close look at stunning waterfalls roaring down into the fjord and the majestic mountains along the water’s edge.

Folk Dancing and Discovery in Molde

Outside of Molde, the “town of roses,” Disney Cruise Line guests arrive for an afternoon at one of the largest folk museums in Norway, the Romsdal Open Air Museum, which encompasses more than 50 buildings. Guests explore the century-old property, including lush gardens, farmhouses, smokehouses and a chapel, and experience a spirited performance of Norwegian folk dancing featuring local children in traditional regional outfits.

“The Land of Fire and Ice”—Reykjavik, Iceland

Only Disney Cruise Line families can get “fired up” during an exhilarating trip to the edge of a local lava field that gives adventurers an up-close look at volcanic craters and lava fields that make up the country of Iceland. Families take part in an art workshop on the edge of the hardened lava field, using real lava to create their very own framed lava art.

Classic “can’t miss” Icelandic landmarks take center stage on the tour of The Golden Circle. On this visit to some of Iceland’s most iconic attractions, guests will explore a national park, a glittering waterfall, popping hot springs and a high-tech geothermal energy exhibition. Over a barbecue lunch in the woods offered exclusively to Disney Cruise Line guests, troll wife Gryla and her helpers tell the legend of troll giant Bergthor of Blafell, whose exceptionally large grave, headstone and ring from his walking stick can be found in a nearby churchyard.

Details on all Disney Cruise Line shore excursions can be found on the Port Adventures section of disneycruise.com.

To learn more about Disney Cruise Line or to book a vacation, guests can visit www.disneycruise.com, call Disney Cruise Line at or contact their travel agent.

Disney Launches Suite of Creative Arts Apps Tied to Disney Imagicademy Learning Brand

Disney Launches Suite of Creative Arts Apps Tied to Disney Imagicademy Learning Brand

Disney Launches Suite of Creative Arts Apps Tied to Disney Imagicademy Learning Brand

The world’s largest publisher of children’s books and apps, Disney Publishing Worldwide, released Mickey’s Magical Arts World, an app that gives children curriculum-based tools to explore creative arts by making and doing. For the first time ever, children can create their own characters and bring them to life in real Disney cartoons alongside Mickey and friends. Children can also experiment with basic music concepts and practice art and design. Grounded in a research-based curriculum, Mickey’s Magical Arts World is available now on the Apple App Store, and is the second of five subjects scheduled for release this year as part of Disney Imagicademy, Disney’s new learning initiative for families with children 3 to 8.

“Following the successful launch of Mickey’s Magical Math World, we are thrilled to introduce the arts to Disney Imagicademy, our flagship learning brand, ” said Jeff Sellinger, senior vice president, Disney Learning. “Families have embraced Disney Imagicademy and the interaction it fosters between kids and parents. We are excited to be launching another cutting-edge product that blends curriculum with technology to make learning a family experience that children can both learn from and enjoy playing with.”

Mickey’s Magical Arts World exposes children to key elements of art and design principles and gives children the ability to personalize their own uniquely Disney-inspired neighborhood with their own characters, drawings, music and architecture. The more the child creates in their neighborhood, the more it comes to life.

Disney Imagicademy was developed in conjunction with academic and education experts to combine a research-driven curriculum with the Disney characters and stories families love. Research has shown that many of the skills critical for 21st century success can be acquired through creative arts curriculum. According to the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities (PCAH), creative arts teach children “how to think outside the box and address challenges with creative solutions.”

“Studies prove that the arts help cultivate not only social skills but cognitive reasoning and critical thinking abilities,” says Amy Kirkland, arts educator and general manager, The Broad Stage Performing Arts Center and one of Disney’s collaborators in developing Disney Imagicademy Mickey’s Magical Arts World. “Disney wants to ensure that arts continue to encourage every child to grow, play and use their imagination beyond their expected capacity, and I think that’s a truly magical thing.”

Disney Imagicademy Mickey’s Magical Arts World provides children with fundamental tools grounded in a wide-ranging creative arts curriculum, and features five experiences in one app:

  • Mickey’s Sketch Artist – Children can follow a Mickey-guided tutorial or draw free-style to create characters and more, as they experiment with color, shape, line, and visual texture.
  • Donald’s Costume Play – While exploring improvisation, storytelling, costume design, dialogue and character development tools, children can get their characters ready to star in Disney cartoons alongside Mickey and friends.
  • Mickey’s Music Maker – Mickey’s marching band will help children create music and experiment with varying tempo and pitch. Featuring 13 different instruments, children can choose the sounds they like best, record their compositions and play back their masterpieces.
  • Pluto’s Crafty Creator – Children are invited to six craft stations where they can explore different art tools, experience how materials work together and create and design unique digital toys.
  • Minnie’s Art-chitect – As they design buildings with various colors and textures, children can practice key design principles including symmetry, balance, proportion, rhythm, and harmony. Children can customize and design buildings to truly personalize their neighborhood.

Mickey’s Magical Arts World will also connect to the Disney Imagicademy Parents app, giving parents the ability to connect and get involved with their child’s creative arts milestones. The Parents app reinforces the belief that parents are an important part of a child’s learning progress and features tools that give them the ability to see their child’s accomplishments digitally and remotely, as well as content to help them extend the activity and learning beyond the screen.

Mickey’s Magical Arts World and Disney Imagicademy Parents are available on iPad and iPhone on the App Store. Disney Imagicademy’s math-based app, Mickey’s Magical Math World, is available for download on iPad, and will be released for iPhone in March 2015.

For more information on Mickey’s Magical Arts World, visit www.DisneyImagicademy.com, and follow Imagicademy on Facebook at www.facebook.com/disneyimagicademy and on Twitter @Imagicademy.

Pinup Girl Clothing Announces: The Magic of Mary Blair Collection by Pinup Couture

Pinup Girl Clothing Announces: The Magic of Mary Blair Collection by Pinup Couture

Pinup Girl Clothing Announces: The Magic of Mary Blair Collection by Pinup Couture

Pinup Girl Clothing is pleased to announce the release of THE MAGIC OF MARY BLAIR Collection by Pinup Couture, a Spring/Summer 2015 line of 1950s and 60s-style dresses and skirts that showcase illustrations from artist Mary Blair. Available exclusively through Pinup Girl Clothing—a Los Angeles, California-based manufacturer, boutique, and online retailer—the collection will include Blair’s original art and illustrations.

Blair—active in the 1930s through 70s, but perhaps best known by her work done for The Walt Disney Studios in the 1940s through 60s—created enchanting, immersive, playful, and inventive illustrations that perfectly encapsulate the mid-century modern aesthetic in cheerful detail. Blair’s whimsical use of bold graphics, juxtaposition of complementary and contrasting colors, and exuberant imaginativeness refused to be ignored in a male-dominated industry, so much that Blair prevailed in showcasing her talents across animated and live action films, advertising, clothing, greeting cards, retail window displays, theatrical sets, and children’s books. Pinup Girl Clothing is honored to partner with Mary Blair’s Family Estate to spotlight Blair’s accomplishments and contributions to the twentieth century with this new collection of New Look-reminiscent frocks.

Founded in 1999, Pinup Girl Clothing produces and showcases vintage-inspired garments, styled after classic 1940s, 50s, and 60s silhouettes, but with a modern woman in mind, coining the term pinup-style clothing. Headed by CEO and co-founder and Head Designer Laura Byrnes, this LA-based, predominately female-run company believes in “Couture for Everybody”, a movement dedicated to providing an array of women’s sizes from extra small to 4X. “We believe that all women deserve the right to look and feel beautiful,” said Byrnes. “Our clothing is made to empower women, allowing them to be the best versions of themselves.”

Pinup Girl Clothing

Pinup Girl Clothing

THE MAGIC OF MARY BLAIR collection will consist of a dozen dresses and eight skirts, with all of these designs available in extra small to 4X. The collection incorporates Blair’s whimsical novelty motifs of travel—such as trains, planes, and caricatures of commuters—and girlish flair like umbrellas, butterflies, kittens, lips, and roses. Some of the art included was previously used in the 1950s for handkerchiefs and scarves manufactured for Carol Stanley Studios, New York. The collection will also showcase one of Blair’s personal artworks depicting a mother embracing her child. These designs will be incorporated as all-over and border prints on classic Pinup Couture designs, including the flirty and famed 1960s-style Jenny Dress which features adjustable straps and a gathered full skirt, the stunning 1950s-style Heidi Dress, which showcases a sweetheart neckline, covered belt, and flattering swing skirt, and the sleek and sexy Evangeline Dress, a fitted, wiggle-style style making its debut in this collection.

“This collection is a dream come true for Pinup Girl Clothing,” muses the company’s Creative Director and Assistant Designer, Micheline Pitt, who employed her own artistic talents in bringing Blair’s designs to life. “I started my career in animation—frequently the only woman in room—and Mary is my idol. She accomplished so much, refused to be overlooked in a male-dominated world, and stands out as inspiration for all graphic designers, illustrators, innovators, and dreamers today.”

“The Mary Blair Family Estate is thrilled to be associated with this exciting project,” said Blair’s nieces, Jeanne Chamberlain and Maggie Richardson. “Fashion played an important role in Mary’s life—her ‘look’ often taking center stage as she entered a room. She would be so proud to know that the magical designs she created so many decades ago have become timeless, multi-generational, and universally loved. And, she would have delighted in working alongside the dynamic and uniquely creative feminine energy that is Pinup Girl Clothing. This new collection not only captures Mary Blair’s art beautifully and boldly, as Mary painted it, but it also captures the whimsical spirit behind the art…that makes us all smile.”

The line will be available online at PinupGirlClothing.com and in the company’s flagship store, Pinup Girl Boutique (3606 Magnolia Blvd., Burbank, CA 91505). The first look at the entire collection of garments will be available on PinupGirlClothing.com in March, with an in-store and online launch of the entire collection by the end of April. The final pieces will be made available on Monday, April 27, 2015 on their online storefront with a launch party at their Burbank Boutique on Saturday, April 25, 2015 before their annual Pinup Parade in the Park event at Disneyland on Sunday, April 26, 2015.

Global prints and textures, including the brand’s iconic ‘poncho print’, help define the aesthetic of the space, which will have more than 175 creatively-inspired shoe styles on display for women, men and kids.

Sanuk is best known for its sandals and sandal/shoe hybrids, which will be prominently highlighted in the store, along with closed-toe shoe styles that are gaining in popularity. The location will feature popular styles, such as the Yoga Sling, Yoga Mat, Beer Cozy Light and Yogi 3, along with heritage styles like the PickPocket, Vagabond, Chiba and Donna, as well as new styles in the Boulevard and Kat collections.

Downtown Disney is currently undergoing the largest expansion in its history, to be renamed and re-imagined as Disney Springs, an exciting new waterfront district for shopping, dining and entertainment. Sanuk is part of the first phase of store openings planned for what eventually will be known as The Landing within Disney Springs.

The store location is at 1600 East Buena Vista Dr. #E, Lake Buena Vista, FL 32830 and the hours of operation will be 10 a.m. – 11 p.m., 365 days a year.
